explanation is possible.”

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

J ESUS and his disciples set out for the villages of

Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his dis-

ciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They said

in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one

of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you

say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the

Christ.” Then he warned them not to tell anyone about

him.

He began to teach them that the Son of Man must

suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief

priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three

days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside

and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and,

looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get be-

hind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as

human beings do.”

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and

said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must

deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For who-

ever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses

his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”

Centering Prayer An Introduction to Contemplative Practice

St. Albert’s Centering Prayer group, led by JoAnn and

Chuck Baird, will resume its first Monday of the month

meetings on Monday, September 7, at 7:00 pm in the

chapel.

On Centering Prayer

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CC), § 2653,

says:

The Church ‘forcefully and specially exhorts all the Chris-

tian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus

Christ’ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scrip-

tures…Let them remember, however, that prayer should

accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dia-

logue takes place between God and man. For ‘we speak to

him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the

divine oracles.’

Centering Prayer is a spiritual custom based upon the

Word of God, Lectio Divina. We strive to increase the

time we spend alone with God to 15-20 minutes twice a

day. The purpose of our gathering is to encourage one

another each month in this sacred, individual practice, in

the words of CC, § 2560, in “the encounter of God’s thirst

with ours.”

All members of the Centering Prayer group invite you to

join them in the joy of this spiritual discipline.

Grief Support Ministry

Crossroads

Saint Albert the Great offers two monthly grief

counseling sessions, the second and fourth Sun-

days of the month, starting September 13 and

27,12:00 pm – 1:30 pm in the Parish Office

Building, Gathering Room, (down the steps

from the church parking lot and around to the

side of the building facing the school).

Crossroads is for any person experiencing a

life-changing event, such as the death of a

loved one to other life-changing events.

JoAnn Baird would like to share this ministry

and she welcomes others’ participation.

For more information you can e-mail JoAnn at

[email protected] or leave voicemail or a

text message on her cell phone 925-699-4765.

She will get back to you.

From the desk of: Ted Krembs, Parish Administrator

To: The Parishioners of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church

Now that we are underway for the 2015-16 year, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the

operational issues of Saint Albert the Great.

#1. Please accept my gratitude for the immense effort put forth for Father Honesto Agustin’s installation Mass and

reception. Those who volunteered to work the celebration, you are to be commended for your effort. But even you

who came to the celebration but could not find a parking spot or had to stand on the porch; I am very grateful to you

for your understanding and support. It was a wonderful event and I can tell you that your understanding is truly appre-

ciated.

#2. We have engaged a weekend custodian to assist in keeping the church and restrooms clean and stocked. I hope you

will no longer have issues going forward. Also, the electric doors to the restrooms are to address the ADA. We

thought electric eye automatic doors would be spiffy, but it turns out they are not. We have replaced them with but-

tons.

#3. The grounds are beautiful in comparison to the obstacles behind the scenes we have had to overcome. When we

turn off the water for the season, we will need to address the irrigation system fixing the valves and multiple issues.

#4. We attended the Corporate Board meeting on September 2, 2015. This is an annual review of our operational vir-

tue as stewards of your gifts given to St Albert the Great. I am pleased to report that we were lauded for our presenta-

tion. Now that the financials have been reviewed and deemed valid, I will be publishing them for your review soon.

In closing, I wish to thank each of you for making this parish organization not an institution, but a family. Many of

you do so much that at times seems to go unnoticed, but please know that your efforts make a huge impact on the

overall well-being of St Albert the Great. Whether dusting the dirt blocking a door or just being present praying quiet-

ly in the church, your gift is changing lives and growing the Kingdom of God.

deacon’s corner Conversations at Table

WHO DECIDES? WHO GETS TO DECIDE WHAT IS GOOD OR EVIL?

Deacon Chuck Lanham

W HO DECIDES? Who gets to decide what is good or evil? On the face of it that sounds like a rather simple ques-

tion but such questions often belie simple answers. Linguistic logic and clear interpersonal communications notwith-

standing, modern cultural propensities generally grant anyone full license to define words in whatever manner they

find convenient or desirable. This becomes particularly evident whenever the subject of morality enters the conversation, especial-

ly when touching upon such topics as good and evil.

