The Clean Air Act of 1990 requires recapture recycling and safe disposal of chlorofluorocarbons CFCs and hydrochlorofluorocarbons HCFCs used in air conditioners refrigerators and freezers as coolant Under the Act no one
may accept an item containing CFCs and HCFCs for recycling or disposal unless the Freon contained within It Is
properly removed and the owner hauler appliance company can show proof of proper removal It is also unlawful
for any person to knowingly release or vent CFCs or HCFCs into the air The EPA requires certification for all
technicians removing Freon as of 11 14 94 For more information call the EPA s Stratospheric Protection Hotline at
