Where To Get Dear ReadersMay Day was the turning point, as far as the arrival of the hot weath-er is concerned, seeing temperatures into the high twenties and insome areas on Sunday it was recorded as high as 34 degrees. Thenational holiday was enjoyed by thousands of sun worhsippers tak-ing advantage of the many fantastic beaches, with a few braving thesea for a splash around. It seems that from one day to the nextSummer arrived, and the difference in night time temperaturesmeant the duvet has been replaced with lightweight summer sheets.

For me the weekend break included a trip to Terra Natura. The Zoohas recently seen many improvements and even some new animalshave arrived. The park is split into areas that reflect where the ani-mals originate from, so there is Asia, Africa, Europe and America. The walk around the park, including time to stop for lunch is around3 hours, although there is so much to do you can stay longer. Youcan combine the zoo with a visit to Aqua Natura next door, so afterseeing the animals, you can relax and cool off in the water park. It'san ideal trip for a day out.

My lazy Sunday saw me up out of bed at 5am to see what wasdeclared as the “Fight of the Century”, or NOT as most would agree.A big let down!!! Nowhere near what fight fans had hoped for, it wastwelve rounds of sparring, an exhibition match that produced mil-lions of dollars in revenue. So apologies for being a little bit hazywith my welcome note this week, but it feels like I had no sleep atall. A Spanish style siesta is definitely on my agenda, but only afterhaving a traditional roast from the famous Monroes Carvery atPredreguer for lunch. To read more on the food experience turn topage 31.

Whilst on the subject of food, I would like to invite our readers to joinus for a Nepalise Dining Experience at the Himalaya TandoriRestaurant in Altea this coming week (11th May) to raise funds forthe Nepal Earthquake Disaster. Check out our Facebook for detailsand we hope to see you there. Also please don't forget to visit ourweb site at www.vistacostablanca.com where you can see all of thelatest VISTA CARD news.

In addition, we have some HOT PRESS ANNOUNCEMENTS thatwill be posted on our social network sites this week and very excitingnews for you to read next week!!

Please don't forget that if you are involved in any organisation orcharity, or if you can tell us about any local events (especially charityfundraising) or if there are any summer BBQ's coming up, please tellus about it! Email [email protected].

Meantime I hope you enjoy this weeks news and enjoy the extrapages, including our weekly edition of “Property Plus”, eight pagesdedicated to buying, selling and renting in the Costa Blanca.

Some stereoscopic pho-tographs have beendonated by the CardonaFar family to the‘Fundacion Cirne’ inJavea. These pictures arefrom the beginning of the20th Century, probablyaround 1915.

The historical value of thepictures is increasedbecause this peculiarstereoscopic technique wasrarely used in the MarinaAlta area. Most examples ofthis style of 3D picture werecreated in studios located inNew York, Berlin andLondon.

These images were takenwhen the area was rural, tourism was somethingweird and the beaches hadno urban scenes such as

the Javea’s ‘Sant Antoni’cape, ‘Prim’ cape and ‘LaGrava’ beach.

Most of the pictures revealthey were taken in excur-sions and leisure moments.Even the people whoappear in them were reallywell dressed as if they knewthey would be immortalized.

This kind of 3D picturebecame fashionable thanksto famous photographerslike J. Laurent or RogerFenton. Most of the imagesare dated from the end ofthe 19th Century until 1910approx. Most of themshowed exotic animals, landscapes etc.

As a curiosity, QueenVictoria was photographedwith this technology.

In the same period it has grown 18times faster than the US, and ana-lysts expect the euro zone as awhole to have mustered growth ofjust 0.4pc in the timeframe. Nowstarting to recover from a protractedslump, Spain looks poised to leadthe euro area out of its stagnation.

While monetary stimulus from theEuropean Central Bank has helpedthe entire euro area, Spain hasalready been well positioned to takeadvantage of the extra firepower.By contrast, economists havedeclared France “lost in stagnation”due to the meagre progress it hasmade in modernising its economysince the crash.Spain however, has managed tobeat expectations. Both private ana-

lysts at the Bank of Spain expectedthe economy to only deliver growthof 0.8pc in the first quarter, 0.1 per-centage points below the actual out-turn.After the strong numbers werereleased, HSBC upped its forecasts

for economic growth this year from2.1pc to 2.7pc, just shy of the gov-ernment's own expectation for a2.9pc expansion.Unlike some of its peers, Spain got

stuck into labour market reforms in2012. These now appear to be pay-ing dividends.Spain's unemployment rate hasdropped like a stone as a result. However, it still remains the secondhighest in the euro area at 23.8pc inthe first quarter. From the start of this year incometaxes were cut, with the highest rateshaved from 52pc to 47pc and thelowest from 27pc to 24pc. The gov-ernment plans to cut these to 45pcand 23pc respectively in 2016, if itremains in power.

