Dear ReadersI hope that the sun which arrived and warmed up lastSunday will appear this coming weekend asBenidorm celebrates “Carnival” on Saturday 14thFebruary. As it is also Valentine's Day, why not getout and enjoy the carnival parades (there are sepa-rate ones for adults and children) followed by a fan-tastic meal?

Last week was filled with great sporting events andfor me the opening match of the Six Nations was fullof surprises – with an unexpected result as England(the underdogs) came back in the second half tosecure victory over Wales. The weekend becameeven more exciting with two big premiership derbyfixtures on the same day. There was a big upset innorth London when Spurs continued their winningform to beat local rivals Arsenal 2-1. Unfortunatelythe Liverpool event was not so spectacular, and fin-ished 0-0.The coming week has more premiership games, FACup ties for the weekend plus further top class actionfrom the Six Nations.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE...A Weekly Buzz reporter will attend a media briefing onThursday 12th February, and will have the opportunity toask the Ambassador about his visit, as well as the issuesthat affect both British visitors and residents in Spain.Sarah-Jane Morris, Consul for Alicante, will also beattending.

The SATE office that is located in the building “El Torrejo”in the Plaza de Canalejas, at the Old Town end ofBenidorm, close to the beach. The office is manned by

National Police, and was opened last June to providetourists with help and support. Figures released thisweek show that the office assisted 1,280 people, whohad been unfortunately fallen victim to criminals whilstvisiting Benidorm. There has been an ongoing campaign to move the loca-tion of the SATE office by “British Benidorm” – a smallgroup of local business owners located in the Rincon endof Benidorm. They want the office situated closer to themany hotels and main area where most British visitorsstay, and where most of the crimes are committed.

It has been said that a large number of crimes do not getreported, because of the location of the SATE office andalso the National Police Station which is also situated inthe Old Town. “British Benidorm” has been campaigningto the Mayor, Agustin Navarro, about a number of prob-lems that are seriously damaging the British Touristtrade.Smaller crimes here in Spain go without punishment, andtherefore provide little comfort for the victim. Thieves andpickpockets who are apprehended are let off with only awarning if the value of the theft is under 400€. To makematters worse, the threshold used to be 300€ and wasincreased recently.

The number of un-reported crimes is estimated at fivetimes higher than those handled by the SATE office.

Figures released showed that only 7% of reported crimeduring 2014 was from Spanish Nationals, and over 50%from British tourists.

With these statis-tics, the Town Hallshould now bequizzed about theirplans to reducecrime and the com-mon problems thatface the publicevery day. What isbeing done to pro-tect people fromthe illegal activitiesof street crime, beggars andgangs of con-menwho prey on theBritish – which isultimately, hurtingthe tourist marketand posing a dailythreat to Britishresidents?

PRESS BRIEFING AT SATE OFFICE

BEST POUND EURO CONVERSIONRATE IN 7 YEARS £1 = €1.3485

After a slight dip last week the Pound hit a 7 year highand people are hoping to see rates reach 1.35. The mainreason for the rise is because the dollar is trading strong-ly against the Euro and the recent wage growth rises inthe US has strengthened the Dollar even further, whichmeans the Euro is also weaker against the Pound.

The Bank of England is actively trying to control the valueof the Pound, otherwise the Euro Zone will not be able toafford the exports and services from the UK, and theBritish economy could really suffer.

With the forthcoming election in May, these rates are like-ly to continue for a little longer, and taking advantagenow can mean huge benefits in planning for the yearahead – knowing what your money can buy, especiallywhen investing in property.

Talking to Michael, owner of the foreign currency firm“Euro Pound”, he told Weekly Buzz “The last time therates were at a peak was back in 2004. We had peoplequeuing out of the door and along the main aisle of theindoor market. Everyone wanted to get their moneychanged and whatever cash the British people had, theycame in to exchange it for Euros.”Asking Michael what he thought of the current trend, hereplied “we hope it will long continue, and benefit holidaymakers and the thousands of retired ex-pats who gettheir pensions back in the UK”.So what does 2015 have to offer the Brits right now? Wellof course cheaper holidays, and once you haveexchanged your pounds to Euros, visiting Spain or being

a resident becomes even more affordable. In summary, the British are experiencing a significant dif-ference in the cost of living in Spain compared to 7 yearsago, and now is the time to go ahead and exchangemoney.

UNEMPLOYMENT GETSOFF TO WORSE START IN2015 THAN LAST YEAR

21st Jan - 27th Jan

A Europe wide crackdown oncultural property traffickinghas led the Guardia Civil torecover 36 Egyptian artefactsvalued at €300,000 at the Portof Valencia.

In a press conference atMadrid’s National ArchaeologyMuseum, antiquarian CaptainJavier Morales said the mostvaluable piece was the bust ofEgyptian goddess Sekhmet –worth an estimated €100,000.

