SUMB Orange Peel | 2Meet the Director, Professor Justin Mertz

Greetings! I hope you are all having a good and productive summer, that your jobs or internships are going well,

and that you’re getting some time to relax and enjoy the time off from school. It’s very quiet up here without all of

you and we look forward to seeing you back on campus. Trust me, the summer will be over before you know it,

so be sure to make the most of it!

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what makes the SUMB special. Among other things, I think it’s

that we are able to create a purpose-driven community that includes people from all walks of life where people

can “be who they are.” There just isn’t anything else like the SUMB on campus – not only because nothing else

is a marching band, but also because there is no other thing that has the close-knit community that we do, one

that spans every age group and school and college on this (and other!) campus(es). It’s unique, and I think that

we should all take a second and appreciate the fact that members of the SUMB have a musical and social

experience that no one else can. If you’re thinking about joining us for the first time, I strongly urge you to do it.

Be a part of the SUMB family.

We are already deep into planning for the 2016 season; music is currently being arranged and I’m positive you’ll

truly enjoy performing it. We will again be performing a lot of music this year and our shows include a wide

variety of music, from music celebrating the spectacle of the Olympics to the music of the most influential women

artists as we mark 50 years of women in the SUMB (where else but a marching band can you find such a weirdly

fun variety of music?). As always, I am eager to hear your ideas for music for us to play in the stands; you can

email me at [email protected] and let me know what your suggestions are. If you find yourself in the Syracuse

area this summer, be sure to stop by and say hello!

To the Leadership and returning Vets: I anxiously await getting back to work on another season. Your dedication

and hard work make the SUMB the great band it is; thanks to your dedication and commitment there is no limit to

what the SUMB can achieve. I am very much looking forward to working together again, and I urge you to share

any ideas you have.

To the incoming Rookies: let me be the first to welcome you to SU and/or the SUMB. You are in for an incredibly

fun and memorable experience that I’m sure will start (or continue) your college careers off in fine fashion. The

Drum Majors, Leadership, and I will work hard to orient you to the Pride and the University.

Everyone: college bands have an interesting and multifaceted mission: to

reach and entertain large numbers of diverse audiences, and to make their

host campuses better places to be. Let’s show them what the SUMB is all

about!

All of you will have to take responsibility for the continued success of the

band. Sometimes, we have to contend with circumstances outside our

control, like how good our sports teams are(n’t). No matter what, we must do

what we have always done: strive for and attain musical and visual

excellence. This is a great time to be in the SUMB and as you saw from the

last few years, there is no limit to what we can achieve when we all do our

part.

As you read this, Band Camp is just a few months away! It may seem like a

long time, but it will fly by. Until then, know that things are already happening

to guarantee a fun and successful season. Enjoy the rest of your summer,

and of course…Go Orange!

Hey band: the brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi would like to offer our band members a great opportunity in StudyUMB! StudyUMB is a great way for band members to come together and study in a quiet place. We reserve rooms throughout the semester and we try to pair students with other members in similar majors and classes to help make study time more efficient. If you're interested in participating, just “like” the SU Marching Band page and during the semester be on the lookout for the weekly list of reserved rooms! Can't wait for the season to start!Joshua McCLearyKappa Kappa Psi- Vice President of Service

Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma are the national honorary band fraternity and sorority whose membership is open to

college students who have participated in a college band program. Our common goals are not only to provide the band with

organized service activities, but also to give our membership quality experiences in leadership and social contacts while

assisting the Directors in developing quality ensembles. The fraternity and sorority, founded in 1919 and 1946 respectively,

are now present in over 100 major colleges and universities. Famous alumni include: John Phillip Sousa, Doc Severinson, and

Count Basie. The national aspect of our fraternity and sorority provides our members with many contacts from other

universities throughout the year. The Eta Phi and Eta Alpha Chapters at SU serve a major role in all band activities. Brothers

and sisters are always ready to assist the band in service as well as provide such intangible items as morale, spirit,

enthusiasm, and a positive attitude within the band, always remembering that “It is an honor to be selected to serve.” If you have

any questions concerning the organizations, ask any Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma member at band camp.