This doesn't mean the Spanish eco-nomic landscape is free of any haz-ardous terrain. The country has beenin deflation for 10 months, with pricesfalling by 0.6pc in the year to April.

A THIRD OF SPANIARDSBELIEVE SUN ORBITS EARTHA new study into Spaniards' scientificawareness has revealed they havesome seriousgaps in theirknowledge.

According to anew study a thirdof Spaniardsthink thathumans lived atthe same time asdinosaurs, whilea quarter areunder theimpression thatthe sun orbits the earth.

Although the figures are surprising, theyhave actually improved since the last suchstudy was carried out in 2006.

The survey into the Social Perception ofScience (Encuesta de Percepción Socialde la Ciencia) was carried out by theSpanish Foundation for Science andTechnology (Fundación Española para laCiencia y La Technologia) and was pre-sented on Friday morning by CarmenVela, minister for research, developmentand innovation.

Vela emphasized that the level of scientificunderstanding among Spaniards hasactually risen considerably since the lastsurvey, in 2006. Nine years ago,Spaniards answered, on average, 58 per-

cent of questions correctly, whereas in thelatest study they answered an average of

70 percent.

Despite that,the surveyr e v e a l e dsome seriousgaps inSpaniards’ sci-entific knowl-edge.

Over 11 per-cent of peopledo not believe

that human beings are descended fromanimals, a belief that could stem from thetime the Catholic Church forbid any men-tion of evolution on Spanish television.Back in 1971, under the dictatorship ofFrancisco Franco, a Catholic priest whowas a consultant to Spain’s public broad-caster, forbid any mention of evolution ontelevision.

On a more positive note, 60 percent ofSpaniards now believe that science hasmore benefits than downsides, comparedto 53 percent in 2012.

But some are still a little bit muddled withwhat exactly constitutes science; 27 per-cent of Spaniards described homeopathyas “very or quite scientific” while 12 per-cent said horoscopes are a science.

He's had plenty of unfortunate scenesas hapless Geoff 'The Oracle' Maltby inITV series Benidorm.

But Johnny Vegas is now “feeling so sorryfor himself” in real-life after he fracturedhis foot while ten pin bowling on a nightout with cast members. The 44-year-oldactor's injury is so severe that he's had toborrow character Madge Harvey's (SheilaReid) famous blue mobility scooter.

In a comical tweet, he wrote:“The @BenidormTVshowcast & crew bowling matchstarted as fun but soonturned ugly ;)#BigLebowskiVegas.

“Hence I'm at Benidorm A&Etoday with a suspected bro-ken bone in my foot. Its noaccident I tell ya! #TenPinSabotage”.

If you think that is badenough then there was evenworse to come for Johnny asafter injuring his foot he gotthe runs - known as the

dreaded “Benidorm bowels”in the Spanish resort.

Fortunately, he didn't provideany photographic evidence, but he did feel the need toinform his 213,000 followersof his predicament - and histweets were graphic enoughwithout photos.

He tweeted: “First a fracturedfoot, now Benidorm bowels.Tempted to build a self effigyjust to give myself a hug#FeelingTHATsorryForMeself:( #ManFlu”.

The nature and animal park TerraNatura Benidorm has joined Europeancampaign of awareness 'From Pole toPole', organized by the EuropeanAssociation of Zoos and Aquaria(EAZA). The initiative seeks to warn ofthe risk of disappearance of the twopolar ice caps and raise awareness ofthe need to change the behaviour ofhuman beings to conserve the biodi-versity of these ecosystems.

As part of this campaign, the resort ofBenidorm has installed an exhibition withinformation panels along the park in whichthe public is encouraged to reduce theirenergy consumption. Some of the propos-als in these panels suggest the need tounplug the phone charger when thedevice is already fully charged. On thissubject, they have also given chats toschoolchildren who have visited the resortthese days.

Experts warn that over the last 30 yearsthree quarters of the volume of permanentice in the polar cap has been lost, anecosystem key to the health of this planet. This deterioration has affected the sur-vival of polar bears. So much so that if the

situation does not change is believed thatpolar bears could disappear completelyfrom the Arctic in the next 100 years.

The main zoos and aquariums in Europethrough the EAZA, along with the actionteams Arctic (AAT) and other partnersparks, participate in this awareness cam-paign. Under the initiative, a petition has beenpassed to the world leaders to reduceCO2 emissions below 350 parts per mil-lion (ppm). The action aims to instil small changes in behaviour that mini-mizes power consumption and thus thelevel of carbon emissions that cause cli-mate change is reduced.

HEALTH AGENCY ALERTED ABOUT THECHLORINATION OF THE ‘PALAU’ POOL

By Russell Ash

Benidorm Town Hall will try to approvethe cancellation of the contract withthe company in charge of the gym andpool at the ‘Palau d’Esports L’Illa’,Levantina de Servicios Acuaticos SL,due to the negative reports about thecompany’s management including sev-eral breaches of their agreement.