Now for those of us who hold a firm belief in God and who confidently share in the conviction that we have been en-

dowed by our Creator with a conscience and the innate ability to know what is good and what is not we find little to question. But

for those who may see things differently, things are seldom so straightforward. The question then becomes: how might the word

‘good’ be defined without God? “Simply put: who gets to define what the words ‘good’ and ‘evil’ mean? If we’re not going to

derive our understanding of goodness from the character and nature of God, for example, then from where? Who, precisely, gets

to step into God’s empty shoes and define the content of the word ‘good’? Now that’s a crucial question, for unless we know what

we mean by the word, then to proclaim that something is ‘good’ is utterly meaningless.”1

Bertrand Russell once quipped in response to the question “How do you tell the difference between good and evil?” by

announcing “On the basis of feeling” which I suspect is how many of us make our moral choices. How something feels (do what

feels good, don’t do what feels bad) to us sounds reasonable but then how do I come to terms with your feelings which don’t agree

with mine?

For example (please, this is for illustrative purposes only and is in no way indicative of my own personal feelings,) sup-

pose I feel greatly inspired when I play on a piano whose keys are made of ivory obtained from elephant tusks while you feel ap-

palled at the atrocious brutality inflicted upon those unfortunate pachyderms. Whose feelings win out? Who decides?

Obviously, leaving moral choices to the vagaries of personal preference or feelings isn’t at all reasonable, yet these days

that is exactly how many of us decide what is good or evil. Words have meaning beyond whatever we declare or wish them to

mean. Likewise, allowing constantly changing social custom to define morality raises similar issues. Social customs vary across

geographic, ethnic, political, and societal boundaries and who then has the authority to impose their own specific moral values on

others. Who decides?

“In the absence of God, there are two options: you can turn every individual person into a little godlet, able to decide

good and evil for themselves. But then who evaluates between them when there are clashes between godlet claims? Alternatively,

you can turn the state into God and let it determine good and evil, but then might becomes right and you have sheer, naked brutal-

ity. In short, if you try this latter route, morality becomes meaningless. If you go down the former route, morality becomes impos-

sible.”2

CHWC—Catholic Heart Work Camp

Saint Albert the Great is seeking one man and one woman at

least 21 years old who would be willing to chaperone the

CHWC 2016.

A qualified chaperone will need to have or be willing to have

a full background check and attend Protecting God’s Chil-

dren.

The 2016 Catholic Heart Work Camp for Reno will take

place Sunday July 3 to Saturday July 9, 2016. (This includes

the 4th of July that Monday).

What is CHWC: a detailed explanation can be found at

http://heartworkcamp.com/dates/reno-nv/, but in summary,

CHWC is a social outreach event that serves the neglected

and in need and offers the participant an opportunity to live

as Disciples of Christ through serving others. As a Chaper-

one, you will go out into the city of Reno and oversee youth

as they serve the poor in a variety of settings and needs. In

the evening you will stay overnight at Bishop Manogue High

School. (Yes: eat, sleep and shower there too) for one week.

If you are interested, I encourage you to check out the

CHWC website; and then contact Ted Krembs at the parish

office – 775-747-0722 ext 5606. St Albert has successfully

participated in this offering for two years now and those who

have gone on this journey have many wonderful things to

say about it.

RCIA needs you to talk to

the people in your life!

Did you know that, through the Holy Spirit, meeting just one

person who is Catholic can make a difference and help people

to join the church? Could YOU be that person for someone

else you know?

I think there are many of you in this church that could be “agents” of the Holy Spirit for someone in your

lives. I am asking you to please pray about that and to invite anyone you think might be interested in

learning more about the Catholic church to attend our RCIA informational session.

Do you have a friend who asks you questions about your faith or seems to want a closer relationship with

God? Why not invite them to come learn more about the Catholic Church? You could say something

simple like, “I just learned about a program you might be interested in at my church.” You could volun-

teer to come with them to the informational session.

RCIA gives people who would like to explore the possibility of becoming Catholic, and for Catholics

who have not been Confirmed or received First Communion, an opportunity to come into full commun-

ion with the church. We meet on Wednesday nights and each week have different topics, with a mix of

classroom style learning, faith sharing, group discussion, etc. We will also assign a member of the parish

to be a sponsor to accompany each person on their journey. There is no pressure to commit, if at any time

they decide they are not ready to join the church.

This year’s RCIA informational session will be held on Wednesday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the

Chapel.