Late last year Operation‘Hieratica’ reclaimed the haulfrom a shipping container fromAlexandria. Five people werearrested in Spain – fourEgyptians and a Spanish anti-quarian – and two accomplicesin Egypt.

Seized artefacts included fourcanopic jars, several statues ofthe god Osiris, some smallboxes more than three hundredyears old, as well as Sekhmet’sbust. The items – hidden incheap vases – are believed tobe loot from the ancientEgyptian Saqqara burial groundand ruins near Mit Rahina.

Registered unemployment in Spainrose last month, but it was the small-est increase for a January since 2007,the Labour Ministry said. There were77,980 new claims, bringing the totalunemployment figure to 4,525,691.

Over the past 7 years, jobless figuresfor January have risen by an averageof 144,000 people. On a seasonallyadjusted basis, January claims grewby 42,723. The jobless rate inDecember 2014 stood at 23.7%.

However, the economy shed 199,902jobs last month, more than in January2014, bringing Social Security num-bers to 16,575,312. Work was lost in

all sectors, including hospitality, con-struction and manufacturing, but thelabour market typically begins the yearwith a surge in job cuts following theend of the Christmas season.

Only three Spanish regions registereda drop in unemployment:Extremadura, the Canary Islands andthe Balearic Islands. Elsewhere job-less claims rose, especially inAndalusia and the Valencia region.

According to the National StatisticsInstitute, 2014 was the first year of jobcreation since the crisis began, asSpain added 434,000 new positions.

DEMANDS FOR MOREHOSPITAL STAFF

Manuel Llombart, Minister ofHealth, stated last week that theHealth structure in Benidorm is“good enough” However hisstatement has outraged JoseVicente Ferriz, who is Mayor ofOrxeta, a socialist representativeof PSPV, the regional HealthSecretary and a male nurse.

Ferriz said that Llombart’s words“were com-p l e t e l ydetached fromr e a l i t y ” .Hospital staffare constantlyunder pressure,as patientss o m e t i m e shave to endure

wait times in excess of five hoursjust to be seen. All towns in the region need morenursing staff and he also questionedthe adequacy of hospital facilities.Ferriz added that “in 2011, theMarina Baixa Hospital had only 1.3beds per 1,000 inhabitants, far fromthe eight recommended by theWorld Health Organization, andnow there are even less beds”.

PARENTS WORRYABOUT SCHOOL SAFETYParents in CIEP Poble Nou are not happywith the coverage police are providing at aschool in Villjoyosa. The police only supervisetraffic when the children enter and leaveschool at one building.

The other building, with nopolice control, is where thesmaller children study. Inaddition, these childrenhave to walk from theirbuilding to the other build-ing twice a day, and crossthe road (up to threetimes) to go for lunch, andthere are only a few teach-ers taking care of them, toavoid problems on thebusy street.

Residents and parents

have asked the Town Hall to protect their chil-dren. They want to have at least two policeofficers controlling the entrance at thesetimes of the day as well.

THE PP OF ALFAZ DEL PI GOES TO PIECESWITH MARILO ALBIÑANA’S RESIGNATION

Marilo Albiñana, Head of PP in Alfaz delPi, has resigned her position due to“personal issues”. Most people know thatthe PP in Alfaz is already fragmented, buther decision to leave was prompted by avisit from Maite Huerta from Valencia. Theattitude of Mrs. Huerta is provoking con-stant tension and arguments in (and out-side) her own party.

Spokesman of PSOE, Toni Such, said:“Huerta has managed to deeply erode thename of her party in Alfaz del Pi due to herauthoritarian attitude, unwillingness to lis-ten or talk, much less to distribute power”.

The Court in Benidorm has opened preliminary investiga-tions into a kennel, following a complaint lodged by thelocal Partido Popular (PP) of Alfaz del Pi. The kennel wasclosed last November by the Town Hall after receivingseveral reports from Seprona (the unit of the SpanishCivil Guard responsible for nature conservation andmanagement of the hunting and fishing industry) and theCouncil.

The PP accuses several people (including: the owner ofthe Association, Nicole Neumann; and members of thelocal Town Hall) of mis-managing the kennel: its premis-es were almost abandoned; the animals were mistreatedand it had many administrative irregularities.

The Town Hall answered that “everything was legallyexposed in the past, and the government team has not

been accused or indicted. The judge has onlyasked for a few documents to check that every-thing was done correctly”.

Last Friday, The Altea Moors andChristians Association named the2015 Kingdom and Lieutenancyat the ‘Mig Any’ (Half-year) cele-brations. The Christian Queen willbe Maica Botella from ‘Fila ElsCebers’ and the Moors King will beGonzalo Muñoz from ‘Fila Corad’Algar’.The lieutenants will be Amelia Mulet, from ‘Creuatsd’Altea’ (on the Christian side) and Julia Mora from‘Companya Sarrains’ (Moors).About a thousand people attended the ceremony at thePalau Altea. On the Saturday there was a procession in honour of‘Sant Blai’, Altea’s patron saint. Traditional ‘Rollets deSant Blai’ cakes were blessed and in the evening therewas a dance in the ‘Plaza Filarmonica’ square.

