caveinspiredmusic.com WORLD MUSIC CAVING BALLADS UNITED STATES Introduction Starting in 1972 the National Speleological Society has sponsored annually a Cave Ballad Salon where cavers present their music and ballads. The best of these ballads were first released on an LP album, Where the Rain Never Falls, in 1972 by William Zarwell, the first chairperson of this salon. Later the NSS Cave Ballad Salon sporadically released cassette recordings of the winning ballads from this competition: in 1973, The Grand Kentucky Junction & Other Songs; in 1982, Hollow Hills and Other Songs; and in 1991, Echos (sic) in the Dark. There was another cassette of American caving ballads, Hodag’s Greatest Hits, released by the Diablo Grotto in Pittsburg, California around 1985. Today, thanks to the work of Barbara am Ende, the present chairperson of the salon, many of the caving ballads from the first year in 1972 up to the present (with a few exceptions because not yet completed) can be heard together with the full lyrics for some on the NSS Website, under Cave Ballad Salon. In the future links will be provided for each song listed here which is available on the NSS Website. Normally only music released on discs (shellac, vinyl, or compact) are included in this discography, but, due to the fairly small number of recorded caving songs and the evident interest among cavers, an exception will be made to also include here those caving songs recorded and released on cassettes. For the United States the total known recordings of cave songs and ballads released prior to 2005 comprises three LPs and four cassettes. There are 32 caving ballads here on vinyl and many more on cassette tapes. Two ballad writers standout most noticeably, Barbara MacLeod with her "The Encounter of the Long Count Keeper" and David Foster with his "The Caves of Alvarado;" These are masterpieces (in my opinion) ranking right up there with some of the best by Bob Dylan. All entries are determined by the performer, not by the song titles. So when an LP has several different performing artists, each performing only one song, then the songs on that LP are all listed as separate entries. Frequently on the cassettes a performer will sing more than one of their ballads and thus all the songs by that artist on that cassette will be listed alphabetically as one entry under the song writer’s name. The lyrics of most of these cave ballads are available in the caving literature and transcriptions of these texts will not be included here. As always, titles followed by a red asterisk indicated songs that talk about specific actual caves. _____________________________________

THE BALLAD OF THE CASCADE CAVER FK – Cave Ballad – Vocal – Cave Pic Cover

Comp: Barb MacLEOD – Nov. 1961 Rts: 1972 NSS Cave Ballad Competition

Perf: Barb MacLEOD (vocal) Prod: William Zarwell Prod. Co: NSS Cave Ballad Competition Song Award: 1972 – 2nd Prize, Original Ballad Time: 0:19 LP: WHERE THE RAIN NEVER FALLS (PC-RE# ) (No label) BH 3-1016 (stereo) 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 4) Notes: A “Cascade Caver” was someone who did a lot of caving in the Cascade Mountains in the state of Washington and was probably a member of the Cascade Grotto. The lyrics mention "Canyon" at least seven times, so one needs to known which cave in the Cascades had a passage by this name. At the 1974 Fall MAR meet, Dale Ibberson of the York Grotto organized a ”Boogie,” a special 8-track tape presentation of this entire record plus three other LPs in the entrance room of Snedegars Cave in, Pocahontas County, West Virginia. This was not the first time that new caving lyrics had been put to the tune of "The Whiffenpoof Song." George Sipkin (NSS #416) wrote lyrics to what he called, "The Caver's Song," which was published in the NSS News in May 1949 and copyrighted by the NSS. HISTOPLASMOSIS FK – Cave Ballad – Vocal – Cave Pic Cover

Comp: Barb MacLEOD – June 1961

Rts: 1972 NSS Cave Ballad Competition

Perf: Barb MacLEOD (vocal)

