In St. Paul’s years, divorce was not practical for the poorer classes, but readily available for the more affluent. Of course, there were plenty of marriages that existed in name only, as is the sad case today. But Paul had a different vision for the new Christian community, one based not on short-term erotic love (Greek: eros), but on Christ-like unconditional love (Greek: agape). Paul knew that the only way to make a marriage work according to God’s intentions is by the principle of mutual submission to one another in Christ (vv. 21-24). If the church has failed to maintain the sanctity and integrity of life-long marriages, it is because individual members have failed to apply and live by the code of mutual respect and submission. No greater example can Paul give of what a marriage ought to be, but that of the agape relationship that exists between Christ and the church (vv. 25-33). By bring- ing this example to the fore, Paul automatically dispels any warped paradigms of each partner’s role in the marriage. No tyrannical husband can ever make the claim of living a Christian marriage. Nor can a back-talking, nagging wife can ever claim the same. Christ loved us, the church, to the point of giving his life for us. And the church has accepted the responsibility of submitting freely to our Lord in gracious response to his loving act. There is a great mystery here! The mystery is that in a profound way that surpasses all understanding, like Christ and the church are united spiritually as head and body, so too husband and wife are united as one integrated soul and body. This is why divorce hurts so much, because it tears into the very fabric of what were once two integrated beings. God did not intend for marriages to break up (Matthew 19:1-9). Sin in many forms is ultimately what is responsible for marriage disasters. Couples that refuse to submit to one another in the Lord display their egos, pride and carnality in their defensiveness, false superiority, immaturity, verbal abuse, and even violence to beat one another into submission! PAUL’S UNDERSTANDING OF CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE

Our second reading today is from St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, and it

discusses about Paul’s understanding on Christian marriage. In St. Paul’s years,

divorce was not practical for the poorer classes, but readily available for the more

affluent. Of course, there were plenty of marriages that existed in name only, as is

the sad case today. But Paul had a different vision for the new Christian

community, one based not on short-term erotic love (Greek: eros), but on

Christ-like unconditional love (Greek: agape). Paul knew that the only way to

make a marriage work according to God’s intentions is by the principle of mutual

submission to one another in Christ (vv. 21-24). If the church has failed to

maintain the sanctity and integrity of life-long marriages, it is because individual

members have failed to apply and live by the code of mutual respect and

submission.

No greater example can Paul give of what a marriage ought to be, but that of the

agape relationship that exists between Christ and the church (vv. 25-33). By bring-

ing this example to the fore, Paul automatically dispels any warped paradigms of

each partner’s role in the marriage. No tyrannical husband can ever make the

claim of living a Christian marriage. Nor can a back-talking, nagging wife can

ever claim the same.

Christ loved us, the church, to the point of giving his life for us. And the church

has accepted the responsibility of submitting freely to our Lord in gracious

response to his loving act. There is a great mystery here! The mystery is that in a

profound way that surpasses all understanding, like Christ and the church are

united spiritually as head and body, so too husband and wife are united as one

integrated soul and body. This is why divorce hurts so much, because it tears into

the very fabric of what were once two integrated beings.

God did not intend for marriages to break up (Matthew 19:1-9). Sin in many

forms is ultimately what is responsible for marriage disasters. Couples that refuse

to submit to one another in the Lord display their egos, pride and carnality in their

defensiveness, false superiority, immaturity, verbal abuse, and even violence to

beat one another into submission!

Please contact the office if you require a

visitation/ home communion.

Basic questions answered according to the

Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Q. What are the principal human virtues?

The principal human virtues are called the cardinal virtues, under which all the other virtues are grouped and which are the hinges of a virtuous life. The cardinal virtues are: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. Q. What is prudence?

Prudence disposes reason to discern in every circumstance our true good and to choose the right means for achieving it. Prudence guides the other virtues by pointing out their rule and measure. Q. What is justice?

Justice consists in the firm and constant will to give to others their due. Justice toward God is called "the virtue of religion." Q. What is fortitude?

Fortitude assures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It reaches even to the ability of possibly sacrificing one's own life for a just cause. Q. What is temperance?

Temperance moderates the attraction of pleasures, assures the mastery of the will over instincts and provides balance in the use of created goods. Q. What are the theological virtues?

The theological virtues have God himself as their origin, motive and direct object. Infused with sanctifying grace, they bestow on one the capacity to live in a relationship with the Trinity. They are the foundation and the energizing force of the Christian's moral activity and they give live to the human virtues. They are the pledge of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit in the faculties of the human being.

If you would like our community to remember

you or a family member in our prayers please

complete the information in the register on the

table at the back of the Church. Thank you.

St Edward’s School Community congratulates the Parish in

celebrating 40 years. The parish has a wonderful history of

being pioneers in establishing a Catholic community in

Daisy Hill. It was a new community for a new area. We

trust that that same pioneering spirit will be present with

you as you shape a future faith community within Daisy

Hill. Congratulations.

May God’s creative presence which imbued the early

St Edward’s Community with faith, love and service be ever

present today and may God’s spirit create within you hearts

with a new vision of hope, compassion and service for the

next forty years. Amen