The Valencian Health Agency advised theSports Department that “the chlorine lev-

els registered daily in the ‘Palau’ pool aretight or below” the law. They added that“the mentioned problem has been hap-pening repeatedly, and those low levels ofchlorine are unacceptable”.

With legislature in its final stages, indica-tions are that the next governing corpora-tion in Benidorm will decide the future ofthe ‘Palau’ facilities management.

Rafa Gasent, candidate for the Benidorm politicalparty ‘Ciudadanos’, left Benidorm (on two wheels) at9:30AM last Sunday en route to Madrid.

Emulating the former Benidorm Mayor, Pedro Zaragoza, who rode to Madrid on a Vespa motorbike to ask Franco’spermission for ladies to wear bikinis on the beaches,Gasent wants to claim Benidorm’s right to be consideredas a tourist town.

Twenty more motorbikes left Elche Park in Benidormtowards El Campello, where they stopped to have break-fast with colleagues from Elche ‘Ciudadanos’. Then hecontinued on his journey.

His next stop was Albacete where he met other party col-leagues befoer continuing towards Madrid, with an aver-age speed of 70 kilometres per hour. He arrived in Madridat about 9PM, almost 12 hours later. After an overnightstay, Gasent delivered the request to the Chamber ofDeputies at midday, and then travelled back to Benidorm.

The request wants article 125 of the Local Finance Lawto be modified in order to declare Benidorm as a touristtown, so that it is entitled to receive an additional €1 mil-lion per year from the Spanish Government.

PROPERTY MARKET CRISIS IN SPAIN IS OVER?According to noless an authoritythan José LuisMalo de Molina, the head of thestudies departmentof the Banco deEspaña, "the

adjustment of the real estate sector is, in principle, com-plete", and the possibility of a genuine recovery is nowreal.

However, analysts are for the moment resisting the temp-tation to jump for joy, wary of falling into the same exces-sive optimism which led to too many homes being builtand sold at excessive prices prior to the end of 2007. Thereasons for their caution are various, and include somewhich suggest that the balance which appears to havebeen reached at last between supply and demand is afragile one.

The first warning sign concerns the pattern of salesregarding new-builds and second-hand properties. Thisis a difficult figure to interpret with 100% certainty as thedefinition of "second-hand" is a flexible one among those

who produce property sales statistics – for some itincludes new builds which were completed over twoyears ago – but even so the numbers which are availableare worrying.

According to Spain's central statistics unit there were2.2% more sales last year than in 2013, but within thattotal second-hand sales rose by 18.4% and transactionsinvolving new-build properties decreased by 16.9%.

The total of 319,389 sales was 58% lower in 2014 thanin 2007, and for the time being it is unthinkable that areturn to pre-crash sales figures could occur. The mainreason for this is that too many people's fingers wereburnt too badly by the market crash when the bubbleburst in 2007, and although credit is now being mademore available, interest rates are low and the Spanisheconomy as a whole is recovering, experts conclude thatnothing more than a "reasonable" increase in activityshould be expected.Last year approximately one in six ofall residential property sales in Spain were to non-Spaniards, and were interest from abroad to dry up thenthe property market would undoubtedly suffer.

As the Spanish real estate sector emerges from seven

years of gloom, there is a general perception that it isnow better equipped to grow reasonably rather thanuncontrollably, especially in the light of greater supervi-sion over the activities of banks and savings banks. Riskassessment procedures during the boom were practicallynon-existent in many cases, and the fact that they arenow being given priority bodes well for regulated, con-stant and steady growth rather than the frenetic expan-sion which was witnessed in the years prior to 2007.

SPAIN SEES STRONGER ECONOMYADDING 2 MILLION JOBS BY 2018

A fast-growing Spanish economy should create at least 2million jobs by 2018 to cut the unemployment rate toabout 15 percent, the government said on Thursday, although fresh data also showed underlying imbalancespersist.

The improving economy is key to Prime Minister MarianoRajoy's bid to win a second term as he fends off newpolitical forces gaining traction ahead of a parliamentaryelection at the end of the year. His government onThursday raised 2015 growth targets to 2.9 percent andsaid the jobless rate, one of the biggest blots on the turn-around and still higher than when Rajoy took office in2011, would fall more steeply than earlier forecast.

More than five million people are out of work in Spain, nearly two thirds of them for more than a year, mainly asa result of the loss of 1.7 million jobs in the constructionsector when a decade-long economic boom endedabruptly in 2008.

"Spain left behind the recession two years ago but I had

always said we had not yet left the crisis," EconomyMinister Luis de Guindos told journalists.

"But what these numbers show is that if this forecastmaterialises, then we can leave behind the longest, deepest and most intense crisis of modern economic his-tory in our country," he said, adding that the new predic-tions were conservative.

