Mission: We the people of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, seek to be an example of the presence of God through our Christian Catholic worship, education, service and stewardship of all God’s gifts. We celebrate our diversity of age, culture, language, and view points as a sign of God’s all powerful and ever-present love in our community of faith. We strive to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ to evangelize and to respond in love, as well as compassion to our community in Honolulu, to be a welcoming place to all who seek the grace, fellowship, and love of God. Welcome To Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus June 9, 2019 Pentecost Sunday Deacon Raffy Mendoza ACTS 2:1-11 / 1 COR 12:3B-7, 12-13 / JN 20:19-23 Today, the Easter season concludes with Pentecost Sunday, commemorating that day in the budding Church when the Father and the Son poured out the Holy Spirit in a special way on the Apostles. Then, they took up the mission of proclaiming the Gospel throughout the whole world. The Holy Spirit, throughout the Church’s history, has showered down gifts upon her to keep her faithful to the teaching she’s received from Our Lord, and to keep the fires burning to inspire hearts to turn to Our Lord and be reconciled with God and with one another. In today’s First Reading, the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the Twelve in a way that cannot be contained – noise like a strong driving wind, and tongues as of fire. It’s a sign no one can ignore; a sign everyone can understand. The fire of the Holy Spirit spreads like wildfire - uncontainable. In today’s Second Reading, Paul reminds us that the presence and action of the Holy Spirit are often perceived as gifts, gifts for the edification and unity of the Church. The spiritual gifts are unified in the Church through their source: the Holy Spirit. The ways we serve are unified in serving Our Lord. All the workings of the Holy Spirit in us come from God. As faithful stewards, we are invited to use each gift for the building up of the Body of Christ and the Kingdom of God. In today’s Gospel, we are reminded of one of the Spirit’s greatest gifts, a gift Our Lord conferred to the Apostles on the eve of his Resurrection: the gift of reconciliation with God. Our Lord first bestows the gift of reconciliation with his dearest friends, the friends who abandoned him in his moment of need: “Peace be with you.” It’s no coincidence that he repeats this desire for reconciliation even as he is breathing the Holy Spirit upon them. It is the Holy Spirit who makes reconciliation possible. The Spirit raised Jesus from the dead and gave him new life so that reconciliation would be possible. One of the most saddening ways to break off a relationship with someone is to say, “You are dead to me!!” In God’s eyes, even in those situations, the Spirit can make that person come alive again through the grace of mercy, whether mercy received or mercy given. Pentecost (“the fiftieth day”) is a Christian holiday commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the fiftieth day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Apostles began to speak in many languages and have received other spiritual gifts. The event was foretold by Jesus before his Ascension.

In Christian tradition Pentecost is a moveable feast observed exactly seven weeks after Easter Day, i.e. 50 days after Easter (inclusive, 49 + Easter). It always falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter Day. In Eastern churches the date of Pentecost is calculated in the same manner but it usually differs due to the use of the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian. Pentecost is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church.

Leo’s sermonsScholars believe that Pope Leo I’s Sermons 75–77 were given on Pentecost Sunday. In these sermons, dating to the 5th century, Leo discusses Macedonianism, which the Catholic Church denounced as heresy because it considered the Holy Spirit inferior to the Father and Son, thereby undermining the Trinity. He also denounces Manichean doctrine on the Holy Spirit, which taught that the Holy Spirit was present in Mani. Leo discusses other Catholic doctrine pertaining to the Holy Spirit, especially emphasizing the Spirit’s relationship to the Father and Son of the Trinity and the Catholic Church. He draws an analogy between Jewish practices and the Christian feast day: “As once to the Hebrew people, freed from Egypt, the law was given on Mt. Sinai on the fiftieth day after the sacrifice of the lamb, so after the Passion of the Christ when the true Lamb of God was killed, on the fiftieth day from his Resurrection, the Holy Spirit came down on the apostles and the community of believers.”[37] Leo calls this the Second Covenant and says that it is “established by the same Spirit who has set up the first”. He describes the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples on Pentecost as the fulfillment of a “long-awaited promise”.

