Throughout the lifetime of your bike parts and components will need replacing or upgrading, below are a few points to look out for when it comes to replacing or upgrading key parts.

REPLACING KEY PARTS OF YOUR DRIVETRAIN

Replacing the bottom bracket (BB) can be a fairly regular occurrence depending on how often you ride and in what weather conditions. To ensure a new BB fits it’s important to know the length and width of your current BB and the type and make of your current crankset. Common types of BB include: square taper, external, Shimano Octalink and ISIS.

BOTTOMBRACKET

With a shorter lifespan compared to other drivetrain components your chain will more than likely need to be replaced a number of times due to the amount of stress it’s put under. To find out if your chain has stretched and needs replacing we highly recommend using a chain wear tool. When purchasing a new chain it’s important to make sure it’s the correct length, for example, if you have eight gears you’ll need a chain suitable for an eight gear setup.

Chainsets usually consist of a left and right crank arm, crank spider, axle and chainrings. When it comes to upgrading or replacing your chainset it’s important to look out for the crank arm length, try to get the same you already have; common sizes are 170-175mm. The amount of chainrings on the chainset is also key, depending what you prefer, single, double and triple chainring options are available.

How long your cassette lasts will vary according to the amount you ride and the weather you ride in; keeping your chain well-lubricated will help prolong the life of your cassette. When it comes to changing your cassette, the new one must have the same amount of cogs/gears as the old one (usually between 7 and 11).

Junior BikesOnce the rider is confident on a bike they only need to have the ball of their foot on the floor to maximize growing room and ensure safety. Ideally the rider should have a few inches clearance over the crossbar to make safe stopping easy and allow for maximum manoeuvrability.

Hardtail Mountain BikesWhen riding off-road it is important to have a slightly smaller frame than you would for normal road riding. This is for two reasons; firstly to increase the amount of clearance you have over the crossbar to a minimum of 3 inches, and secondly, a smaller frame will handle better over more challenging terrain. This will put your position slightly more forward once the seat-post height is extended.

Full Suspension Mountain BikesThe range of frame sizes available for full suspension models is usually smaller than hardtail bikes. More than any other discipline, full suspension sizing is down to personal preference. Most seasoned riders prefer to choose a smaller frame as this can improve handling on more technical trails.

Road BikesSizing is all-important here as the rider is seated in a horizontal aerodynamic position. Only 1-2 inches of clearance over the crossbar/top tube is needed. Road bike sizing can vary by manufacturer so it’s worth calling our sales team for advice if you are unsure.

A mixture of your measurements, confidence, riding style, previous bikes, model choice, etc, will all play a part in sizing correctly. For a general guide follow our charts, however, please remember that these are only guidelines and personal opinions may differ. Hybrid Sport BikesOn a hybrid sport bike only a 1-2 inch clearance is required over the crossbar/top tube to put you in a well-balanced and comfortable position. Due to the style of Hybrid Sport bikes your riding position will be slightly more forward than mountain bikes. For suspension seat-post models take 1” off the frame size you require.