While ambitious, the new targets look achievable, atleast for this year and next. Spurred on by rising house-hold spending, output grew by a higher-than-expected0.9 percent in the first three months of the year, theNational Statistics Institute said on Thursday. The new2015 target is a big jump from a previous 2 percent fore-cast and compared to 1.4 percent growth in 2014.Rajoy's centre-right government projected this fasterpace would continue in the next three years.

Spain has emerged from two recessions and a bankingcrisis as one of the better-performing Europeaneconomies, with low oil prices and a weaker euro provid-

ing an additional fillip.

But large economic imbalances have yetto be corrected, storing up potentialproblems further down the line, whileeven now many Spaniards say theyhave yet to experience any recovery.

A large public deficit, seen at 4.2 percentof economic output this year, and anexternal debt worth around 170 percentof GDP -- one of the highest in the world-- are other potential threats to the turn-around.The external debt of a countrymeasures what the government, banks, companies and families owe to the rest

of the world and is a good measure of whether it livesbeyond its means. Spain's current account was in deficitto the tune of 2.03 billion euros in February, the Bank ofSpain said on Thursday.

Also clouding the horizon is the potential for a fragment-ed parliament emerging from the election that could stallthe rhythm of reforms, increase borrowing costs andweigh negatively on consumer and business confidence.

VALENCIA MORTGAGE FIGURES CONTINUE TORISE AS THE PROPERTY MARKET RECOVERSData published this Tuesday by Spain's central statisticsunit show that 21,298 mortgage loans were constitutedon residential property in February, an increase of 29.2%compared to the same month last year, and this positivedevelopment was almost exactly matched in the regionof Valencia, where the total of 2,256 represents anincrease of 29.3%.

The number of mortgages registered in the ComunidadValenciana (comprising the Alicante Province, Valencia

Province and Castellón province)in February was thehighest for two years, although of course it is stillnowhere the figures of 15,000 or more which were com-mon at the height of the speculative boom in 2006 and2007. At that time the average loan capital in theComunidad Valenciana was around 130,000 euros, andnow it is hovering close to 80,000 euros (the Februaryfigure was 80,671 euros).

This is 4% higher than in February 2014, and seems to

indicate that either house prices are rising or the banksnow have greater confidence in the market and are will-ing to finance a higher percentage of the total purchaseprice than during the crisis.

The increased activity in February was noticeable in theprovinces of Alicante and Valencia, where the number ofmortgages was up on last year by 37.7% and 33.9%respectively, but in Castellón the figure of 239 was 7%lower than in February 2014.

1. DON’T PRICEYOURSELF OUTOF THE MARKET. Make sure youresearch the rentalprice of compara-ble properties andalternative accom-modation in thearea

2. DON’T FURNISH FOR YOU Your property is a business, so keepfurnishings simple, avoid clutter andremove personal items. Ensure theproperty meets health and safetyrequirements, and consider whatpractical items guests can expect.

3. DON’T LEAVE BOOKINGS TO CHANCEHaving your own website is great, but the competition can be tough.Using a reputable holiday rentalwebsite, like OwnersDirect.co.uk,can be a cost-effective way to getexposure to millions of travellers andmanage booking enquiries. Greatphotos and truthful descriptions arevital, as is correct spelling, grammarand punctuation. Selling the dreamis important and photos are a greataway of doing this.

can ‘meet andgreet’ yourguests. Havingsomeone todeal with prob-lems immedi-ately, such as acleaner andhandyman, canbe invaluable.

5. DON’T FOR-GET TO COVER YOURSELFFirstly, ensure you are allowed to letyour property on a short-term basisand that you understand applicabletaxation laws, as you must declareincome earned from holiday lets. You also need holiday rental liabilityinsurance and ideally a booking con-tract to confirm details of the reser-vation, deposit/refund/cancellationpolicies and terms and conditions oftenancy.

Monroes Carvery offers the very best homemade tra-ditional British fayre. The Carvery is served everyday, offering roast meats and fresh vegetables withhome made Yorkshire puds, baked fresh and servedstraight from the oven.

The Weekly Buzz team indulged in a perfect Sundayroast outside on their well shaded patio area, which wasvery comfortable.

The carvery section is laid out with a hot counter, whichhas a full choice of fresh vegetables, mash and roastpotatoes, Yorkshire pudding as well as a wonderful thickgravy.

A generous portion ofhand carved meats wassliced and served on myplate. It looked amazing. The beef was rare in thecentre (which is exactly asI like it) and the roast porkwas so tender it fell apart.

I helped myself to the vegetables, roast and mash pota-toes and gravy, but I have to admit I could not actually fin-ish everything. The food was really tasty, but as you helpyourself to the extras, it's extremely easy to overloadyour plate. My excuse is that the serving spoons are verylarge!

And don’t forget, that Monroes also make their owndesserts - chocolate brownies, apple crumble andBanoffee Pie. My favourite (and again my choice), wasApple Crumble with custard, which I enjoyed immensely.

A super menu deal is onoffer, a 3 course Carveryfor 9.95€ with a choice ofstarters, and dessert or a2 course menu for 8.95€.

