Announcements

We thank you for attending St. Thomas today. If this is your first time in an

Orthodox Church, you may find the Liturgy books at the entrance of the nave helpful

for following along (just ask if you feel a little lost!). Sometimes, simply maintaining a

worshipful presence, open to the Holy Spirit, is a good way to start.

After Divine Liturgy, please join us in the back for coffee and conversation. If

Orthodoxy is new to you, you may have lots of questions! We’ll do our best to help.

During Holy Communion, non-Orthodox Christians are warmly welcome to

seek a blessing from the priest, and/or partake of the blessed bread on the small ta-

ble — if you’d like. The Eucharist in the Orthodox Church is intended for those who

have been educated in, and accepted, the beliefs and practices of the Orthodox

Christian Faith, and who have been baptized and/or chrismated into that Faith. We

would not impose on you any profession of belief (through Communion or any other

practice) with which you may not agree or feel comfortable.

10th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST — Tone 1. Afterfeast of the Transfiguration

After the Entrance: Tone 1 Troparion (Resurrection) When the stone had been sealed by the Jews, while the soldiers were guarding Your most pure ^body, You rose on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world. The powers of heaven therefore cried to You, O Giver of Life: “Glory to Your Resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your ^Kingdom!// Glory to Your dispensation, O Lover of mankind!” Tone 7 Troparion (for the Feast of Transfiguration) You were transfigured on the mount, O Christ God, revealing Your glory to Your disciples as far as they could bear it. Let Your everlasting Light shine upon us sinners through the prayers of the Theotokos!// O Giver of Light, glory to You! Tone 7 Troparion (for St Herman) Joyful North Star of the Church of Christ, guiding all people to the Heavenly Kingdom; teacher and apostle of the True Faith; intercessor and defender of the oppressed; adornment of the Orthodox Church in America: blessed Father Herman of Alaska,// pray to our Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of our souls! Tone 1 Kontakion (Resurrection) As God, You rose from the tomb in glory, raising the world with Yourself. Human nature praises You as God, for death has vanished. Adam exults, O Master! Eve rejoices, for she is freed from bondage and cries to You:// “You are the Giver of Resurrection to all, O Christ!” Glory… Tone 6 Kontakion (Protomartyr Stephen) You were the first to be sown on the earth by the Heavenly Husbandman, O all-praised one. You were the first to shed your blood on the earth for Christ, O blessed one. You were the first to receive the crown of victory from Him in heaven,// Stephen, first of the suffering God-crowned martyrs. ...now and ever…

Tone 7 Kontakion (for the Feast of Transfiguration) On the mountain You were transfigured, O Christ God, and Your disciples beheld Your glory as far as they could see it; so that when they would behold Your crucified, they would understand that Your suffering was voluntary, and would proclaim to the world// that You are truly the Radiance of the Father. Tone 1 Prokeimenon Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us as we have set our hope on You! (Ps 32/33:22) v: Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the just! (Ps 32/33:1) Tone 7 Prokeimenon Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. (Ps 115/116:15)

Epistle (NKJV): 1 Corinthians 4:9-16 Galatians 5:22-6:2 (St Herman)

For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now. 14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become con-ceited, provoking one another, envying one another. 1 Brethren, if a man is over-taken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gen-tleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s bur-dens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Tone 1 Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! v: God gives vengeance unto me, and subdues people under me.. (Ps 17/18:47) v: :He magnifies the salvation of the King and deals mercifully with David, His anointed, and his seed forever. (Ps 17/18:50) Tone 6 v: Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His command-ments. (Ps 111/112:1)

Gospel (NKJV): Matthew 17:14-23 Luke 6:17-23 (St Herman)

And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus an-swered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus re-buked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for as-suredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be im-possible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. 22 Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up. And they were exceedingly sorrow-ful. And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all. 20 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. 22 Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, for in like manner their fathers did to the prophets. (Instead of “It is truly meet …,” we sing:) Magnify, O my soul, the Lord Who was transfigured on Mount Tabor!

Your childbearing was without corruption; God came forth from your body clothed in flesh, and appeared on earth and dwelt among men. Therefore we all magnify you, O Theotokos

Communion Hymn Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest! (Ps 148:1) O Lord, we will walk in the light of Your countenance, and will exult in Your name forever. (Ps 88/89:15b) The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not fear evil tidings. (Ps 111/112:6) Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
