CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish November 16, 2014 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, When telling the story of my vocation, one of the things that I often mention is that God’s plans are not always our plans. What I mean is that, very frequently, we create a strategy for our lives based upon what we think we should do until we discover that God has something very different planned for us. Case in point: When I was graduating from high school and looking at a potential career path, I naturally examined my personal gifts and talents to determine what I wanted to do with my life. I had several talents to choose from, which could have led me in any number of directions. My musical talents, my talents in art and photography, my fascination with computer technology, and other interests could have easily led to a very different life than I am living now. I had mapped out my life, expecting to have a reasonably good career. Like everyone else I knew, I planned to get married, have children, and live “happily ever after.” It only made sense that I would pursue a career relative to my natural talents. The priesthood was the farthest thing from my mind back then. Yet, in his own mysterious way, God called. He called me to a vocation to the priesthood. During the process of discernment in the seminary, he revealed to me some hidden talents and gifts that I didn’t know I had. These latent gifts just needed to be brought into the light of day. Did my other gifts and talents go to waste because I became a priest? To be honest, I have probably used my talents much more effectively as a priest than I would have done otherwise. I’ve used my skills as an artist and photographer to decorate churches and to create parish publications and flyers. My musical skills have been put to use giving praise to God. I also learned some practical skills, like how to be a plumber, carpenter, and maintenance man – things for which many priests learn they have a capacity. What are your God-given gifts and talents and how are you using them? Are you using them in the way that He intended? Do you put them to good use to make the world a better place and to glorify God through your generous gift of self? The Parable of the Talents which is given to us in the gospel today offers us the story of three servants who were each entrusted with talents according to their abilities. The word “talent” used in this passage refers to something monetary. The first two servants put their talents to work. They took a risk through investments that had positive returns. The third was timid with the talent entrusted to him and so he did nothing with it. He didn’t lose anything, but he didn’t gain anything either. Are we like the third servant? Do we never venture outside our comfort zone and thus never really gain anything? Do we feel like we are lacking real meaning in life? The story highlights for us the reality that God has not only given us our lives, but he has endowed us with his grace and the capacity to give and to love in ways that are unique to each of us. Essentially, we get out of life what we put into it. Are we living our lives in such a 50 Years of Faith

ist” Dear Friends,

When telling the story of my vocation, one of the things that I often mention is that God’s plans are not always our plans.

The Parable of the Talents which is given to us in the gospel today offers us the story of three servants who were each entrusted with talents according to their abilities. way that everything we are is a gift to him? Or do we squander our talents and capacities, using them for our own personal ends? If we work for a living, do conduct our affairs conscientiously and with integrity so that people see the nobility of God in what we do? Does our parenting reflect the same compassion, guidance, and love that God shows to us? Do we dedicate time to prayer and worship in such a way that the whole of our lives is a sacred gift to God? Perhaps this is the time to make an honest appraisal and renew our desire to step out in faith, knowing that God’s grace multiplies what we give to him. God bless,

Concluding Children’s Liturgy of the WordIn the mid 1990’s, a ministry was begun in many parishes

throughout the U.S., including St. Pius X. Here, 12 men and women were prepared to act as leaders of the “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” during the 10:00 a.m. and 12 o’clock Masses each Sunday. The goal was to provide a context whereby the children of the parish could have the Mass readings and a reflection presented in a format more understandable to them. The readings came from a special children’s lectionary, which corresponded to the readings the adults heard in church. A short explanation oriented toward children followed, along with the recitation of the creed and prayers from the children. The children then reunited with the congregation for the remainder of Mass.

After evaluating this, we have made a decision to discontinue this activity for several reasons: 1) With recent revisions in the Mass texts and in the translations of the readings, many of the children’s readings no longer corresponded with those that the adults heard. Moreover, children’s lectionaries are no longer in print. 2) Occasionally, there were few, if any, children that participated in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. 3) Those children who are in CCD and in St. Pius X School usually discuss the readings during their classes. 4) The practice of having separate celebrations for the Liturgy of the Word for children has declined nationwide in favor of having families united during the Eucharist, so that children can grow accustomed to participating in Mass. 5) Finally, if the entire family hears the same homily, they can discuss the message of the Gospel together as a family.

