We have added a question on the Registration form that will allow you to add your name to a “carpool

data base” that will be provided to the parents who have opted in. This will allow you to set up your

own carpools with parents who have registered for camp and may live near you.

The Elementary School will be closed to the public for renovations, all camps will be held at the Middle

School on opposite days. Please see the calendar for specific dates, locations and theme/trips.

Camp costs are listed on the registration form. Registration fees are pro-rated the first week of camp

due to the 4th of July holiday. There is a discount if you register for a full week and for the summer.

Camp Details

Bloom Into Action (Formerly the Elementary School Camp): open to East Haddam residents in grades K-3,

will be held at the Middle School. They will go to the Town Beach on Fridays, and they will need to be

dropped off and picked up at the beach. They will go on field trips every Wednesday. Registration is limited

to 100 participants and will close 2 weeks prior to the start date of each week.

Branch Out (Formerly the Middle School Camp): open to East Haddam Residents in grades 4-8, will be held

at the Middle School. They will go to the Town Beach on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and will need to be

dropped off and picked up at the beach. They will go on Field Trips every Monday. Registration is limited to

100 participants and will close 2 weeks prior to the start of each week.

The Field Trips: Please see the camp calendars for specific trip locations, cost, dates and times. Each field

trip MUST be registered for at least 2 weeks in advance so that the tickets can be purchased and the buses

can be reserved. There are no refunds if you do not attend. We cannot accept late registrations (due to tick-

et purchase restrictions for group sales). If you choose not to attend the field trip, there will be no camp that

day. We have done our absolute best to keep the cost down for each trip and we have not passed any hidden

costs along to you. The cost for each trip includes the bus fee (@ $5.90 per camper) and the ticket or en-

trance fee. We are NOT asking that you cover the costs of the chaperones or staff, East Haddam Parks and

Recreation will pay for the staff. If a lunch or spending money (which is completely voluntary), is needed, it

will be noted on the camp calendar. Please discuss your child’s needs with their counselor if assistance is

needed managing their spending money.

Camp After the Camp (formerly After Care): Parents may register for Camp After the Camp from 3-5 pm on

Mondays through Fridays. There is a minimum of 10 campers per day required to offer this program. In order

to pay the staff, we must adhere to this policy; we will let you know 2 weeks in advance if we have not met

the minimum so you can make other arrangements for your child. Advance registration is now required.

Same day registrations can no longer be accepted due to the staff:camper ration regulations and minimum

camper requirements.

Rise and Shine Camp: New this year! We will be offering early morning care before camp starts. Parents

may register for Rise and Shine Camp from 7-8 am on Mondays through Fridays. There is a minimum of 10

campers per day required to offer this program at each site. In order to pay the staff, we must adhere to this

policy; we will let you know 2 weeks in advance if we have not met the minimum so you can make other ar-

rangements for your child. Advance registration is now required, same day registrations can no longer be ac-

cepted due to the staff to camper ration regulations, and minimum camper requirements.

SPROUTS Camp: Open to East Haddam resident’s ages 3- 5 will be held at the Middle School on Monday

through Friday from 8:00am-12pm; Monday-Friday. Parents should drop off and pick up their child in the

Sprouts Room (TBD), entering the school through the gym hallway. Registration is limited to 20 participants.

Please see the SPROUTS calendar for more specific camp information. Advanced registration is required at

least 2 weeks in advance and late registrations cannot be accepted in order to maintain our staff:camper

ratio.

Online registration: Please go to www.easthaddamrec.com to register for Camps and Field Trips. The

online registration system allows you to register and pay with a credit card. You will be asked to enter your

child’s information into the online system one time. Then, when you return to the system to register for an

additional week of camp, or a new program, you will not have to re-enter the information. You can set up the

online system for one person, or your whole family. If you have participated in an East Haddam Parks and

Recreation program or camp in the past, you can simply log into your account and register for camp, field

trips and after care.

Scholarship Funds: We encourage any family who feels that they cannot afford camp, to contact our office

and discuss the available options. We do not want any child to be left out of camp due to financial hardships.

Your information will be kept strictly confidential. In addition, we have established a new scholarship fund.

