What type of Flake are you?
Visit snowflakes.barkleyus.com to
make a flake online!
First, you need a square. Take your rectangular piece of
paper and fold one of the top corners down.
Trim off the excess at the bottom to form a square.
Fold the square in half to form an isosceles right triangle.
Fold the triangle in half along it’s line of symmetry. You
should have another isosceles right triangle.
Now you want to fold your triangle into thirds.
Trim the top.
You will now have an isosceles triangle.
Cutting the Snowflake
• To make the snowflake, you can cut shapes from each of the sides of your triangle, and you can cut off the vertex angle. To personalize your snowflake, cut your shapes by answering the following questions.
Top (base of the isosceles triangle)
How old are you?• From the top of your triangle, cut
the following:
9 years old – cut a semicircle10 years old – cut a rectangle11 years old – cut a triangle
Folded Edge
What’s your favorite season?• From the folded edge of your
triangle, cut the following:
Spring – cut one triangleSummer – cut two trianglesFall – cut three trianglesWinter – cut four triangles
Loose Edge
What’s your favorite subject?• From the folded edge of your
triangle, cut the following:
Math – cut a semicircleScience – cut a rectangleLanguage Arts – cut a triangleSocial Studies – cut a trapezoid
Tip (vertex angle of the isosceles triangle)
Do you have a pet?• If you have a pet, cut off the tip
(vertex angle) of your triangle.
What kind of flake am I?This snowflake has
a semicircle cut from the top, a rectangle and a semicircle cut from the loose
edge, two triangles cut from the folded edge, and the vertex
angle cut.
Here is the finished snowflake. Can you find the shapes?