ADULT EDUCATION

What a wonderful Veterans Day celebration! The students enjoyed singing all of the patriotic songs

for the veterans, especially the songs for each branch of the military. They also made special cards for the veterans. One of our parents, Captain Mike Tatsch, was the keynote speaker, whose topic focused on teamwork and the importance of family in the teamwork process. The students, as well as adults, were moved and motivated by his talk. Our 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Kathi Urbis, and our 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Michele Stovall, organized the Veterans Day program. Robbie Johnson of our church Youth Band played the piano accompaniment for the songs that were sung and the 6th grade students served as emcees. We thank them and we especially thank our veterans who have kept and continue to keep our wonderful and blessed country safe.

The P.T.O. sponsored Family Fun Night on Friday evening was well attended. Parents played games, made arts and crafts with their children and enjoyed some good food and fellowship. A brief P.T.O. meeting, with a demonstration by the Arts of Defense organization, began the evening. This event was a fantastic way to meet all of the wonderful families and staff at our school.

This week, which is the last week before our Thanksgiving Holidays, we will have a Student Council Meeting on Monday after school, a Science Fair on Tuesday during the day, a School Advisory Meeting (SAC) and Five Year Strategic Planning Committee meeting on Thursday evening and a Manner of the Month Lunch with Mr. “K” on Friday. It will be a busy week!

The school and parish November Service Project, a food drive for the needy, will be coming to an end this Wednesday, November 19th. The non-perishable food items collected by our students will be put together in baskets and given to the needy before Thanksgiving. The student’s really embraced this project as a way of carrying out God’s work

Have a Blessed Week!

Box Tops Being CollectedDear Parishioners, please consider

collecting Box Tops for Education to help St. Pius X Catholic School! You can either mail them to St. Pius X Catholic School or drop them in the collection boxes in the vestibule of the church or parish office! They will help St. Pius X Catholic School get FREE money to help our school pay for things we need, like new books and computers! Thank you so much!

A MONTHLY INVITATIONInterested in strengthening your

personal relationship with God? Join the parents of the children preparing for an initiation sacrament on the FIRST WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. Our spirituality theme this year: TEACHING ABOUT GOD’S FORGIVENESS. We meet this Wednesday in the parish hall from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.

See you there!

Parish Workday – November 29thIn anticipation of the Advent season, we will be having a

parish workday on Saturday, November 29th. Please mark your calendars and join us. We will begin with breakfast in the Parish Hall at 7:30am. All ages are welcome!

Advent-by-CandelightWomen of St. Pius X, you are

all invited to join us Saturday, Dec. 6th from 7-9pm as we

Celebrate Advent- by -Candlelight. Advent is a time for remembering how the world waited in anticipation for God’s

promised Messiah to come. But as women, it often feels like every moment of Advent is filled with cleaning, decorating, baking, cooking, helping with children’s programs, shopping, and wrapping gifts in preparation for celebrating Christmas. Like Martha in Luke 10:38–42, we are busy with many things. Our intentions are good. We become so busy preparing that we miss out on experiencing the beauty and meaning of Advent and Christmas ourselves. An event like Advent-by-Candlelight is an opportunity for women to gather together and spend some time focused on Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas. If you are interested in participating in this beautiful gift, contact Carrie Pereda: 314-458-5494 or [email protected] to reserve your space today!

Coming Soon.....Advent is around the corner. Our

Acts of Charity committee will be sponsoring a tennis shoe drive again this year. The parishes response last year to this drive was “over the top”! This year we have three shelters that we will be dividing the shoes amongst. Please look for our Christmas Giving Tree to be up in the vestibule of the church on the 1st Sunday of Advent, November 30th.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Corpus Christi appreciates and is thankful for your contribution of pop tabs. Thanks to your generosity, over the last three years we’ve collected more than 20 million tabs which allowed us to provide almost 600 room nights for our families at no cost. With your continued efforts, together we can help families find “strength in numbers”. Sincerely Michelle Horine, Executive Director
