I am sitting at my computer looking out across the little valley in front of the home I stay at on my vacation in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Little by little lights are coming on in the homes across the valley, traffic is beginning to move, and at the very top of the valley a very tall, very straight pine tree is outlined against the quickly brightening sky. Things in the house are quiet and peaceful, and my hosts are just beginning to stir. I am sitting here with my computer, a Diet Pepsi and my thoughts of Thanksgiving. For some reason I am remembering a conversation I had with my mother about her many illnesses and almost constant pain. I was questioning her about her feelings about the cross of illness, disease and pain that she almost always carried. I asked her if it made her angry or bitter to have so much difficulty and struggle while so many other people seemed to escape such trials. She got a puzzled look on her face and replied, “Why would I waste my time wishing for a life that I am not going to have, rather than thanking God for the one I have?” That answer still almost takes my breath away. When I looked at her life I saw reason for despair, bitterness, and anger. When she looked at her life she saw reason to hope, to rejoice and to give thanks. In a few days we will join in our great national feast of giving thanks. On Thanksgiving Day we will gather with family and friends to celebrate the abundance of blessings in our lives. Our homes will be filled with conversation and laughter, and our tables will be filled with all the goodness of the earth. We will take time to give thanks to God for the many blessings we have received throughout this year. There are some among us who will find this day somewhat difficult. Family illness, arguments, uncertainty about the future or the absence of a departed loved one will cast a shadow across some celebrations. Our faith reminds us that in all things and at all times we should give thanks, and it is at these moments that I most remember my mother’s words, “Why would I waste my time wishing for a life that I am not going to have, rather than thanking God for the one I have?” Like the tall pine across the valley standing straight, tall and beautiful against the morning sky, let our thanksgiving stand as a sign of God’s blessings against the background of our imperfectly wonderful and abundantly blessed lives. DIOCESAN MINISTRIES APPEAL COMMITMENT WEEKEND: Next weekend we are all invited to make a commitment to the Diocesan Ministries Appeal. You can fill out your envelope and enclose your commitment or first payment and drop it in the collection next weekend. We will gather our commitments and forward them to the Diocese of New Ulm. Our parish goal this year is $27,066.10. Your support of the DMA goes only and exclusively to the ministries listed on the commitment form. Twenty percent of every dollar donated will come to back to Holy Family for our designated project of air-conditioning for the basement of the church and adequate heating for the meeting room in the parish education center. Please be as generous as you are able.

THANK YOU: We thank the generous donor who covered the cost for our music resources for the year. We appreciate the support this donor showed for our ministry of music.

WELCOME: We welcome Fr. Bob Mraz home as he moves back into the parish. Fr. Bob is retired from active ministry and we look forward to seeing him around.

BOOK OF THE DEAD: During the month of November we will have our Book of the Dead in the front of church next to the votive candles. Please feel free to write the names of your faithful departed in the book, so that we might remember them in prayer.

COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN: Prolife collection: There is still time to drop off items for Birthright Crisis Pregnancy Center through Monday, November 26, 2018. A list of needed items can be found on the pack-n-play in the back of church. Let’s fill it up! For all monetary donations, please make checks payable to Birthright and place in envelope and drop off in the weekend collection or the parish office.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: Now Available through KC Council #1841: Keep Christ in Christmas cards are available and in the back of church. Prices are marked on the boxes of cards. Please pay for them with the envelopes provided. Payment may be dropped off in the collection, at the Church office, or mailed to SL Knights of Columbus ~ PO BOX 93 ~ Silver Lake MN 55381-0093. Thank you for doing your part to “Keep Christ in Christmas” by sending religious Christmas cards. If you have questions or need additional cards, contact Bob Penas 327-2122.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Additional Volunteers are still needed as Substitute Catechists and Prayer Listeners. If you are interested in volunteering in one of these areas, please contact Lori Penas at the parish office. If you are not VIRTUS trained, there is a new class being offered in Litchfield at St. Phillips on Monday, November 26 at 6:00 p.m. Please visit www.dnu.org/safeenvironment and click on the red box on the left side to register. Give Away…Tube TV’s & VCR’s: We still have some VCR and DVD/VCR players as well as tube TV’s available that we are giving away. The TV’s vary in size from 20” up to 27” and would be good for the cabin and/or gaming systems that do not need USB or HDMI cables. We are also giving away the jumbo TV and stand in the lower level of the Church (good for gaming or playing movies only). Some of the TV’s will include the wall mounts that they are currently on. If you are interested in any of these items, please contact Lori Penas at the parish office to make arrangements to pick them up. All items must be gone by November 21.

THANKSGIVING DINNER: Bruce Bebo and friends are hosting their Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 22, 2018 serving at noon at the auditorium. If you would like to assist in volunteering or donating, please call Bruce or Deb Bebo at 320-327-3157 or the city office at 320-327-2412. BOOK OF THE DEAD: During the month of November we will have our Book of the Dead on a podium in the back of church. Please feel free to write the names of your faithful departed in the book, so that we might remember them in prayer.

THANK YOU: We thank Mary Ann Thalmann who generously covered the cost for our music resources for the year. We appreciate the support she showed for our ministry of music.

CHRISTMAS TREE SALES VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP: Our annual Christmas Tree sale fund-raiser is fast approaching. The Knights of Columbus are coordinating this fundraiser, and we are grateful for their help. On the table in the gathering area you will find a work schedule sign-up. We will be selling trees on Sunday, November 18 and Monday, November 19 and then every day from November 23 – December 22. We need help filling the shifts. Please sign-up to help and make this fundraiser a success. We remind our Confirmation candidates that this is a great opportunity to get service hours, but that if you sign-up one of your parents must accompany you.