We can now accept donations to the fund that will allow underprivileged campers to attend camp at a re-

duced rate. If you can make a donation to the fund, please send a check, with a notation that it be designat-

ed to the scholarship fund.

It’s HOT outside in July and August! NONE of our camps are air conditioned. We always have water availa-

ble (and encourage campers to bring a refillable water bottle). We encourage water play in a sprinkler to cool

off, and we choose our activities based on the heat and the weather.

What should my child wear to camp?

Please dress your children in clothing that is appropriate for the weather that day. Sneakers and socks pro-

vide better foot protection since they will be inside and outside, running, jumping, playing and moving. They

will be able to take their sneakers off to play in the sprinkler, or play water games on very hot days. Children

should always wear sunscreen to camp, please apply it before they get to camp! If they need the sunscreen

reapplied, please send the spray type sunscreen that has your child’s name on it and let the counselors know

that you would like it reapplied. *** WE CANNOT RE-APPLY SUNSCREEN WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION AND A

LABELED BOTTLE.

What should my child bring to camp?

Campers should bring a mid-morning snack, a lunch (and an afternoon snack if they are staying later than

3pm). There are no refrigerators at camp, so please send your child with a brown bag or small cooler. Please

make sure that these are clearly labeled! Please send a reusable water bottle each day. They will have access

to a water cooler to refill their bottles. All allergies, including food allergies, MUST be noted on your registra-

tion forms. Each camper is encouraged to bring a bag or backpack that contains their food, a towel, and

Page 7: WELCOME SUMMMER! Are you ready for some fun? Book of Summer Fun.pdf · Bullet Journaling Class 21 Pottery with Julie Classes 22 CPR, Yoga & Just Show Up Fitness Classes 23 Valor Athletic

7

spray-on sunscreen, if needed. This will help us to keep all of your child’s belongings in one location and will

hopefully prevent numerous trips to the lost and found! THERE IS NO SHARING OF FOOD OR WATER BOTTLES

AT CAMP. Due to food allergies, we cannot allow campers to share snacks or lunches. If your child forgets a

snack, lunch or water bottle, we will call you- this is for the safety of all of the campers.

What should my child leave at home?

Please leave all electronic devices, games, balls, chewing gum and money (unless it has been requested for a

field trip) at home. We cannot be responsible for these items and we always feel awful when something of

importance is lost or broken.

How do I drop my child off at camp? How do I pick my child up from camp?

An adult (listed on the registration form) will need to bring the child in to camp and sign them in with a coun-

selors. There will be a place for you to sign when dropping your child off and picking your child up. If your

child’s name is not on the sign in sheet, you will need to see the Camp Director at the desk. This may mean

that you are missing paperwork, payments, or that the registration was received late and needs approval

from the Director. You will sign your child out of camp the same way, an adult (listed on the registration

form) will need to go into camp and sign the sign out sheet. Please remember that camp ends at 3:00 p.m. if

you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be charged $1 per minute, per child…this adds up!

Why do I need to pre-register?

Registration for all of the day camps, the early arrival, and the late pick up as well as the field trips must be

done in advance. There will be no registrations accepted at camp! We cannot accept same day registrations

due to the camper/staff ratio requirements. This will also ensure that we have enough campers to meet the

10 camper minimum. If we do not meet the minimum, we will notify parents with 2 weeks’ notice so you can

make other arrangements. Field trips require advance purchase of tickets and bus arrangements as well as

proper staffing. This can only be done with advance registration numbers. No refunds will be issued, per our

policy, unless someone from the wait list can take your spot.

Can my child attend summer school and day camp?

We will work with you and the schools to ensure a safe, seamless transition. Please let us know what your

school schedule is in advance so that we can make arrangements for our staff to accept your child into camp

at the correct times/days. Please check the camp calendar for days that camp is held at the school. These are

the days that we can transition from school to camp. We do not provide transportation from school to our

camp site if we are not at school. You are welcome to arrange transportation to our site and sign them into

camp for the remainder of the day. When you arrive to pick up your child, you will need to sign out on the

sheet at the Directors desk. Please remember that pick up is 3:00, unless you are registered for Camp After

The Camp, which ends at 5:00p.m. and a fee of $1 per minute, per child will be charged after 5:10.

