EVENTIJANUARY 2013
Welcome in Florence!I wish you a pleasant stay in our city. It belongs to us all because it’s a World Heritage Site; make yourselves at home and love it.Firenze, the city of the fleur-de-lis, the cradle of the Renaissance. Let everyday be a Renaissance for Florence. Let’s discover the talent and creativity that made this city so glorious in the past and which still continues to flourish today. We have freed important areas from traffic and handed them back to locals and visitors alike: Piazza Duomo, Piazza Pitti and Via Tornabuoni. With its 15 acres of new pedestrian areas, the city has become an example of urban sustainability and at the same time a beautiful and liveable place. You can cross the historical centre in 15 minutes: walking is good for you and, while looking up, enjoy the surrounding beauty at the same time. The Firenze Card was introduced in 2011, allowing you to visit 50 museums at leisure, avoiding the queues and having to make reservations, as well as unlimited use of the buses. We have provided a new wonderful home to Maggio Musicale Fiorentino by opening the new Opera House. 2012 is the year of Amerigo, a chance not only to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Vespucci but above all ‘to name the future’.We have enlarged the exhibition surface of the Palazzo Vecchio Museum and inaugurated a new exhibition area called ‘Traces of Florence’: we’re giving more space to art and the history of our city through permanent and temporary exhibitions. In January continues F-light, the Light Festival: also this year we welcome all those visiting Florence during the holidays with a warm and luminous embrace and we inaugurate new permanent architectural illuminations in some of the most characteristic areas of the city. We’ve welcomed the new year in the squares of Florence with music for all tastes. 2013 once again will be a year of great events and we are preparing the city as well to host the UCI Road World Championships.I hope you will be able to enjoy all this and that you’ll long to come back to our city. You’ll always be welcome.Feel free to write me an e-mail at [email protected] Matteo Renzi, Mayor of Florence