Monroes is also extremelypopular for theirFishy Fridays, withCod Chips andPeas for only6.75€ including ah o m e m a d edessert. Also Pie Night every Monday from 6pm,costs only 6.75€ including a dessert or 5.25€ forthe main course.

See the menu in online at www.mon-roescarvery.com and don't forget to make areservation to avoid disappointment. You can

enjoy the fantastic roast Carvery every day of the week,6.50€ for 2 courses, or 9.95€ for 3 courses.

La Bodeguita TapapinC/ Kennedy, 14 Local, 1 Benidorm

“Amazing tapas not far off the'Benidorm Strip'”

Reviewed 28 April 2015Visited Benidorm for a few days with friends, spentmost of our time in the Old Town but decided to ventureinto the new town one night and were looking for some-where to eat which didn't serve anything remotelyBritish. This was certainly a great find, best tapas wehad all holiday. Great selection of main meals too.Good service. It was the most expensive meal of ourholiday but well worth it. It's not far from Sinatra'scabaret bar, keep walking inland and it's on your right.

“What a find”Reviewed 25 April 2015The best of Spain hidden away in a backstreet of theEnglish zone. Well worth the effort of finding. Not cheapbut here you will find the best Spanish hams, shellfishfrom Galicia, live lobsters and cray fish and some of thebest meats going.

“A hidden gem in the centre ofBenidorm”

Reviewed 8 November 2014My friend and I visited this restaurant twice in ourweeks stay as the food was excellent. La Bodeguita isa 2 minute walk from the madness of the strip.Tastefully decorated throughout with a stylish restaurantand a separate bar area. The menu is varied there arelots of tapas, paellas and main meals. There is also asection in the centre where it is possible to buy localproducts and wine. The food is delicious and the tapasare very hefty portions! A nodern Spanish restaurantwith excellent service well worth a visit.

"Great!" Reviewed 16 November 2014I am residing in Benidorm and frequent this restaurantquite often with family and friends, for money is excel-lent, service and every dish (my favorites are chaps, scrambled eggs with chopped chorizo, with the days ofseafood and Esla meat) tapas and desserts (cake threechocolates and strawberries to the irresistible pepper)recommended 100%

Surroundings are very pleasant, nice terrace and poolarea, overall - great

“All Excellent”Reviewed 20 April 2015Tried this new restaurant for Sunday lunch. It was excel-lent, especially the fois gras micuit, amazing and sonicely presented. They have new ideas for making thepresentations different. Good food and quality frenchwine and Spanish! The service was first class, veryattentive but discreet. When the weather is suitable it will be lovely to be out-side on their pool terrace. Will be going again very soon.

“Good future ahead”Reviewed 15 April 2015After visiting one of my favourites Iberia, we saw on theirmenu the opening of their new restaurant Aire.Beautiful location, simple decor and excelente food andservice. Le SoleilPlaza La Sort no.3, 03724 Moraira

“Great food and service ”Reviewed 4 May 2015A great surprise. Food was top for the price and fantastic serv-ice. Food exceeded the decor but I am not going to complainabout that. We chose the 3 course menu del dia as did manyothers. The place was full on a Monday night when others wereempty..... says it all.

“An excellent find!!!”Reviewed 1 May 2015Was going to bypass this restaurant as it does not look any-thing special from the outside although the menu looked inter-esting and different. Delicious, tasty, hints of Master Chef inpresentation and type of food served. So pleased we did notcontinue walking. Food was well prepared, presentation wasvery well done, every morsel was delicious and service wasfaultless. Portion size was just right. Should have realised whenwe saw lots of reserved tables, unusual for a Tuesday evening, and the waiter welcoming people back to his restaurant.Definitely go there.

“First class dinner”Reviewed 21 April 2015Visited with the family. We hadn't booked and just wandered in.We opted for fixed 3 course dinner with wine and children dinedfrom kids menu. Fixed menu did not disappoint on all 3 cours-es. Excellent choice, perfectly cooked and imaginatively pre-sented. Service was excellent with staff knowledgable on menu, and attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely return soon.Very good value for money

“Creative menu great service”Reviewed 20 April 201We turn up with no reservation to be welcome with our babyand pram on a table for 2. Menu 25 euros for 3 course andwine. Beautiful a la carte menu, well balanced imaginative foodwith a twist. I had scallops and belly pork! My favourite foods-fantastic!. Hubby had quail (first time) recommended by manag-er and duck! Fabulous starter, main good but very small portionbut satisfying never the less. I was excited for my desert butsold out of my first choice- banana baileys cheesecake :( twopleasent deserts, coffee and brandy for 60ish euros. Very atten-tive service. The Latest BUZZ from the Motoring World

Advanced new diesel engine sipsas little as 4.9L/100km, butremains at least 18 months awayfor AustraliansLand Rover UK has released anew Ingenium diesel engine thatlowers fuel consumption to just4.9L/100km in the new DiscoverySport, but it won't be availablehere until late next year.