Registration for Marching Band

(Important Information!)

To participate in the SUMB, you are required to register for

marching band, ENI 510, Section 001. Freshmen, your

home college will register you for this class. Upperclassmen,

if you are at your maximum credit load, contact Fran

Moore for a permission code. Students who are NOT VPA

majors or VPA minors will be charged $75 per credit hour for

VPA courses. These charges will be applied to your bursar

account after the Financial Drop Deadline.

Credits for SUMB can count as an elective in numerous

degree programs. However, not all programs accept band

credits as electives. If a SUMB credit can not count as

an elective in a specific degree, it does not mean you

cannot participate. Check with your advisor to see if band

credit may be counted as an elective for your major.

Grading is based on attendance, preparation, etc. as

described in the course syllabus (included in the SUMB

Handbook that you will receive during band camp).

Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band,

Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, & Music Minor

Auditions for the SU Wind Ensemble (ENI 510, Sec. 002),

Symphony Band (ENI 510, Sec. 005), Orchestra (ENI 540,

Sec. 001), and Jazz Ensemble (ENI 520, Sec. 001) will be

held during the first week of classes. Check the bulletin

board outside of the University Band Office, 402 Crouse

College, for audition times and locations.

Concert Band is a non-audition ensemble open to both

music and non-music majors. It offers an opportunity for all

to perform outstanding large band works. The Concert

Band meets one night a week during the spring semester

and provides an excellent opportunity for Marching Band

members to make music in a concert setting.

Looking to minor in music? The Setnor School of Music

offers a Minor in Music Performance for 18 credit hours, 8

of which have to be in ensembles. The rest may be in any

music course of your choosing. Ensembles or music

classes that you have already taken here at SU may be put

toward this minor. Please contact Dr. Bradley Ethington

([email protected]) or Mr. Justin Mertz ([email protected])

if interested. If you need more information, please call

the Band Office at (315) 443-2194.

There are many tough decisions that a high school

senior has to make, and some of the most important

ones involve which col lege to attend and what to

study. Another big decision is whether or not your

student would like to continue being involved in music in

college by participating in bands and, especially, in

marching band. Here are some of the questions most

asked by family members when their student is

considering joining the “Pride of the Orange.”

Q: Does my student have to be a music major to play in theSUMB?A: Not at all! Over 70% of our marching band members are in a major other than music.

Q: How much of a time commitment is the SUMB?

A: There will be three two-hour rehearsals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (7:00 pm - 9:00 pm) during weeks when there are no games. A Friday evening and Saturday morning rehearsal will be added for performance weeks.

Q: Will my students’ grades suffer because of marching band?A: No! In fact, the grade point averages of marching band students are higher than the overall university averages.Band members’ GPAs are often higher in the fall semester than they are in the spring when the band no longer meets.

Q: My student has a tough major. Will there be time formarching?A: If a student wants to be in the band, there is time! Someone already in the band probably has the same major as your student and can provide peer information to help.

Q: If my student doesn’t get involved with the band program the first year, can he/she still participate later on?

A: Of course! Just let us know so that we can keep your student information on file.

Q: Will I be able to spend time with my studentduring band camp?A: No. Once the students' arrive, they will be rehearsing throughout each day of band camp.

Q: Do we need to buy season tickets to football games for our student?

A: No! As a member of the marching band, he/she will not need tickets to the football games. If you’d like to buythem for yourselves, please contact the Carrier DomeTicket Office at (315) 443-2121 or go to suathletics.com.

“As there was not a marching band in our local high school, I

was concerned that my daughter might not have the

necessary marching experience. No need to worry. Band

Camp taught her all that she needed to know to be ready to

confidently enjoy the Band's first performance. In addition to

moving in early, my daughter made her first college friends at

Band Camp, as well as other students in her major who

would go on to act as mentors to her. Starting her first

semester at SU knowing many of her peers and feeling

comfortable on campus set her off on the road to success.”

“When my Southern California born and raised son

decided to attend college at Syracuse University,

I was more than a little concerned.

Thankfully, his band mates welcomed him with open

arms and became his family for four great years!

We can’t possibly thank you all enough!”