Bishop Larry Silva has appointed Fr. Gregorio Honorio, Jr. as the Diocesan Vicar for Clergy effective July 1, 2019.

Fr. Greg was ordained on Feb 10, 1995 in the Philippines. In 2000, he served in the Diocese of Ilagan, Philippines. He then served in the Diocese of Armidale-New South Wales, Australia and the Diocese of San Bernardino, California before coming to Hawaii. His first assignment was at St. Joseph Parish in Waipahu. He served as its pastor from 2008 to 2012. In 2013, Fr. Greg was appointed as Administrator of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Honolulu and eventually installed as pastor of

Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa on March 17, 2016. During these years, he has actively promoted and encouraged all of us to a life of Stewardship. His own life reflects God’s call to serve, not to be served. Let’s continue to pray for Fr. Greg as he embarks on his new role in the Diocese of Honolulu.

Fr. Greg will preside in all our Sunday (Saturday vigil) Masses on the weekend of June 29/30, 2019, which will mark his last official day in our parish. To celebrate his years of faithful service and leadership to our church and school, we will have a Thanksgiving dinner and program on June 28, 2019 (Friday) at 6:00PM, in the parish hall. Everyone is invited.

The Bishop has appointed Fr. Manuel (Manny) Hewe as the Pastor of Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, effective July 1, 2019.

Fr. Manny was ordained as a priest in 1997 (in the Philippines) and is the outgoing Diocesan Vicar for Clergy. He served as pastor at St. John Apostle and Evangelist Catholic Church from July 2007 to June 2011.

Fr. Manny will be formally installed as our pastor on July 7, 2019 (Sunday) at the 10:30AM Mass, to be presided by Bishop Larry Silva.

A lunch fellowship will follow after the Mass in the Parish Hall. We invite all ministry members as well as our parish family to welcome him on this day.

Next weekend, June 15 & 16, is our Hunger Awareness Sunday. It is the time of the month when we are reminded to keep in mind that we have brothers and sisters in our midst who suffer from food insecurity that is not knowing where their next meal will come from. Many of our households live paycheck to paycheck coming up short by $320 each month. Most parents have second and third jobs. Our kupuna and the disabled, those on fixed income are finding it ever more difficult to make ends meet. Through your generosity we are able to help those who cannot get out to shop and are using their income to pay rent or medical bills.

Our Social Ministry collects approximately 500 pounds of non-perishable food items from your generous donations. Our Parish volunteers package about 30 - 35 bags of groceries each month from your generous contributions. For the past months, we have distributed around 35 – 40 bags of groceries to our brothers and sisters (majority of them are elderly) who are in need.

We are appealing to you to please bring non-perishable food items when you come to mass next weekend. We had been experiencing an influx of those who are needing food every month. Our list is growing so we need more foods to distribute.

You may also please consider giving financially to the Social Ministry so we can fund our services to those who are in need in our community. Please use the green envelopes on the pews inside the church.

We thank you for your generosity and continued support. Let us continue to be good stewards of God’s blessings.

Come, join us as we minister by serving hot meals at the Institute of Human Services for the Men’s and Women/Children’s Shelters. If you’re interested in joining our outreach ministry to serve food for the homeless in the shelters, we need help on Wednesday, June 12, Women & Children’s Shelter at 5:00 p.m. and Men’s Shelter at 5:45 p.m. No experience is necessary, just a pleasant smile and a willing heart. Please call the Social Ministry Office at 745-0561 or Julie at 351-6212 to sign-up or for more information.

PENTECOST SUNDAYIn today’s first reading we encounter the Holy Spirit whoat Pentecost came rushing in over Jesus’ followers like a powerful wind. It must have been a frightening experience for them. But their great acts of prophetic witness beganwhen the Spirit drew them out of their “comfort zones.” Jesus said the Holy Spirit, like the wind, blows where it wills; into the lives of good stewards, empowering them to perform wondrous acts of healing, reconciliation andevangelization; encouraging them to proclaim the GospelJu