Launched earlier this month, theall-new Discovery Sport officiallygoes on sale in Australia thisFriday (May 1) priced from$53,300.

When it does, it will be available inthree equipment grades and withthree engines, including two ver-sions of Land Rover's long-run-ning 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, which consumes6.1L/100km in all five-seat automatic models and emits aminimum of 159g/km of CO2.

However, in the UK and Europe, where it is now availableto order ahead of first customer deliveries in September, the new 2.0-litre Ingenium engine offers mileage of57.7mpg (5.9L/100km) and emits 129g/km in the baseDisco Sport TD4 150ps 4WD five-seat manual.

That makes the UK's cheapest Ingenium diesel-poweredDisco Sport, which with outputs of 112kW and 380Nmdelivers slightly more power but less torque thanAustralia's base 110kW/400Nm TD4, more efficient than

the most frugal version of both Audi's top-selling Q5 (2.0TDI: 6.1L/100km) and BMW's benchmark-setting X3xDrive20d (5.2L/100km).

The UK's base 150ps also comes with low rolling resist-ance tyres on 18-inch wheels, longer final drive gearingand revised engine calibration.

There is also a high-output version of the new Euro 6emissions-compliant all-aluminium oil-burner, with the180ps (134kW) version producing 430Nm at the same1750rpm while returning 53.3mpg (5.3L/100km) andemitting 139g/km of CO2 in seven-seat manual and auto-matic form.

That compares with 6.3L/100km and 166g/kmfor Australia's equivalent Disco Sport SD4with nine-speed auto, which produces morepower but less torque at 140kW/420Nm.

The new diesel will replace the current dieselengine offered in EU6 markets including theUK, where a new 'HSE Black' premium ver-sion of the Discovery Sport has also beenadded.

Also set to power the new Jaguar XE, it is thefirst Ingenium engine to appear from JaguarLand Rover's new state-of-the-art £500mEngine Manufacturing Centre in the WestMidlands, which is set to produce 450,000Ingenium engines each year.

The Ingenium diesel features lightweight con-struction, stiff cylinder blocks, decoupledinjectors, low internal friction, Selective

Catalytic Reduction and a new low-pressure exhaust gasrecirculation system to significantly reduce both CO2 andNOx emissions.

"Land Rover's new family of Ingenium engines is trulyclass leading," said Director of Land Rover Programmes,Australian-born Murray Dietsch.

"By introducing it to the Discovery Sport, we can nowoffer enhanced fuel economy and reduced CO2 emis-sions, while improving overall performance. TheIngenium engine confirms Discovery Sport's position asthe most versatile and capable compact premium SUV inthe world."

DIY CAR WASHINGON IT’S WAY OUT?Mowing the lawn was once arich weekly tradition but withthe high rise of cheap handcar washes it seems there areless of us who wash our owncars.

The job of washing the car byhand has largely died out anew survey claims, with thechore increasingly farmed outto professional teams ofEastern European car wash-ers and car wash machines.

Three quarters of women and a third ofmen have never hand washed their car, asurvey by vehicle leasing firm OSV found. The poll of almost 1,100 adults found 31%of men have never washed their own carand of those who had, only 12% said theydid it regularly.

The survey also brings in to question if thetimes are changing in giving chores tochildren or an extra task to earn somepocket money, as just five per cent of par-ents questioned said they had ever askedtheir children to wash the family car.

The firm suggests that the decline of thisweekly tradition is not just due to theamount of the cheap and cheerful localhand car wash but also the golden age ofwashing cars took place when shops wereclosed on a Sunday and there were nolive football matches to distract families.

We believe saving time and the economicbenefit is the largest factor as trip to thelocal hand car wash can be as cheap as 5pounds/euros and you can be in and outin 5-10 minutes!

In comparison DIY car washing can takebetween 1 & 2 hours on average, depend-ing the size of the vehicle. After that youthen have to consider the expense of yourwashing materials, sponges, brushes, leathers, wax etc. But wait, don’t forgetthe high powered hose, these are notexactly a necessity but they do save a lotof time and elbow grease.

So where do you fall? Do you still wash your car regularly,do you have any tips or ideas to help

bring back the DIY car wash!? Let us know

HEALTH & FAMILY

We are all aware that exercise car-ries many health benefits butresearch published in the AmericanHeart Association journal Stroke, suggests that it can massivelyreduce the the risk of stroke in men.Even better news, is that you do nothave to go out power walking! Just astroll confers benefits. It is theamount of walking that you do thatmakes the difference, not the speedaccording to this study.

Amongst the UK population, around150,000 people each year will have astroke. That is one every 5 minutes.Although strokes mainly affect peo-ple over the age of 65, anybody canhave a stroke including children andeven babies. Stroke causes muchdistress for sufferers and their lovedones and can cause disability ordeath.

