My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
I know them and they follow me.
Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz, dice el Señor, Yo las conozco y ellas me siguen.
The author of the letter to the Hebrews likens the daily life of
the Christian steward to a race, a long-distance race perhaps, cer-
tainly not a sprint; requiring endurance and a single-minded focus
on Jesus at the finish line. Good stewards are firmly committed to
live the Christian life to the fullest, to keep their eyes focused on
Jesus. They don’t grow weary or lose heart. They know there is
immense joy waiting for them at the finish line.

Question of the Week
20th Sunday —Luke 12:49-53
Key Passage: Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.
Question for adults: What do you think Jesus meant by “setting the earth on fire” and causing “division”?
Question for children: What is one way you can be closer to Jesus today?
Pregunta de la Semana
20° Domingo —Lucas 12:49-53

We pray too, for those who
struggle with grief or addictions
and those who labor to provide
our well being and freedom especially first responders and military, and for
those separated from their loved ones and family. For each of them, may the
promise and the gift of the peace of Christ fill their hearts and minds, and may
almighty God always provide their every need.

From the Deacon’s desk...
(St. Louis Post-Dispatch) The Ro-man Catholic church is too timid and too silent about the racial inequalities that make African-Americans suffer, Bishop Edward Braxton of the Belle-ville Dio-cese argued in a speech Monday night that was critical of — but hopeful for — the church. On the eve of the second an-niversary of the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Braxton admonished the church overall for failing to engage African-Americans enough as more black men die from police shootings, such as Alton Ster-ling and Philando Castile. “Sadly, I know many African-American Catholics who do not be-lieve that their black lives matter in the Catholic church as much as white lives matter,” he said. The church is frequently not even
welcoming enough to its own African-American members, of which there are few — and it’s not surprising why there are few, said the bishop, himself black.
“This lack of a history of dialogue un-derscores the difficulties that the church faces today when it attempts to evangelize the African-American community,” Braxton told the audience of about 400
at the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury. He said they’re quite happy in their Baptist, Pentecostal, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Islamic houses of wor-ship. “It has been late in the game to change that scenario. Nevertheless, we should not abandon our effort, and part of our effort should be to under-stand the Black Lives Matter move-ment,” he said.

Who is my neighbor?
Belleville bishop says Catholic church needs more connection
to black struggles By Editor, Catholic News, August 10, 2016
(Connection, continued) Braxton urged the audience to take action to heal the country’s racial di-vide in whatever capacity they can, to not remain aloof. To quote Mother Theresa, he said, there’s no excuse for doing nothing. “Everyone can do something,” he said. After his speech, several African-Americans stepped up to the micro-phone to thank the bishop for voicing aloud an issue they say they have long struggled with themselves, but that their own churches have almost never discussed. Retired deacon Leslie Johnson Sr. of St. Alphonsus “Rock” Church nar-rated to the audience how, when he showed up at a Catholic center for deaconate training, the people there directed him to the kitchen instead, because they assumed he was “the help.” “I still feel like an outsider in my own Catholic church because of the color of my skin,” said Johnson. He agreed with Braxton that the church remains too silent on the issue of race. “And the silence is killing us,” he said. Debbie Stovall, 66, of Chester-field, said after Monday’s event that Braxton’s call to action — which was to “listen, learn, think, pray and act” — will be challenging for her, but important. She agreed that communities like hers that are relatively secluded from African-American struggles need to listen to their stories of discrimina-tion, but people tend to “go back to their lives” after they hear them. She also agreed with Braxton that the church frequently dodges the issue of race. “Sometimes, the priests don’t want to have controversy. I think that’s kind of wrong,” she said. “We need to be confronted. We need to be uncomfortable.”