How are the campers grouped at camp?

All of the campers will be grouped by similar grades and interests. There will be sufficient staff to accommo-

date the number of campers in each group. The camp numbers change each day, so staff may be moved

around from group to group to ensure the correct camper: staff ratio. We feel that it is important for the

Page 8: WELCOME SUMMMER! Are you ready for some fun? Book of Summer Fun.pdf · Bullet Journaling Class 21 Pottery with Julie Classes 22 CPR, Yoga & Just Show Up Fitness Classes 23 Valor Athletic

8

campers and the counselors to get to know everyone. Campers will be able to choose friends that they would

like to be with and activities that they would like to participate in! Grades will be combined to allow friends to

be together this summer, as appropriate. There will be a rotation schedule, and they will need to choose

different activities throughout the day- every camper will have a chance to participate in all of the activities

that interests them. The daily schedule will be available in early May, but may change throughout the sum-

mer based on camper interest, schedules, rainy days etc.

What activities will my child take part in at camp?

The campers in Bloom into Action will rotate through a daily schedule of activities including art, water

play (swim suits are not needed, but clothes that can get damp to cool off are), sports and games, mu-

sic, letterboxing, scavenger hunts, pottery, jewelry making, disc golf, sports, crafts, and outdoor ad-

ventures. If the temperature is very hot, and playing outside is dangerous, they may be offered a

movie to watch, board games to play and quieter activities as these will help prevent heat related ill-

nesses.

The Branch Out campers will be able to choose from a list of activities and programs above as well as

music and karaoke, locker decorating contests and orienteering.

Sprouts will have a set daily schedule that includes free play, stories, crafts, snack time, dress up,

group games, and time outside on the playground. It is important to understand that these will be

camp related activities. Our main goal in the summer is to make new friends and have fun!

How will you keep my child safe on a field trip?

Each camper will be assigned to a specific counselor for the day. Each counselor is responsible for supervising

their group in all activities. Rather than a group of counselors watching a group of campers, this breaks the

group down and makes the supervision of each child clearly defined. Head counts are done routinely. The

Director will attend all of the field trips and will oversee the campers and the counselors. The Director will

have access to emergency and parent information.

If my child does not attend the field trip, is there camp?

If your child does not pre-register to attend the field trip there will be no camp for the day. Last summer we

offered the option of attending the Field Trip or camp but the response was very low.

How do I know that my child is safe at camp?

We work closely with the police, schools, EMS and Fire Dept. to ensure that our camps are safe. The staff is

trained in First Aid, CPR, AED, children’s disciplinary techniques, stages of development, water safety, play-

ground safety, effective leadership skills development, emergency evacuation plans, lock down drills, and

“lost camper” protocols- to name a few! We keep a close eye on the weather each day and plan activities

that are safe whether we are inside or out. We review these protocols throughout the summer. The Directors

are also trained in Medication and Epi Pen Administration.

Who supervises my child at the beach and in the water?

We require all of the lifeguards to work on “Camp” days. Lifeguards are certified by the American Red Cross

in lifeguarding, First Aid, Professional Rescuer CPR/AED, and some have more advanced training in Water-

Page 9: WELCOME SUMMMER! Are you ready for some fun? Book of Summer Fun.pdf · Bullet Journaling Class 21 Pottery with Julie Classes 22 CPR, Yoga & Just Show Up Fitness Classes 23 Valor Athletic

9

front Supervision and Waterfront Safety Instructor. One group of campers is allowed in the water at a time.

Counselors and lifeguards are required to be in the water with the campers, conducting head counts and en-

suring safe water play, at all times. On the first day that your child attends camp at the beach, they will have

to complete a swim test with the swimming instructor. Each camper will receive a wrist band that indicates

how far out in the water they are allowed to go. They will get a wrist band each week and will be required to

wear it all day. They will not be re-tested throughout the summer because the process is lengthy and limits

the time the rest of the camp can be in the water.

What happens if my child gets hurt at camp?