There are many measures that wecan take to help avoid stroke such askeeping blood pressure and choles-terol within healthy limits, not smok-ing and not exceeding limits for alco-hol consumption.

Some of us are genetically predis-posed to stroke, unfortunately thereis nothing that we can do about ourgenetic make-up. However, those ofus at increased risk due to family his-

tory should take extra care to controlthe risk factors that are within ourcontrol.

The researchers studied a group of3,435 healthy men between the agesof 60 to 80. Information regardinghow much walking the participantsdid and how fast they walked wasstudied in relation to the incidence ofstroke within the group. The resultsfound that:

- Men who walked for eight to14 hours each week were a third lesslikely to suffer a stroke than thosewho spent three hours or less walk-ing. - Men who walked more than22 hours a week were two thirds lesslikely to suffer a stroke.

A similar study was carried out byHarvard in 2010. This researchlooked at women and found that:

-Women can reduce the risk ofstroke by 30% by walking 2 or morehours a week.-Women can further reduce the riskto 37% by walking briskly (3 milesper hour or more)

So there you have it. Walking isenjoyable, especially in the beautifulsurroundings in which we live. It is afree form of leisure and exercise andmay save you from disability ordeath. There has never been a betterreason to buy some good walkingshoes, rescue a dog and go out andenjoy the fresh air!

NEW CREAM PAINLESSLY REMOVES TATTOOS

Canadian Alec Falkenham a PhDDalhousie University researcher hasdeveloped a way of getting rid of tat-toos without the expensive andpainful process of laser treatment, which heats up the ink particles untilthey fall apart and white blood cellsstep in and eat them.

When you get inked, that’s exactlywhat’s happening – ink is gettingpumped into your skin. Because yourimmune system isn’t too keen on theink, cells called macrophages arecalled in to absorb the stuff and carryit over to the body’s lymph nodes, where it is then disposed. However, pumping enough ink into your skinensures that some of themacrophages get stuck, lumped withthe ink, and that is what makes thetattoo visible.

Falkenham’s cream targets thesecells, causing new macrophages toconsume them and drag them overto the lymph nodes. Targeting thecells for long enough will result in thedye gradually getting eliminated.

The ink makes its way to your liver, and then you pass it naturally.

“We’re not targeting any of the nor-mal skin cells, so you won’t see a lotof inflammation. In fact, based on theprocess that we’re actually using, wedon’t think there will be any inflam-mation at all and it would actually beanti-inflammatory,” Falkenham toldCBC.

“When comparing it to laser-basedtattoo removal, in which you see theburns, the scarring, the blisters, in

this case, we’ve designed a drug thatdoesn’t really have much off-targeteffect.”

Falkenham doesn't yet know howmany applications will be required(the cream is still in the testingphase), but he estimates four centsper square centimetre – around$4.50 or £3 for a 10-centimetre by10-centimetre area.

Could it be that easy? Painlesstattoo removal in a cream

Summer is a fun time ofyear for humans anddogs alike. Many dogs(and people) love toplay outdoors despitethe heat. Some homesdo not have air-condi-tioning, so alternativecooling methods mustbe used. If your dogdoes not wish to stayindoors with the air-conditioner, or if you donot have air-condition-ing, there are still plentyof ways to keep yourdog cool as tempera-tures rise. Remember that dogs cannot cool them-selves by sweating like humans.

They might sweat a small amount through their pads, butthe main way a dog cools off is by panting. Unfortunately, panting is not enough when it is extremely hot and

humid.Summer safety is no joke, and it's up to you tomake sure your dog stays cool and comfortable. Here aresome ways to help your dog cool off in the heat of sum-mer.

Fresh, Cool Water - It is essential that you keep fresh, cool water available to your dog at all times. In hot weath-er, this is even more crucial. Make sure you keep thewater dish in a shady location and change the water fre-quently. To constantly keep fresh water available out-doors, consider installing a watering system that hooksup to a faucet. These systems are designed to providewater as needed and are usually triggered by motion ora specific action.

Shelter from the Sun - Your dog might enjoy a littlesunbathing, but she ultimately needs a cool, shady spotto relax. Prolonged sun exposure not only leads to heatexhaustion, it can also cause sunburn. Yes, dogs can get

sunburned too. While sunscreen is available for dogs, itis not ideal. The best thing is to offer shelter. Shade fromtrees is nice, but not perfect. An actual structure is better.Consider getting an insulated dog house, but make sureit is large and well-ventilated. Alternatively, you might putup an open-air tent or canopy. The addition of a fan willhelp further cool things down. If possible, put the shelterin a shady area to keep it extra-cool. Of course, the mostideal shelter is in your home. If possible, install a doggiedoor to allow indoor access.

