Welcome to our Parish/Bienvenido a Nuestra Parroquia Saint Benedict the Moor Rectory and Parish 1625 E. 12th St. Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101 Phone: 336-725-9200 Fax: 336-397-0898 November 4, 2018 Today’s Readings Deuteronomy 6:2-6 Psalm 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51 Hebrews 7:23-28 Mark 12:28b-34 Pastor, Fr. Henry A. Tutuwan (980)616-6676 [email protected] Lectura, as de Hoy Deuteronomio 6:2-6 Salmo 17:2-3a, 3bc-4, 47 y 51ab Hebreos 7:23-28 Marcos 12:28-34 The Gospel starts out with this, "One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him "Which is the first of all the commandments?" In the Gospels we oftentimes hear about the way Jesus challenges the Pharisees, Sad- ducees and the Scribes. We also hear when a member of these groups comes to Jesus with a question it is ex- plained “He asked this to test Him.” The encounter we hear recounted today does not follow that exact pattern, but at the end of the Gospel it is said, “And no one dared to ask him any more questions.” Perhaps the Scribe in today’s story was trying to test Jesus. Jesus responds by quoting the Shema -- the great Jewish prayer that recounts God’s words spoken through Mo- ses. When the Scribe hears Jesus’ response he whole- heartedly agrees with Him. Regardless of his original motivation in approaching Jesus, when Jesus respond- ed he listened with an open heart and embraced the an- swer. In a simple way this becomes a model for us – we must have courage to approach Jesus and listen with an open heart to His response. The path to disci- pleship starts with us having a desire to draw close to Jesus. As many of you may know we have had the computer lab available and has not been used. Lack of usage has caused the internet provider (Winston Net ) to provide service until the end of De-cember 2018. Lets try to take advantage of these last few weeks. Please contact Mr Mckoy or Mr. Baham.

Our Christian duty during November.

During the month of November the Church meditates and celebrates the Communion of Saints, which is the charitable link with the faithful who have already reached heaven (Church Triumphant), and prays for the faithful departed who are undergoing purification of their sins in Purgato-ry (Church Suffering) and of the pilgrim faithful here on earth (Church Militant). "In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1475). On November 1st the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation, honoring all those faithful in heaven. Through-out November the Church also remembers our Faithful Departed. The need and duty of prayer for the departed souls has been acknowledged by the Church at all times. It is recommended in the Scriptures of the Old Testament: "It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins."(2 Macch. 12, 46). This duty has found expression not only in public and private prayers but especially in the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the repose of souls. We are encouraged to pray faithfully daily for our deceased loved ones and for the souls in purgatory and gain indulgence.
