WELCOME

One of Jesus’ miracles or signs that appears in all of the gospels is the multiplication of the loaves. The fact that this sign is included in all four Gospels indicates its importance. Of course, each of the four evangelists highlights certain details about this sign. In the version that Matthew provides for us in today’s Gospel reading, the following details catch my eye: It starts by announcing the death of John the Baptist, and Jesus’ taking a boat to a deserted place by himself. In a very human way, Jesus no doubt needed to process the death of his cousin, by being in silence and meditating. What sorts of things do we do when we feel sadness, grief and are mourning? Knowing that he had left, they followed him on foot. We do not know for certain where this event took place, but it seems to have been close to the Lake of Galilee where Jesus did most of his public ministry. When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast crowds, He was moved with 'pity' (sympathy) for them, curing the sick. The gospel makes the reference: 'when it was evening' and when it was evening is when Jesus sat with his disciples and shared with them the Last Supper. For that reason this sign can be understood as a foreshadowing of the Eucharist. I particularly like Jesus' invitation to his apostles to feed the vast crowds themselves. The apostles replied, “five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” This response teaches us that we offer to Jesus what we have, (what we are), however small or seemingly inadequate. The blessing that Jesus does over the loaves and the fish is also interesting. "Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples" (This evokes the words of the Last Supper, doesn’t it?) “who in turn gave them to the crowds.” In offering the bread, first to his disciples, we can see the priestly ministry of the apostles, and his successors, offering the Holy Eucharist to feed God's people. The last thing I want to meditate on is the phrase, “they picked the fragments left over.” This encourages us to take special care with the Eucharist, as we should with all encounters with our Lord. Let us offer to Jesus all that we have, all that we are, knowing that he takes it all, and transforms it into sustenance for ourselves and for our world.

SEEDS PLANTED FOR LIFE DEAR FAITH FORMATION FAMILIES - I trust you are doing well and staying healthy during this extended situation we find ourselves in. Like you, I’m praying this will clear up so we can get back to some sense of “normalcy”. I thought it would be good to send a letter to provide an update. Since we don’t fully know how the situation is going to progress in the weeks and months ahead, we ask you to continue to pray for both wisdom and faith as we navigate these uncharted waters. Your children’s Sacraments are very precious to us, we are waiting for our Bishop’s approval and guidelines to re-open. We’re planning to accommodate your children’s Sacraments as soon as it is safe to do so. While we wait, we would like to continue getting children ready for Reconciliation and First Communion. Please help them to complete their formation doing the following: From the Eucharist “Go and Seek” Eucharist Student booklet. (you received it with the banner materials). A) Read the 10 readings: 1.- We are part of the Church. 2.- Jesus cares for us. 3.- We ask for forgiveness. 4.- We give thanks to God 5.- We learn from the Bible 6.- We are United in Faith 7.- We celebrate the gift of the Eucharist. 8.- We pray as Jesus taught us.

9.- Jesus is present with us. 10.- We are sent forth to share love. B) Please talk to your children about “things to remember.” C) Make sure you have banners ready for when the time comes. As for enrichment, you may do the “chapter activities” and the “Eucharist Treasure Map”. Once we have permission from our Bishop, we will be sending out dates for you to RSVP. Please let me know if you don’t have all the materials you need to conclude with your child’s formation. I want to thank everyone for your patience and prayers during these uncertain times. I’m looking forward to continuing my ministry at Holy Cross Parish and celebrating the Sacraments with your children. In Christ, Claudia Manrique - Faith Formation Ministry