We will address each injury or illness on an individual basis. Our staff is trained in CPR/AED and First Aid. All injuries and illnesses will be reported by the counselors to the Director. The Director will make an informed decision, based on the report and the severity, on how to proceed. The Director will either:

1.Oversee the counselor in providing basic first aid,

2.Call the parent/guardian if the situation warrants, we have any questions, or feel that you need immediate notification,

3. Call 911 if the Director feels that the situation is an emergency and then immediately notify the parent or guardian.

How are the counselors chosen?

Camp counselors apply each year to work at camp. We interview everyone who applies because we feel

strongly that this is a great learning opportunity for the applicants. We will hire enough staff to meet the

minimum ratio of 1 counselor per 10 campers. Typically, our ratios are closer to 1 counselor per 6 campers.

We will employ high school, college age and adult applicants to work at our camps. When hiring the staff we

take into account their experience, skills, level of maturity, and past employment records. All adults will have

a satisfactory background check.

I need child care before or after camp, can I hire a counselor?

While we recognize that this is important, the counselors are expected to arrive at work ½ hour prior to and

work ½ hour after camp. The campers to attend staff meetings, prepare for camp, and ensure that the camp

is ready for the next day. If it works into a counselors work schedule, we will need a signed waiver of liability

stating that the parent takes full responsibility for the child and the counselor at these times.

How will discipline be handled at camp?

We expect every camper to behave in an appropriate, respectful manner. When we encounter inappropriate

behavior, the counselors will make every effort to correct the behavior and explain the consequences to the

camper. If the behavior persists: the camper will meet with the Director and if further action is needed, we

will notify the parents. In rare cases, campers have been asked to leave camp because their behavior im-

pedes the enjoyment, safety or experience of other campers. If this happens, refunds will not be issued for

the camp that is missed. If your child is reporting that they are having conflicts with another child or staff

member, please report this to the Director or the Recreation Director immediately so that we may address it.

WATER TESTING AT THE TOWN BEACH

Have you ever wondered how safe the water is at local swimming facilities?

The Chatham Health District tests the beach water at the Town Beach on a weekly basis. The tests look for high bacteria levels and contamination that could be harmful to humans.

If the test results come back at elevated levels beyond the acceptable safety range, the beach will be closed until further testing comes back uncontaminated.

In the past, our bacteria levels were elevated from goose droppings. Since then, we have developed ways to prevent the geese from “moving in” and thus, contaminating the water.

The Town Beach has not been closed, due to elevated levels of contaminants, in many years!

We take pride in ensuring that the beach and the water are as clean as we can control.

The weekly test results can be obtained by calling the Recreation Office at (860) 873-5058.

PUBLIC ACCESS TO LOCAL BEACHES I have read some comments on social media recently that ask why “out of towners” are allowed to use the

Town Beach, and why we do not charge a fee to use the beach. According to the Leydon v. Greenwich deci-

sion of 2001, the CT Supreme Court ruled that you cannot prohibit non-residents access to your public wa-

terfronts (or any public park for that matter). As a public park, it is a traditional public forum which under

Federal Constitution, must be open to freedom of expression and of association without regard to resi-

dence. Mr. Leydon argued that his constitutional right for freedom of expression was denied by not allowing

him (a non-resident) access to the beach.

The decision does allow the Town to charge fees but the fee for non-residents must be fair and reasonable

when compared to what is being charged to the residents. ie, you cannot charge residents $5 for the season

and non-residents $500. Most residents argue that they pay for the park through their taxes and should not

be charged anything additional. BUT, the amount of taxes each person pays toward any particular park is

considered to be an intangible. So, you have to establish a resident fee before you can establish the non-

resident fee.

We feel strongly that everyone should be allowed to enjoy our beaches and parks.

If you ever experience a problem or concern at the beach, please call the recreation office to report the prob-lem so that it can be corrected as soon as possible at (860) 873-5058.

In 2015, the beach was used by an

average of 60 people per day.

The lifeguards are available for your safety on a daily basis from 10am– 5pm. Please help them by watching your children in the water and picking up your trash. Both of these will help ensure that everyone has a fun, safe day at the beach!
