and, while scenic and serviceable, it isnot a particularly good road. I you ollow Westside all the way to its end, you will ind yoursel at River Road about three miles west o Wohler.

he character o the Russian River Valley is a bit di erent north to south. henorthern reach has much more o a Dry Creek Valley eel. Up north the wineries aregenerally larger, newer, and perhaps a littlelashier than in the south, which has a morerustic eel.

On the map, the southern Russian River

Valley is a large area with irregular shapethat is somewhat wider than it is tall. It isbounded on the north by River Road, whichbecomes Old River Road near Guerneville;and on the south by state Highway 12, whichbecomes Sebastopol Road and then theBodega Highway as it runs east to west. Onthe west, the Bohemian Highway shapesthe area, running rom near Guernevillesoutheast to Freestone. Highway 101 ormsthe eastern boundary.

State Highway 116 runs diagonally through the southern valley, romGuerneville in the northwest to Sebastopolin the southeast. Other important roadsare Mirabel Road, which connects RiverRoad and Highway 116; Guerneville Roadconnecting Highway 101 and Highway 116;and Olivet Road connecting River Road andGuerneville Road. All along this skeletono roadways and many smaller roadsbranching rom it are a myriad o wineries where you can taste Pinot Noir, Zin andel, and other wines produced in the RussianRiver Valley appellation.

he major towns youll want to consider visiting in the southern Russian River Valley are Sebastopol, Graton, Guerneville, andOccidental. Forestville is also importantbecause it is home to some good wineriesand is located at the junction o MirabelRoad and Highway 116.

In Sebastopol, you can enjoy an easy stroll

along Main Street to take in antique, art,and book shops among other homegrownstores and restaurants that somehow are only ound in small towns. Youll indthe Sebastopol natives to be riendly and

welcoming i a bit quirky. Noncon ormity is the norm among many locals in thisunabashedly authentic and American smalltown.

he hamlet o Graton is essentially a widespot in Graton Road just west o Highway 116 near its intersection with Guerneville

Road and about our miles northwest o Sebastopol. ake a ew minutes to walk the downtown area, occupying just acouple o blocks along Graton Road. Youllind surprising touches o sophistication

including good restaurants and interesting shops.

I youve stopped in Graton, you might as well continue on along Graton Road aboutsix miles to the southwest to Occidental. Yet another micro-town, Occidentalseems impossibly cute, but is remarkably authentic. Here again you will ind goodrestaurants and many interesting shopsto browse. From Occidental, you can headnorth along the Bohemian Highway toGuerneville or go south to Freestone where you can pick up the Sebastopol Highway (Highway 12) back toward Sebastopol. Or, you can just go back to Highway 116 the way you came.

Guerneville is about 12 miles to the

northwest o Graton along Highway 116, andabout 15 miles to the north o Occidentalalong the Bohemian Highway route. During the warmer months, which can be seven oreight months in the Wine Country, it is theocal point o much activity or visitors tothe many rustic resorts along the RussianRiver.