NEW POSITIONS FOR THE MOORS AND CHRISTIANS 2015

POT LUCKA resident called the police thinking there were rob-bers in the Partida Montemolar area of Altea. TheLocal Police and the Guardia Civil went to the loca-tion and stopped a French Audi car with two sus-pects inside. The Guardia Civil searched the surround-ing area and found a Mercedes Benz vehicle with a flat

tyre. Onexamining thecar theyfound it tocontain bagsof hashish, with a totalweight of1,200 kilo-grams.The bagswere still wet,so the officers

believed the drug had landed only hours before, probablysomewhere on the coast of Andalucia, but they are stillinvestigating this theory. The two French detainees (and the drugs) were trans-ported to the Guardia Civil in Altea and will be broughtbefore the Benidorm Duty Court soon. Apparently bothhave criminal records. The Guardia Civil is investigatingtheir real identities and if they are wanted by internationalpolice (Interpol).

Carnival is one of the most exciting andpopular events each year. Holiday makerscome back year after year to be a part ofthe fantastic celebrations and parades. Youwill start to notice that it’s Carnival seasonwhen you start to spot school children walk-ing to school in all sorts of odd lookingclothes and props from dads tie to socksthat don’t match, you may even catch aglimpse of some fake or painted on mous-taches. As the week goes on the childrenwill add another obscure item to their outfitseach day it really is wonderful to see andalways brings a smile to your face.Carnival is celebrated across the whole ofSpain each year and always falls on the firstSaturday before Ash Wednesday. Whenyou mention Carnival most people willassume you are talking about the worldfamous festival in Rio de Janeiro in whichtwo million people descend on the city for awhole week and there is a party on thestreets every day, the celebrations dateright back to 1823! Here on the CostaBlanca we don’t have quite so many peoplebut we still have some fantastic paradesthat are popular with tourists and residentsalike! Most towns have two parades one forthe children and one for the adults. One ofthe most popular places to visit isBenidorm, they have two parades, the onefor the children ’normally sets off around11am down Calle Gambo which is thepedestrianized street in the old town, if youcan see Specsavers then you are in theright place and you can follow the celebra-tion into the Town Hall Square. Then the main event is the evening paradewhich starts right at the top of Calle Ruzafa

next to the Crystal Park hotel, the streetsare packed with onlookers, both residentand holiday makers, you will see some fas-cinating costumes they really do not holdback. Be warned they do turn the volume allthe way up so maybe some earplugswouldn’t go amiss, the procession alsoleads everyone down to the Town HallSquare and many people will continue toparty until the early hours and where betterthan Benidorm! So if you are staying nearbybe prepared for the noise and much likeevery fiesta in Spain expect some fireworksto be set off nearby.Carnival doesn’t actually finish untilTuesday 4th March (End of Lent, unfortu-natly theres not a party for 40 days and 40nights), on this day they celebrate quite abizarre but fascinating ritual which is calledthe “Entierro de la sardine” (Burial of theSardine). This symbolises the beginning of Lent andwe all know what that means…giving upsomething we enjoy for 40 days, for thisfinal celebration before Lent in which mosttowns hold another parade in the eveningand finish off with the traditional ritual, where the sardine is ceremoniously buriedor more often cremated.

BenidormBenidorm will be celebrating the Carnivalon Saturday the 14th February 2015 with aseperate children's and adult parade.

10:30 Children's Carnival Parade alongCalle Gambo, Calle Puente and finishing inthe Plaza SSMM los Reyes de España.21:30 Adult Carnival Parade along Calle

ACTIVITIES FOR ExPATS IN BENISSA

Luisa Pastor, president of the ‘Diputacion’ hasagreed to grant Teulada-Moraira Town Hall a sub-sidy of €250,000 in order to achieve an old dream:a 2 kilometre pedestrian access to Moraira. The walkway will be located between Moraira and localurbanizations, between ‘Les Rambles’ and ‘Els Peixos’

roundabouts. In this way, many residents and visitorswill be able to walk safely to Moraira. The Mayor of Teulada-Moraira, Antoni Joan Bertomeu, said that “the works will be carried during 2015, and befinished as soon as possible”.

A 2 KM PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY FOR MORAIRA

DONT HOLD YOUR BREATH!The Chief of the Local Police of Teulada-Moraira, Manolo Navarro, explained thatone of the towns “ex-officers” denouncedhim and the Mayor of Teulada for not pro-viding breathalyzers to Policia Local. However, after investigating the informa-tion and documents, the Prosecutionthrew the case out.

