Band Presents Small Ensemble Performance

In a departure from their usual format, The Woodlands Christian Academy band presented a small ensemble performance on Wednesday evening, February 24. The evening featured performances by the 7th & 8th grade band and the high school band. Specific ensembles, including brass, clarinets, flutes, saxophones, and trombones each took center stage to play selected music highlighting their instruments. Even the percussionists were front and center while performing their numbers! Thank you band members and Mr. Charlton Hughes, band director, for a delightful evening of beautiful music.

Poetry Out Loud Competition

In 2005, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation joined together

to create Poetry Out Loud, a program that encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through exploration, memorization, and recitation. In December, 2015 The Woodlands Christian Academy held its own competition to determine who would represent our school at the state level in Poetry Out Loud. Sophomore student, John Harkins was chosen to advance to the state

competition.

Harkins recently traveled to Austin, Texas for the competition which included 27 other students from public and private schools across our state. He recited two poems, From Space To Time, by Carolyn M. Rodgers and Barter, by Sara Teasdale. While Harkins was not among the five finalists, the experience left a big impression, “Everyone was very supportive of each other and our readings. In the end, we all rallied around those who qualified for the final five. They presented amazing poems! It was great to hear other public speakers and learn from their techniques. I would love to do this again!”

Warrior Happenings

MARCH 4, 2016

In the course of learning about time management, organization and learning styles, students in Mrs. Lisa Woods’ 8th grade study skills classes created short lessons, which they taught in actual classes. The lessons were created for 2nd and 3rd grade students and featured simple science experiments. The

experiments included creating a volcanic eruption using baking soda, as well as dish soap and yeast, and making ice cream by shaking a self-sealing plastic bag filled with milk, sugar and vanilla. Both the students and their teachers learned a lot from each other through this exercise.

Warrior Track Update

The track program continues to grow and improve!  Between middle school and high school we have 130 athletes participating this year!  Thanks to all the parents and volunteers who have helped support our track & field meets and our teams. This past weekend the varsity team was at the St. John’s School for a meet against Houston Christian, St. John’s and Woodlands Christian.  We did very well and showed that we can compete with those much larger schools and their athletes.  A few highlights:    - Darcy Sanford finished 2nd in the long jump, 3rd in the high jump, 1st in the shot put, and 2nd in the 100m hurdles.    - Avery Tudor finished 2nd in the shot put and 3rd in the discus.    - Riley Farra finished 2nd in the 300m hurdles.    - Olivia Gregory finished 2nd in the 3200m run.    - Hannah Shearer finished 3rd in the 3200m run.    - Jake Copeland won both the 110m and 300m hurdle races!    - Ryan Doner won the 400m dash.    - Boys 4x400m relay (Jake Copeland, Jake Adams, Alex Yanochik, Kyle Clark) won the race!    - Kyle Clark won the pole vault competition.    - Joshy Shearer set a school record in the 3200m run and finished second overall!  He also finished in second place overall for the 1600m run.  Shearer is ranked #25 in the state of Texas (public and private schools) for freshmen in the 3200m run and #15 for the 1600m run.

The Warrior varsity baseball team posted a 2-1 record in the San Marcos Academy baseball tournament this past weekend. The Warriors returned home on Tuesday, March 1 for a game with Covenant Christian and came away with a 4-3 win. The team now looks forward to the Rotary Club tournament in Cleveland, Texas on March 3-5. A home game is on tap for Tuesday, March 8 when the Warriors host Brazos Christian. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Come out and enjoy the great spring weather and support your Warrior baseball team!