Pools for Cooling - If your dog loves water, then alarge tub or kiddie pool (molded plastic, not inflatable)might be a great addition to your yard. You can find tubsor pools at most home stores. Many dogs enjoy playingand lounging in the cool water. Just make sure yousupervise your dog at all times. Also, keep the pool in ashady spot and change the water frequently. Do notleave the pool full when not in use, as it may attract mos-quitos.Instead of a pool, you might also try running asprinkler to see if your dog likes it. however, most dogsprefer a pool to a sprinkler.

Cooling Dog Beds - As mentioned before, your dogneeds a cool, shady place to relax. While a dog bed isnice and soft, it might also be too warm. this is why manypeople notice their dogs prefer to lie on tile or concretefloors when it's hot out. However, a cooling dog bed canoffer the comfort and softness of a typical dog bed withthe coolness your dog craves. Cooling dog beds oftenuse a gel-like material or simply water to keep the bedfeeling cool. These beds are especially great for seniordogs as an alternative for hard floors.

On Saturday 11th may 1985 Men,women and childrenwere at valley parade home of Bradford City to watch thehome team entertain Lincoln City in the last home gameof the old division 3. The week before, Bradford hadsecured becoming champions so there was somewhat ofa party atmosphere at Valley Parade. As it was the firstpiece of league silverware that the club had capturedsince they won the Division Three (North) title 56 yearsearlier, 11,076 supporters were in the ground. It wasnearly double the season's average of 6,610 and includ-ed 3,000 fans in the ground's main stand. What was supposed to be one of Bradford city’s greatestdays at the time turned into the mosthorrific and catastrophic event in theclubs history.

At 3.40 pm 40 minutes into the gamethe first sign of to what was to unfoldappeared when a glowing light wasspotted coming from the back of thestand. It is believed a discarded ciga-rette set light to rubbish that had accu-mulated underneath the main stand.Spectators initially felt their feetbecoming warmer; one of them ran tothe back of the stand for a fire extin-guisher but found none. A police officershouted to a colleague for an extin-guisher. His call was misheard andinstead the fire brigade were radioed. The call was timed at 3:43 pm.However, the fire escalated rapidly and flames becamevisible, and so police started to evacuate the stand. The blaze began to spread ,the roof and wooden standswere soon on fire. It took less than Four Minutes for theentire stand to be engulfed in flames.

On arrival there was little fire fighters could do. Therewere many contributing factors to the fire and the subse-quent attempts by fans to escape the drama unfolding. There were many tales of heroism from fans, police andeven players in attempt to help spectators evacuate thestand. A total of 56 fans (54 from Bradford and 2 fromLincoln City) tragically lost their lives on that fateful daywith another 256 being injured

Horrific images were transmittedat the time of the incident on ter-restrial t.v channels as the dramaunfolded for the world to see.In the aftermath The Bradford dis-aster appeal fund was set up thatwent on to raise 3.5 millionpounds through various appealsand fundraising. Part of the Appeal funds wereraised by The Crowd's recordingof "You'll Never Walk Alone" fromRodgers and Hammerstein'smusical Carousel, which

reached number 1 in the UK Singles chart.

The money raised from this record was contributed tofund the internationally renowned burns unit that wasestablished in partnership between the University ofBradford and Bradford Royal Infirmary. This has alsobeen Bradford City's official charity for well over adecade.

Inquiries followed and inevitably changed criteria for foot-ball stands and stadiums. Fortunately the main stand atvalley parade did not have perimeter fencing, like moststadiums at the time which was installed to prevent pitchinvasions and football hooliganism. This undoubtedlycontributed to the death toll not being into the thousands.

Bradford City Fans and many football fans will never for-get that fateful day in May 1985. As with other footballtragedies in recent times it’s amazing how events suchas these bring football fans together.Fundraising continues to this day for the Burns unit inBradford .This has resulted in 24 research fellows overthe years most of whom are established consultants inthe various parts of the U.K. The benefit of the units workthus spread well beyond the city of Bradford. A group of Bradford supporters have brought out a com-memorative hoodie and t shirt (pictured) to raise fundsthis year to mark the 30th anniversary and at the momenthave raised over £7,000 for the unit.

Bradford city have of course moved on from those tragicevents with redevelopment of the whole ground over thelast thirty years. As with most clubs they have had upsand downs. They had promotion to the premiership in1999 which they stayed for two years. With the ups comethe downs, in which they suffered a series of financial cri-sis that nearly led them to going out of business. Theresult of the financial crisis led to successive relegationsto the bottom tier of the football league. In the 2012-2013season they became the first team from the bottom tier toappear in a major domestic Wembley cup final whichresulted in a 5 nil defeat to premiership Swansea in thecapital one cup, but returned to Wembley a few weekslater to gain promotion to league one via the playoffs. And who can forget the cup heroics of the bantams thisyear in beating Chelsea 4–2 at Stamford bridge afterbeing 2-0 down

Undoubtedly happier times are at Valley Parade mostrecently but the tragic events of Saturday 11th May 1985and the 56 that lost their lives will never be forgotten.Written by Paul Thacker