Navarro said: “this former officer’s com-plaint is very peculiar, because he neverdenounced anything while he was serving

as Local Police in Teulada-Moraira and he also knewthe legal basis and thecollaboration with otherSecurity Forces, so it isvery surprising the factof him denouncingnow he has no work-ing relationship withthe Town Hall”.

“Very good authentic Mexican foodand friendly owner”

Reviewed 1 January 2015I did rate this restaurant one star before because it was closedand I thought it was closed for good but I was wrong. The sec-ond time was very pleasant, the food is very good authenticMexican food and the service was very good too. Please disre-gard my last review about this place. Best Mexican foodaround and very reasonable prices, I will be going back verysoon.

“Very Good”Reviewed 8 November 2014The food was excellent, and the service really attentive, although this is not a Fancy Restaurant type. The fact that it was low season made possible that the Chef(Roman Mendoza) could come out and recommend our menuwhich in the end was superb. A couple of starters (quesadillawas great) and a couple of main dishes to share (specialattention to pork tacos) made our dinner delicious. Reasonableprice. It exceeded our expectations. Definitely a place worth togo back to.

“Delicious”Reviewed 2 November 2014So glad we visited this restaurant,it is a little walk from the oldtown but worth it.Menu is small but what made it special isRoman explained every dish then dashed off to cook it him-self.can thoroughly recommend to anyone who likes Mexicanfood..tremendous

“Superb Authentic Mexican Cuisine.”Reviewed 24 October 2014Best Mexican food I have eaten in Europe ! I have travelledMexico and love the food. Roman has got a small menu but itis superb!! try the pork tacos or a burrito with meat rice andbeans so good I asked him to make one for to take away . Ifyou are in Benidorm pay this place a visit you wont regret it !

“So delicious ;)”Reviewed 8 July 2014 If felt like I was having and intimate dinner with our own privetstaff. Victoria was our waiter - absolutely amazing. Great serv-ice, super clean( not like in Benidorm restaurants around) andmost important excellent food. Thank you chef Roman andVictoria and we will be back in august. Can't wait.....

“Small restaurant na the bach.”Reviewed 11 November 2014Small restaurant - not too many tables, and therefor a goodservice. The jamaican ribbs was wonderful /very tasty, and thewine of the house was good. I Wood say -a restaurant Withvery good Food.

“Jamaican ribs - unbelievably good”Reviewed 30 October 2014La Roca is a slightly off beaten path, but well worth seekingout. The service was great. Knowledge of the menu and ingre-dients was top notch and the food was outstanding. We hadsnails & mussels to start and steak and Jamaican ribs for themain course. I'm a rib fan, and can honestly say that these aresome of the best I've eaten this side of the Atlantic.

Looking forward to our next trip to Albir - La Roca will definitelybe on our menu!

David's Fish & Chip DinerCarretera Moraira-Calpe 245

“Just as good”Reviewed 5 February 2015After eating here at lunch time we had to have a siesta as wewere absolutely full to bursting. Our eyes are bigger than our bellies. We decided on the large cod, what a whopper it was, and withchips and muchy peas as well.It was delicious, but last time we went it was, so glad it haskept up the great standards. The family are so nice, and help you with any question youthrow at them.It was cold on the terrace so they put the heater on and it soonwarmed up as they were full inside.Looking forward to going back soon.

“Proper Fish n chips”Reviewed 3 February 2015I use this restaurant a lot and have always enjoyed their food.Do a great home made steak pie and chips. If you want properfish n chips this is the place to go.

“Excellent fish and chips”Reviewed 3 February 2015Another lovely inexpensive great lunch at David's fish andchips. Freshly cooked cod and chips together with my partners5 Euro set lunch all came to just over 13 Euros. Great friendlyservice and a warm welcome. We will be back!

Taking a holiday in Spain during the sum-mer when everything is in full swing, nightlife is bursting with options one cansoak up the sunshine on the beach or bya pool. The bars and restaurants are openevery day and evening, water and themeparks welcome visitors from around the

world and there is a wonderful feeling ofenjoyment in the air. This is indeed one side of life in Spain, butto live here you need to be aware that inmost places it isn't quite as describedabove. For this reason, choosing the rightlocation for you new home is extremely

important and thiswill depend onmany things, including climate, accessibility tolocal amenitiesand transport links.

Most British peoplehead for thecoastal resorts, here you will find avariety of propertytypes, from apart-

ments to gated communities with lovelyvillas. Apartment blocks can be noisy ifnot well sound insulated, and may nothave parking spaces. Perhaps the all-important sea view may not be the answerfor you, but presumably you will be look-ing for a well-constructed and finishedapartment a road or two back from thebeach with perhaps a mountain view andplenty of parking? Urbanisations are pop-ular and some do have on site shops andother amenities, but the majority don't.Will you be happy to drive to the nearestsupermarket on a daily basis? How far isthe doctor's surgery, your bank, the bar? Before you buy your property, considerhow many years you expect to live in it,whether you will be happy to move lateron into a town to be within walking dis-tance of everything, or whether you needthat now. Many people seek peace and

quiet, but that comes with certain incon-veniences which may prove more difficultin future years. If you enjoy water sports, try to find a location close to a diving orwater skiing school all the better if youcan go there by foot. In larger towns andcities, public transport services are good, but often the smaller villages may nothave any, or they may have just one busthat goes once a day in the morning andreturns once a day in the evening. It'simportant to assess this before you buy.

