Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Joseph’s Parish Bulletin – September 8/9, 2019 OPT FOR THE CROSS If Jesus’ message is not softened, it is a difficult message. Carrying one’s own cross, shouldering the instrument of torture and death is the equivalent of cooperating in one’s own death. That’s what Christ asks me to “sit down and decide” if I am willing to do. It is the condition for becoming his disciple and for making it to the end of my life as a faithful friend and follower of my Lord. CONVERSATION WITH CHRIST Lord Jesus Christ, you lead me by example. I thank and praise you, because you go before me and show me the way. You also give me strength to carry my cross every day. So, as I kneel down and consider what you ask of your followers, I decide to undertake this arduous task out of love for you. RESOLUTION Looking ahead to what this day holds for me, I can identify my cross. I will resolve to carry it, asking God’s help in prayer and striving to bear it with spiritual joy. GOSPEL REFLECTION THIS WEEK – (LUKE 14.25-33)

HATING ONE'S FAMILY

In today's Gospel, Jesus says something shocking, "Anyone who comes to me without hating father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, cannot be my disciple." We should realize that it was intended to provoke a response. If we took his

words literally, it would be the exact opposite of all that he preached. But are the words meant in the literal sense? Jesus used what we might call "reverse psychology" to elicit a commitment from his disciples. Many came to him because he was a free physician. They had only a passing or no interest in his teachings. His words might be interpreted to say, "Anyone who wants to be my follower must love me far more than he does his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, or sisters--yes, more than his own life--otherwise he cannot be my disciple." (Today's English version of the Bible). (Father R. Lonsdale)

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME REFLECTION: In this gospel, Jesus lays out the demands of following him, the great cost of discipleship. Why is the cost of discipleship so high that we must even give up our lives? Because we follow Jesus, who gave his life. We must carry our cross, and this means the daily discipline of self-sacrifice for the sake of others. We must also renounce all our possessions, which means letting go of anything or conduct that causes us to question discipleship or swerve us from the path of following Jesus. In human situations we calculate the cost of finishing a difficult or expensive task. So also, Jesus helps us calculate the cost of discipleship—it demands everything we are and everything we have. Jesus intends no surprises for those who choose discipleship; here’s the fine print: we have to die to self if we wish to follow Jesus.

Jesus, you are the faithful disciple of God, -may we help to carry the burdens of others.

Jesus, you carried your cross with faith and trust, -may we patiently endure times of suffering.

Jesus, give us the grace to always ask the question, -“What would Jesus do or say if He were here?” Amen