CHRISTMAS CHOIR FORMING AND PRACTICING: Anyone interested in being part of the choir for the Christmas Eve Mass is invited to practices on December 2, 9, 16 and 23 at 8:00 a.m. in church. We hope to see you all there. We especially invite our high school students to consider participating. Sue Mielke has graciously accepted the ministry of directing the choir for Christmas.

Our parish goal this year is $20,159.02. Your support of the DMA goes only and exclusively to the ministries listed on the commitment form. Twenty percent of every dollar donated will come to back to St. Pius X for our designated project of capital improvements to the church and parish center. Please be as generous as you are able.

COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN: Please watch for a letter in the mail concerning the upcoming Christmas Bake Sale to be held on the weekend of December 8/9, 2018 Proceeds from this event go to the “St. Pius X Education Programs”. A Sign-Up Sheet will be in the Gathering Area for volunteers to help before and after the weekend Masses.

THE RE CONNECTION: In anticipation of Thanksgiving, there will be no RE class this Wednesday, November 21, 2018. Not wanting to hand you some idealistic line, yeah, sometimes in life it feels like there just ain’t a whole heck of a lot to be grateful for. However, it is usually just a matter of taking some time to reflect and realize that even in the midst of suffering, the love of the Almighty is everywhere. President Washington was pretty wise in that regard when he declared that first National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving back in November of 1789. We are blessed to enjoy the liberty of showing our gratitude to our Creator as we see fit. In the Hallowed Halls, we want to thank you for your continued prayerful support, and we wish all of you in the pews a most Happy Thanksgiving! May your hearts ever cherish the manifold blessings bestowed upon you by a very loving and merciful God! The 2018 Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest will be run in the RE program again this year. Information and entry forms will be distributed to RE students on November 14. The Deadline for posters to be turned in is December 12. Judging will be done on December 19. Winners and runner ups in the three categories will be announced in a General Assembly January 2, 2019. There are three age categories: Ages 5-7, Ages 8-10, and Ages 11-14. The prize for first place in each category is $20. The prize for second place is $10.

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATED AT HT: World War 1 formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. With its 100th anniversary fast approaching, come this November 11, 2018, the Holy Trinity Third graders are praying for and honoring current Winsted military personnel. Veterans Day is a day to be dedicated to the cause of World Peace and to be thereafter celebrated for all of the many men and women who have made and had given us our freedom. Every day, during the month of November, we as a class pray for 24 Winsted military personnel. Each student was then given a family prayer card and 3 "toy soldiers" that have the names of three Winsted military personnel tagged on them.

DIOCESAN MINISTRIES APPEAL: “A Gift of Self”: Next Sunday is Commitment Sunday for the 2018 diocesan Ministries Appeal. Watching the video today, we are reminded of the good work the DMA is doing in ministries too big for parishes to do alone, but ministries that are important to us. Remember, in supporting the DMA, we contribute to those important ministries in the diocese, but we also support the projects each of our parishes have identified. An explanation of the parish projects and parish goals can be found on the parish pages of this bulletin. As you reflect on what your pledge should be, prayerfully keep in mind God’s generosity to you. The DMA offers a great opportunity to make a return to God of the blessings we have received. This year with the theme, “A Gift of Self,” Bishop LeVoir invites us to consider all that we can accomplish when people and parishes work together. Be assured that contributions to the DMA will be used only for the benefit of the ministries designated in the brochure and no other purpose.

ST. PIUS X CHRISTMAS TREE SALES UNDERWAY: The annual St. Pius X Christmas Tree Sale event begins this week. Please see the St. Pius X Week at a glance section for a schedule of when you can purchase your tree.

CHRISTMAS GIVING PROJECT UNDERWAY: Our participation in the McLeod County Christmas project is underway. There are collection boxes for toys for children from 1 day – 17 years old in each of the parishes. Let our generosity be a proclamation of God’s generous gift of salvation.

DIOCESAN ADVENT PRAYER SERVICE: All families, especially those with children, are invited to attend an Advent Prayer Service with Bishop John M. LeVoir on Sunday, December 9. The service is at 4:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Anastasia in Hutchinson. This service is designed to help us focus on Advent and prepare for the true meaning of Christmas, centered on the birth of Jesus. Families are encouraged to bring the Baby Jesus figure from their home nativity set. The figure will be blessed by Bishop LeVoir individually as families come forward in procession. There will be a blessing for families and expectant mothers as they prepare for Jesus’ birth in their hearts. A “swaddling clothes” collection (blankets, sleepers, layette items, etc.) and cash donations will be taken for babies in need. For more information, contact the diocesan evangelization and catechesis offices at 507-233-5325.

SIGN-UP FOR FORMED: Please take time to sign-up and begin using Formed today. When you go to the formed.org website push the button that is marked “Enter Code.” Our parish code is RJHGCW. Follow the on-screen directions to create your account.

PLEASE BE GENEROUS in the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in seven people lives in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in your diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection. Please make your checks payable to the Church of the Holy Family, the Church of the Holy Trinity or the Church of St. Pius X. We will consolidate all of our donations and forward them to the appropriate organization. We are not able to cash checks made out to the specific organization or collection.

THANKSGIVING: This will be the final week to donate to the St. Pius X and Holy Family Council of Catholic Women and the Holy Trinity Worship Committee sponsored Thanksgiving collection of food items for the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf. Food shelf collection boxes for non-perishable food items are available at the entrances to the Church of the Holy Family, a table for nonperishable food items is in the new entrance at Church of the Holy Trinity and bins are in the gathering area at Church of St. Pius X through Thanksgiving.