It really boils down to doing the researchin your chosen area, in the streets aroundthe property you like, in the nearest villageor town and in summer and winter. Spainoffers so much variety that there is some-where for everyone, but the trick is findingthe right location for you and your circum-stances. Happy hunting!

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Money matters are starting to improve and if you play your cards right, the finan-cial stability you’ve yearned for could soon be in your grasp. Imagine! As youtake a deeper look into yourself emotionally, you may not like what you see. There’s time to change.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

It may feel as though others are making more progress than you, but if you’d onlystop comparing yourself to others, you’d soon realise their goals and yours areon totally opposite sides of the playing field. Try to boost your confidence. Beyourself and be charming.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Are your ambitions working the way you’d wished? Are plans of action going inthe right direction or have they stalled? It may be time for an assessment ofwhat you want and where you’re going, so deal with issues as they arise to get aclear picture of what can be salvaged.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

You’re so busy looking to the future where plans and schemes are concerned, that you’re missing what’s right in front of your nose. Strand still and smell theroses. You need to get a new perspective on where you’re going and how you’regetting there. It’s not a race.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

You’ll dig your heels in over an issue you feel very strongly about, but others willbecome increasingly frustrated with you, even though they grudgingly admire youfor standing firm. Its time to broaden your horizons. Thought about holidays yet? It’s time to book. Think exotic.

Hypochondria or healthanxiety is a person’sobsessive worrying abouttheir health, often causinggreat distress. It can betriggered by unexplainedmild physical symptoms.

Health anxiety can becaused by stress or theoccurrence of a familydeath or illness.Personality also plays agreat part, as worriers aremore likely to becomeobsessive over theirhealth. Furthermore, healthanxiety may be a symptomof depression or anxietydisorder.

Despite being a psycholog-ical problem, hypochondriaincreases the person’shealth and anxiety, which,in turn, can lead to symp-toms like lower back pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and eczema, intensifyingthe hypochondriac’s belief

that they are in fact suffer-ing from a serious illness. Aconsecutive increase inanxiety may lead to fre-quent panic attacks anddepression, marking thebeginning of a vicious cir-cle.

Ultimately, the hypochon-driac may adopt two verydifferent behaviours: seek-ing constant reassurancefrom family, doctors andfriends, or avoiding healthtopics, such as medicaladverts and doctor’sappointments.

A person suffering fromhealth anxiety should seekhelp and advice from theirfamily doctor. After a con-sultation, your GP willdecide which path is bestfor you: referring you to apsychologist for furthertreatment or prescribingappropriate medication.

In today's society, more than 50% of all mar-riages fail for one reason or another. Just thinking aboutthat makes "commitment" seemscary. It seems that when relation-ships are faced with challenges, people quit trying. Dating is morelike a marathon, trying to date asmany people as possible, instead oftaking time to get to know someoneat a deeper level. For married cou-ples, divorce is not biased. Whethermarried for thirty years or eightmonths, the outcome can be thesame.

The fact is that relationships, whether dating or married, are hard.Things do not always go perfectly, fighting does occur, and it takes a100% commitment from both partiesto make it a success. Often whenpeople break off a relationship, theyfeel as though something is missing. The "spark" hasgone, leaving one or both people feeling inadequate andunfulfilled.

However, even though the odds are not very good, healthy, and long-lasting relationships are definitely pos-sible and proven by many people. Look at Meryl Streepand Don Gummer, Dustin Hoffman and Lisa Gottsegen,

or Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson and Goldie Hawn and KurtRussell. What secrets do they possess? . What secrets do they possess? The answer is that theyall work hard at their relationship. They made a decisionof choosing to love their mate rather than relying on the"warm and fuzzy" feelings, which everyone knows willfade. 5,000 SOLDIERS TOTRAIN NEAR RUSSIA

For the first time in nearly 50 years, the Norwegian military plans to send5,000 soldiers to a major training exer-cise next month in the far northerncounty of Finnmark, which borders onRussia. Researchers think the exer-cise will be viewed as a Norwegianresponse to Russia’s intervention inUkraine.

