ST. THERESA FEAST CHAIRPERSON WANTED We are looking for someone to lead our Annual Parish Feast. If you can help or would like more information (such as a Job Description) please speak directly to Father She-mek.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: Genesis 2:7-9, 3:1-7 This passage from Genesis narrates the creation of man, the temptation by the serpent, and the fall of Adam and Eve. Second Reading: Romans 5:12-19 Paul tells the Romans that Adam’s disobedience brought sin and death to the world, but Christ’s dying on the cross for us will bring us salvation and life. Gospel: Matthew 4:1-11 In preparation for His ministry, Jesus goes into the desert to fast and pray for 40 days. There He is tempted by the devil to give evidence of His miraculous powers, but Je-sus resists the devil saying, “Away with you Satan! You shall do homage to the Lord your God; Him alone shall you adore.”

ELECTRONIC GIVING What do I have to do to set this up? Many of you al-ready pay your bills electronically – this is no different. Contact you banking institution to set this up. The bank will send your parish a check for the amount you have indicated on the day you have selected. Some people do this weekly, others monthly. But I won’t have anything to put in the collection basket. Starting with the next budget envelope packet, there will be a box to check off on each envelope that reads “I gave electronically”. You can use this to place in the collection if you choose. What benefit is there to electronic giving? Giving electronically on a set schedule not only makes is easier for you it also assists the parishes when planning budg-ets. The budget packet will also be a budget aid to you, letting you know in advance when there is a special sec-ond collection for the parish or a Diocesan or National collection.

LENTEN OBSERVANCES Abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday and the

Fridays of Lent (for those 14 and over) is required by Church Law. Also, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting: those between 18 and 59 should eat less, meaning, take no solid food between meals and only one full meal that day. Serious health conditions excuse a person from these precepts.

Mother of Hope Camp: a Catholic Charity Fund Agency, is Hiring for Summer 2017. Positions include: Maintenance/Groundskeeper (21+-years-of-age with general grounds keeping, carpentry, and mechanical skills, 20 hours/week, April - October), as well as Group Counselors, Art Counselor, & Lifeguards for summer employment. Visit WWW.MOTHEROFHOPECAMP.COM to learn more and download the application or call the MOH Office at 401-568-3580.

LENTEN ACTIVITIES MORE EVENTS

2016 CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS St. Theresa and St. Christopher’s contribution statements are ready. If you would like your statement, please call St. Theresa rectory at 401-624-8746 or St Christopher’s Rec-tory at 401-624-6644 and leave your name, address and phone number. We will run the statements once a week and mail them to you.

PARISH CENSUS ST. THERESA PARISH

Now that we have completed the Updating of St. Chris-topher Parish Census, we will continue with PHASE III of St. Theresa Census Update. Phase I began in August of 2015 with the distribution of census forms after all Masses. If you did not respond, Phase II consisted of a mailing in early 2016. We have spent the last year updating all census information for those families who responded, only about 1/3 of the parish. We have begun Phase III, with a second mailing to all fami-lies who have not responded to date.

As you can imagine, this has been a long and expen-sive process so we ask everyone’s cooperation. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT EACH FAMILY RESPOND. Do not assume that “they know who I am” or “I’m there most Sundays”.

If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you have moved or no longer consider yourself to be members of St. Theresa Parish. We will remove you from the parish census and further mailings. However, we will always keep your parish and sacramental records and they will always be available to you.

OUTREACH MINISTRY In just 3 yrs., the Outreach Ministry at St. Theresa and St. Christopher Parishes has grown to 8 members, who when called upon, will visit with a family in their home to assess their needs. The usual requests are for emergency assistance for such things as heat and utilities, rent, food and medical supplies. Thanks to you we can minister to our own parishioners and the Tiverton community. Our annual collection on Ash Wednesday is for the support of the Outreach Ministry. Additional support to this ministry comes from your gift card donations (for grocery stores and pharmacy) from the Giv-ing Tree. Each Christmas, parishioners who are home bound or in nursing homes receive a visit and a poinsettia. On each holiday, the St. Christopher Women’s Guild sends a card to all the homebound. Both parishes have baskets for non-perishable items that are brought to the East Bay Community Center each month. When we combine our strengths, we can do great things. Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving: Lent is above all a time of prayer. To enhance the practice of prayer, the Church in-vites her members to follow the custom of fasting and to accompany that fasting with an increase of almsgiving for the needs of the poor.

40 Days for Life Fall Campaign: The Office of Life and Family Ministry and R.I. Right to Life will be co-sponsoring the Lenten campaign beginning Wednesday, March 1 through Palm Sunday, April 9. We are requesting parishes to adopt a day or for individuals to adopt an hour for prayer at Planned Parenthood, 111 Point Street, Provi-dence or the Women’s Medical Clinic, 1725 Broad Street, Cranston during this 40 day period. If you are interested in learning more about the campaign that calls for prayer, fasting and community outreach and the Diocesan preg-nancy outreach and post-abortion ministries, contact: Carol Owens, Office of Life and Family Ministry at 421-7833 x 218.
