Annulments

What exactly is an “annulment”?

Actually, nothing is “made” null in this process. Formally known as a “declaration of nullity,” an “annulment” is a ruling from the Church tribunal of a diocese (a tribunal is a Catholic Church court) that a particular marriage was invalid (or “null”) from the beginning.

To clarify, it must be understood that in order for a Catholic marriage to be valid, certain elements are required: (1) The spouses must be free to marry; (2) they are capable of giving their consent to marry; (3) they freely exchange their consent; (4) in consenting to marry, they have the intention to marry for life, to be faithful to one another and to be open to children; (5) they intend the good of each other; and (6) their consent is given in the presence of two witnesses and before a properly authorized Church minister. Exceptions to the last requirement must be approved by Church authority.

In cases of divorce, either party may have their marriage investigated to determine its validity or lack thereof, and, when appropriate, seek a declaration of nullity.

Bethlehem Catholic

Mission

Representatives from

the Bethlehem Catholic

Mission will be visiting

our parish next

weekend. They will speak to us briefly about their

mission and what they do to support our Catholic

brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. They will

also have a display of beautiful religious articles

handmade by our Catholic community in the Holy

Land for purchase.

Faith Formation classes will resume in September.

Registration forms can be found on the tables in the back of the Church and on our website.

All questions can be directed to Linda Hebert at [email protected] or (228) 864-2272.

A Family of Faith

All families are warmly welcomed to join “A Family of Faith,” a program designed to encourage and equip parents/

guardians to live and teach your children the Catholic Faith at home. With one adult meeting and one family meeting

each month, this program replaces traditional CCD and will give you all the knowledge and tools you need to bring

your children up in the Faith.

This year focuses on the moral life and what it means to live the way God wants us to live. From the Ten

Commandments to the Beatitudes to the Great Commandment, throughout salvation history, God has provided us

with models for living virtuously. Ultimately, He sent us Christ Himself, who gives us the perfect model of holiness and

calls us to live like Him and in Him. Together, families will come to a deeper appreciation of Christianity, not just as a

set of rules, but as a complete way of life, totally immersed in Christ and leading to life with Him in Heaven forever.

The first Adult Catechetical Gathering will be on Sunday, September 8, from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM in the Fatima Room.

Volunteers Needed

If you would be willing to assist with A Family of Faith, RCIA or Youth Ministry activities, please contact Linda Hebert

in the Parish Office. Please note that in order to protect our youth, all individuals who work with minors are required

to undergo an official background check by the Diocese of Biloxi, along with Safe Environment training.

Youth Ministry

We have an exciting year full of opportunities planned for St. John youth, in grades 9-12, to experience. In the fall, we

will attend the Diocesan Youth Kickoff Rally. Our youth, along with other youth from the Diocese, will travel to

Washington D.C. in January to participate in the Annual March for Life. The Diocesan Youth Convention will be held in

March, and we will end our year with a trip to a Steubenville conference next summer!

We would love for you to come enjoy refreshments, play games, and learn about our youth group on September 8

from 3:30 - 4:45 PM. We will meet in the Fatima Room. Please help spread the word and bring a friend!

For information, please contact Bridgett Bermond at [email protected] or (228) 209-9281.

RCIA

The Catholic Church, founded by Jesus Christ, continues to grow everywhere throughout the world. Through RCIA

(Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), we invite you to find out about Jesus, the Church He founded, and build a

relationship with Him!

Our 2019-2020 Faith Journey will begin after Labor Day on September 5. Classes are held on Thursday evenings at

7:00 PM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Please join us if you are interested in learning more about the faith,

even if you are already Catholic. Invite your non-Catholic or fallen away Catholic friends and relatives to join RCIA!

For information, please contact Mara Russo at [email protected] or (228) 265-7156.