Newspaper Aftenposten reported that theNorwegian military wants to show that itcan defend Finnmark. The large exerciseplanned for March is called “Joint Viking”and will involve the Norwegian army, navy, air force and civil defense troops(Heimevernet).“If we’re to have a cred-ible defense that candefend the entire coun-try, we also have totrain in the entire coun-try,” army spokesmanVegar Gystad toldAftenposten. “In 2013we were in Hordaland(on Norway’s southwestcoast), last year wewere in Troms, this yearwe’re training inFinnmark and next yearin Trøndelag.”Asked how Russian

authorities may respond to so many sol-diers so close to the border it shares withNorway, Gystad said that “the Russianshave known about this exercise for along time. During other exercises in thenorth, the Russians have held training ontheir side of the border in the north.” Hesaid he wasn’t aware whether that willhappen this time as well.

NATO confirmed this week that it willalso conduct a much larger militaryexercise in Norway in 2018, involving25,000 troops from all the NATO mem-ber countries.

NORWAY ANTI-BEGGINGLAW STOPPED AFTER

GLOBAL FURYNorway's government announced onThursday that it was scrapping plans topenalize begging after the oppositionCentre Party decided not to back the pro-posal following strong international criti-cism of the plans.

The country's right-wing government wasforced to withdraw the proposal to slapfines and jail terms of up to one year onbeggars and those who help them whenthe opposition Centre Party withdrew itssupport, meaning the result of any voteon measures was likely to fall short of amajority in parliament.

'The law would have allowed for theprosecution of anyone found guilty of"complicity" with beggars, including giv-ing them transport, shelter, or supplies. The ruling coalition argued that the pro-posal targeted human traffickers andcriminal gangs, but it provoked a storm ofprotest and accusations that the govern-ment wanted to make charity illegal.

"Punishing people helping beggars is notacceptable," the Centre Party's parlia-mentary leader Marit Arnstad told newsagency NTB. "It cannot be a criminal

offence to give people clothes, food andshelter."

Opponents of the plan said it unfairly tar-geted Roma migrants and some threat-ened a campaign of civil disobedience.

"Norway, a country where we prefer tofight poor people rather than poverty,"one opponent, Øyvind Steinklev, said onTwitter.

Last year Norway introduced the possibil-ity of banning begging locally but so farjust one small southern town, Arendal, has done so.

TRAVEL AROUNDLas Fallas is undoubtedly one of the mostunique and crazy festivals in Spain. Thenagain, Spain is a country known for itsunique and odd fiestas. What started as afeast day for St. Joseph, the patron saintof carpenters, has evolved into a 5-day,multifaceted celebration involving fire.Valencia, a quiet city with a population ofjust over 1 million, swells to an estimatedthree million flame-loving revelers duringLas Fallas celebrations.

Las Fallas literally means "the fires" inValencian. The focus of the fiesta is thecreation and destruction of ninots (“pup-pets” or “dolls”), which are huge card-board, wood, paper-machè and plasterstatues. The ninots are extremely lifelikeand usually depict bawdy, satirical scenesand current events. A popular theme ispoking fun at corrupt politicians andSpanish celebrities. The labor intensiveninots, often costing up to 66, 227€, arecrafted by neighborhood organizationsand take almost the entire year to con-struct. Many ninots are several stories talland need to be moved into their final loca-tion of over 350 key intersections andparks around the city with the aid ofcranes on the day of la plantà (the rising).

The ninots remain in place until March19th, the day known as La Cremá (theburning). Starting in the early evening, young men with axes chop cleverly-hid-den holes in the statues and stuff themwith fireworks. The crowds start to chant, the streetlights are turned off, and all ofthe ninots are set on fire at exactly 12a.m. (midnight). Over the years, the localbomberos (firemen) have devised uniqueways to protect the town's buildings frombeing accidentally set on fire by theninots: such as neatly covering store-fronts with fireproof tarps. Each year, oneof the ninots is spared from destruction bypopular vote. This ninot is called the ninot

indultat (the pardoned puppet) and isexhibited in the local Museum of the Ninotalong with the other favorites from yearspast. The origin of las Fallas is a bit murky, butmost credit the fires as an evolution ofpagan rituals that celebrated the onset ofspring and the planting season. In the six-teenth century, Valencia used streetlightsonly during the longer nights of winter. The street lamps were hung on woodenstructures, called parots, and as the daysbecame longer the now-unneeded parotswere ceremoniously burned on St.Joseph's Day. Even today the fiesta hasretained its satirical and working-classroots, and the well-to-do and faint-of-heartof Valencia often ditch out of town duringLas Fallas.

