Teaching Moment:

What is the meaning of the Chi-Rho symbol ? This is called a Chi-Rho. Chi and Rho are the first two

letters (ΧΡ) of "Christ" in Greek ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christos). Sometimes it is called the Monogram of Christ or

Chrismon or Labarum. While it was used very early by persecuted Christians in the catacombs, when

Constantine I was struggling to become emperor, he used the symbol at the front of his armies and was

victorious. The Chi-Rho is often shown with the Greek letters

Alpha (A) and Omega (lower case ώ or upper case Ω), the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Jesus refers to himself: "I am the Alpha and the

Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." (Revelation

22:13). The Chi-Rho is often on vestments used by the Priest’s, since

they represent Christ(Inpersona Christi) at Holy Mass.

Dear Friends, Our parish enjoyed a lovely Christmas season. Decorations were beautiful, services had plenty of ministers and attendants, collections were good ($ 22,745.14 for Christmas and $ 2,825.72 for New Year), and so many of you thought to send candy, food, cards and gifts to us starving priests. THANK YOU! Now we return to liturgical “Ordinary Time.” Ordinary time is full of weddings, infant baptisms, and various other blessings. We go to meetings. We hear appeals from missionaries. And we conduct our Diocesan Development Fund drive (Jan. 24-25). The Diocesan Development fund helps Bishop Barnes and our diocese with items so expensive they are beyond what individual parishes could ever accomplish:

Formation and education of seminarians Ongoing care for priests (education for active ones; medical and spiritual care for sick and retired ones) (helping Jesus’ poor) Social concerns Catholic education Land for future churches and parishes

I told you last year that I think enough of Bishop Barnes and his work here to give $1000 of my own money to this collection. And I’m asking all active Catholic families of normal income to consider a pledge (paid little by little the following months) of at least $500. A great incentive: anything our parish raises above our $73,400 assessment is returned here for our local projects (esp. repairing our ailing facilities!). I hope you will pray for the success of this drive. And … welcome to ordinary time! Peace, All Good! Fr. Mike

Paz, Todo Bueno! Padre Mike

St. Margaret Mary Women’s Fellowship invites you to join us this New Year in a 10-week study called

Proverbs – Learning to Live Wisely.

The Book of Proverbs teaches us how to be successful and

prosperous in our work, our dealings with family and friends, and our relationship with God. The direction and

guidance they give us is practical, concrete, reasonable and fruitful. We welcome women 18 years and older to make plans once a week to come, study and seek guidance from

the Scriptures and other Catholic Christian women and strengthen your

personal relationship with Christ.

Register now so together we may grow in wisdom! Our study begins Thursday, January 15th at 6:30 p.m. in our parish hall. There will be registration after all Masses the

weekend of January 3rd and 4th. You need not be Catholic or a member of SMM Parish to join. The registration fee is $15.00 due the first night. This includes your book and

other materials you will receive during the study. Feel free to invite friends, neighbors, or family to participate with

you! This is a great opportunity to meet new ladies and en-joy the fellowship of other Christian women.

If you have any questions or need more information please

feel free to contact Martha Ward @ (909) 598-8220

Rachel’s Vineyard Post Abortion Healing

Weekend Retreat

March 20th – March 22nd 2015

www.rachelsvineyard.org Email:[email protected]

(951) 325-7702

Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreats are a beautiful opportunity for any woman or man who has struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of an abortion. During the weekend, we gather as the suffering Body of Christ and minister to each other in His name. We share spiritual exercises, which help work through repressed grief and anger and many rituals to help you grieve the loss of your unborn child and accept God’s forgiveness. This retreat is presented in the Catholic tradition.

“I was terrified to take the first step forward and par-ticipate in Rachel’s Vineyard. It seemed safer to re-main hiding in the darkness, keeping the pain locked up deep inside rather than to risk exposing my shame to another soul. Now I am grateful to have experienced God’s healing and forgiveness with other women in an atmosphere of complete acceptance and trust. Ra-chel’s Vineyard has been a blessing to me.” The retreat and registration -are strictly private. All inquiries will be answered confidentially.

For registration, cost, location and more informa-tion: Please call Dolores at (951) 325-7702 or email [email protected]. (Early registration sug-gested. Enrollment is limited.) These are private lines. You may leave a confidential message and know that return phone calls are made with discre-tion.

Pastoral Care Certificate Program

The Department of Life,

Dignity & Justice is working in partnership with Loyola

Marymount University as the University offers their

Pastoral Care Certificate Program in our Diocese.

What is Pastoral Care?

Pastoral Care is a means of providing comfort to those suffering as a

result of life’s challenges, including long-term or life

-limiting illness, death of a loved one, separation and divorce, or aging. The Pastoral Care

professional certificate program provides practical suggestions and models both for the direct service

of those suffering as they face their personal challenges, and for the development of parish

programs. Participants will study the theological and spiritual foundations for the call to pastoral care ministry, and learn how to help others use their talents as part of a caring Christian community.