Besides the burning of the ninots, there isa myriad of other activities during the fies-ta. During the day, you can enjoy anextensive roster of parades, paella con-tests and beauty pageants around the

city. Spontaneous fireworks displaysexplode everywhere during the days lead-ing up to La Crema, but the highlight is thedaily mascletá which occurs in the PlazaAyuntamiento at exactly 2pm. When thestring-lined firecrackers are ignited, thethunderous, rythmitic sounds they makecan be considered music as the soundintensifies in volume. Those firecrackerstimed to fall to the ground literally shakethe floor for next ten minutes, as the mas-cletá is more for auditive enjoyment thanvisual.Falles can be found in the Plaza del Pilarand the Plaza de la Merced, another nearthe Convento Jerusalén, and others onAlmirante Cadarso, Reino de Valencia,Sueca and Cuba streets. To visit the Valenciam Fallas visit

JUKEBOx FOOTBALLPREDICTIONS LEAGUEQPR TO DRAW UP

MANAGER SHORTLISTQPR are drawing up a shortlist forthe vacant manager’s job but nointerviews have taken place yet, according to the British media. HarryRedknapp resigned from the post onFebruary 3 as he requires knee sur-gery, with Chris Ramsey taking overon a caretaker basis. Ramsey’s firstgame in charge was Saturday’s 1-0defeat at home to Southamptonwhich saw the R’s concede in stop-page time.

He will again take charge forTuesday’s trip to Sunderland andadmitted at the pre-match mediaconference he would be interested infilling the position on a permanentbasis.

But former Tottenham boss TimSherwood, a friend of Ramsey’safter they worked together at WhiteHart Lane, remains hot favourite forthe job.

The bookies have unanimouslydecided that Sherwood is the frontrunner for the position, the odds-onfavourite can be backed as short as1/14 across the market, but morewidely 1/3.

Perhaps unsurprisingly current headof football operations at Loftus RoadLes Ferdinand is in the running andsecond in pecking order. That said,Ferdinand remains a relative out-sider at 5/1.

From then on usual suspects follow.Current QPR first-team coach andformer England boss Glenn Hoddleis out at 7/1. Current Derby Countyboss Steve McClaren , who wasvery recently linked to vacant postsat both West Brom and CrystalPalace, is out at 14/1.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is out of workafter losing his job at Championshipside Cardiff offers value if QPR optfor a cheap alternative, theNorwegian can be backed at 16/1.For the optimistic Hoops fans RafaBenitez has been inserted at 20/1,USA boss Jurgen Klinsmann is out at25s followed by Schalke's Roberto DiMatteo at 33/1.

NORTH WAS KOWales wing George North was knockedout during the Six Nations defeat toEngland, WRU medical officials haveconfirmed. The Welsh team's national medical man-ager has admitted that had they seen thesecond-half collision with RichardHibbard – either live or on a televi-sion replay – they would haveremoved him from the match.

North has started his return-to-play protocol after suffer-ing two blows to the headduring the game at theMillennium Stadium.

The wing took an accidental bootto the head from England lockDave Attwood in the first half, and he was temporarilyreplaced by Liam Williams whilehe underwent mandatory concussionassessment. North subsequentlyreturned to the field, but he then clashedheads with team-mate Hibbard duringthe second half in what appeared to be aworse incident, and which attractedattention from rugby union's global gov-erning body World Rugby.North subse-quently returned to the field, but he then

clashed heads with team-mate Hibbardduring the second half in what appearedto be a worse incident, and which attract-ed attention from rugby union's globalgoverning body World Rugby.

"In the second incident, regrettably I wasunsighted at that moment. The otherpitch-side medic on the far side of thepitch was also unsighted.

"All I saw was George North get-ting up off his knees. When Iarrived at the scene, as it were, hewas completely lucid and wasconversing spontaneously with

me. I undertook some on-pitch eval-uations, and that point I deemedhim fit to continue.

"Regrettably, we didn't get achance to see the incident, and

had I been given that opportunity, there isno doubt that he would have beenremoved from the field of play.

“There is no pitch-side replays availablecurrently, and the independent match-day doctor was unable also to aid us inthat process.

Dougie Fife says Scotlandare confident they have theability to defeat Wales atMurrayfield on Sunday.Fife came off the bench onSaturday in Paris and scoreda try as the Scots performedcreditably in the15-8 loss toFrance in their openingmatch of the championship. And the Edinburgh wing saysthe squad are determined toopen their account this week-end against Wales, who were also beat-en in their first match.

“We watched the Wales-England gameon Friday,” said Fife. “It looked very phys-ical and the breakdown was more com-petitive than it has been in the last fewSix Nations, so that will be a big part ofthe match next week. "Wales will be dis-appointed and will be looking for a back-lash, but so will we. We respect everyside in this tournament but we don't fear

any team. We have the ability to beatanyone in this competition.

"It was very disappointing, the way wedidn't get a result on Saturday. We feltwe could have won it and it could havegone either way in the end. "We definitelyhad the belief that we could come toParis and win. We had a great autumnand thought rolling into this Six Nationswe would be starting this campaign off ina good place.

SCHMIDT CALLS FOR IMPROVEMENTIreland head coach Joe Schmidt admits the defendingSix Nations champions must up the ante followingtheir 26-3 triumph over Italy at Rome's StadioOlimpico. The visitors were in command throughout, but weremade to wait until the hour for their first try of thematch.

Referee Pascal Gauzere tired of Italy's infractionsand sin-binned hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini andwithin seconds, Ireland turned a 12-3 lead onpenalties into 17-3 advantage as Conor Murraydotted down.

Ireland were assured victory, but for goodmeasure, space opened for last-minutestarter Tommy O'Donnell to run in a sec-ond try in two minutes.

O'Donnell started only because flanker Sean O'Brien, set to play his first Test in 15 months after two shoul-der reconstructions, injured his hamstring in thewarm-up, although Schmidt is "quietly confident"O'Brien will pass scans in Dublin.

"It was a slog, but I don't know if it was that frustrat-ing,” Ireland full-back Rob Kearney said. “Any timeyou come to Rome that's exactly what you're expect-

ing a slog.

"We knew that if we just kept chipping away andtrying to build some phases that eventually wewould break them down."

Schmidt suggested Ireland's display was"between 30 and 40 per cent off" whatEngland showed in a 21-16 win overWales in Cardiff on Friday.

Andy Murray says Novak Djokovichas no need to explain himself aftertheir controversial Australian Openfinal.Djokovic struggled through to aneighth Grand Slam title inMelbourne last week - at one pointlooking beaten physically but pullingthrough for a four-set victory at theexpense of a furious Murray, whocame close to accusing him of the-atrics on court.

But Murray insists that he does nothold anything against Djokovic forthe way he acted on court.

"Everything has been made out tobe much bigger than what is was,"said the world No 4, who will beback in action in Rotterdam onWednesday. "That happens all thetime these days. In reality, you cango through periods of being very

tired, then get better. You can get asecond wind. "As the finishing linegets closer, you can feel better. IfNovak feels he has something toexplain, I'd be pleased to speak withhim - but I don't feel he really needsto explain anything."

Murray is top seed in Rotterdam, and he opens his campaign againstFrench qualifier Nicolas Mahut onWednesday. Canadian VasekPospisil or Germany’s PhilippKohlschreiber await in the secondround, with Frenchman Gilles Simonseeded to meet him in the quarter-finals. Ron Dennis has no doubts that the reformedMcLaren-Honda partnership will overcomethe “huge” challenge they face in the build-upto the new season and eventually go on towin World Championship again.

Following a problematic two-day test with theJapanese manufacturer’s new power unit inan interim car at the end of last year,McLaren encountered more teething troublewith the all-new MP4-30 at last week’s open-ing winter test in Jerez. Across four days insouthern Spain, the car was on track for just79 laps – over 400 laps fewer than worldchampions Mercedes’ W06, for instance.

However, with Honda returning to F1 with aseason of the sport’s new turbo era havingalready been completed, Dennis says both

parties are aware of the task ahead andready to carry the burden of expectation.

“Honda is a phenomenally committed compa-ny and the challenge we face together as weapproach the 2015 season is just huge,” theMcLaren chairman said.

“Our competitors have had one year’s headstart, which again amplifies the challenge. The rules and regulations have never beenso complex for the power units.

“As we approach this first Grand Prix, theexpectation becomes more intensive. Thepressure from our fans, our drivers, oursponsors, the media gets more and moreintense – but we are ready for the chal-lenge.”

ARSENE WENGER CONFUSED OVER FFPDESPITE DEGREE

Arsenal manager ArseneWenger admits even hehas been left perplexed byFinancial Fair Play regula-tions despite holding adegree in economics.Big-spenders ManchesterCity and Paris St Germainwere both given heavyfines by UEFA last yearafter investing huge sumsof money on players inrecent seasons.

Despite being ordered topay £49m by Europeanfootball’s governing body,City made the biggest out-lay by any English side inthe January TransferWindow, signing £28mWilifred Bony fromSwansea.

Manuel Pellegrini’s sidewere also forced to reducetheir Champions Leaguesquad from 25 players to21, resulting in StefanJovetic becoming unavail-able for European compe-tition.

Wenger has always sup-ported moves to regulatespending in football butthe Frenchman, who stud-ied Politics and Economicsat the University ofStrasbourg, is confused bywhat UEFA have set out."It depends what you call

Financial Fair Play as thatnotion has changed," saidWenger. "Is it just yourincome created by thegates? Is it the gates andcommercial? Is it only thegates and the television? Is it naming rights as well?"It is not clear to peoplewhat Financial Fair Playmeans, the rules are verycomplicated. "We are apopular sport, so you wantto clear and simple rulesfor everybody to under-stand. If I ask 10 people inthe street today (what itmeans) and then if youask me, and I am in thejob, I don't have a clearidea anymore of what itmeans."

Arsenal continue to moveforwards from a solidfinancial base which isbuilt around the revenuegenerated from their60,000-seater EmiratesStadium rather than thedeep pockets of Americanowner Stan Kroenke.

Wengersaid: "TheFinancial FairPlay rules

have to be respected byeverybody and if one clubrespected always theFinancial Fair Play, andyou can underline always,it is Arsenal, then we donot have to talk aboutthat."