Robert Novak (vocal) Prod: William Zarwell Prod. Co: NSS Cave Ballad Competition Song Award: 1972 – Honorable Mention, Original Ballad Time: 3:22 LP: WHERE THE RAIN NEVER FALLS (PC-RE# ) (No label) BH 3-1016 (stereo) 12" 33rpm (Sd 1 – Bd 2) Notes: This is the earliest Barbara MacLeod cave ballad that we have on records. It was composed in St. Louis in 1961 and recorded over ten years later for the first NSS Cave Ballad Contest. Barbara sings her lyrics in the third person telling "about a caver I knew well" who walked through a pile of bat guano in a cave and ended up contracting histoplasmosis, the caver's disease. Actually , it was she herself who came down with histo after exploring Bat Cave in Shannon County, Missouri with two other members of the Middle Mississippi Valley Grotto around 1959. Fortunately she recovered. The introduction is spoken in Spanish and the first verse starts out in a way very reminiscent of Andrew Jenkins' first Floyd Collins ballad –

A sad story I have to tell About a caver I knew well Who frequented the places Where the rain never falls …

The title for this LP album of caving ballads was taken from this third verse. This song was often sung around MMV campfires all through the 1960s and I heard Barbara perform it out under the stars at the GGG (Greater Guano Grotto) Bust in Lovell, Wyoming at the 1969 NSS Convention. So by the time it was entered in the ballad contest in 1972, it had already become a classic standard among caving songs. Co: NSS Cave Ballad Competition Time: 0:35 LP: WHERE THE RAIN NEVER FALLS (PC-RE# ) (No label) BH 3-1016 (stereo) 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 6) Notes: Milk River is the name given to a passage not far southeast of the original entrance of this very extensive cave in South Dakota. The "river" is "a brown and white slope of mud where water from the dripping ceiling collects and seeps into a quiet pool." For sixty years the crawlway here was the "jumping-off point" for expeditions deep into this cave labyrinth. (Conn 1977) This brief song tells about the calcite flow, soda straws, and the mud slopes on the banks of the Milk River. It ends with – And the mud from old Milk River will be with me wherever I go. CAVER’S PARADISE * FK – Cave Ballad – Vocal

Mus: "Paradise" Comp: John PRINE Lyr: Paul ASH

Rts: National Speleological Society

Perf: Paul ASH (vocal & guitar) Prod. Co: NSS Cave Ballad Competition Time: CASSETTE: HOLLOW HILLS AND OTHER SONGS National Speleological Society (No Cat. No.) 90min (Side A – Tk 2) Notes: The ballad writer, a caver from southern Indiana, said that he wrote this "for my brother Don, who started me caving at the age of 9 right around our then home of Paoli, Orange County, Indiana." The first stanza and chorus talk about– When I was a young kid, my brother would take me Down by Lost River was where we would roam, 'Cross ridges and sinkholes in search of the caverns, Always within twenty miles of home. CHORUS: So Donnie won't you take me on back to Orange County Down by Lost River where caves do abound I'm sorry my brother you're too late in askin' They've ripped, raped, dug, and flooded the ground.

The reference is to the Lost River area with its many caves and thousands of sinkholes, including Lost River Cave. In 1961, Orange County had over 55 known caves. (Powell 1961) The lyrics mention the SCS, whatever that was? Judging by the lyrics it was some kind of society or engineering firm intent on building a dam in the Lost River area. It is always a mistake to use initials in a ballad because, even when the song is current, the majority of the listeners across the country don't know what they mean. No.) 90min (Side B – Tk 1) Notes: A comic rewrite of the lyrics to the popular Roaring Twenties song, "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight," which had been covered and revived in the States in the late 60s. B. am Ende credits this ballad to Rob Stitt, but L. Novikoff, who participated in the 1974 Ballad Contest and published the songbook right after, credits this one to Nick Noe. A definite period piece, because cavers of today are not familiar with Goldline rope, the all-purpose American braded caving rope of the 60s, and many others do not know what Swiss-made Jumar ascenders even look like. A very poor recording where the lead singer is muddied in the mix under the ever-present military marching choral backing and the band. No.) 90min (Side B – Tk 2) Notes: Alderson relates that the ballad "originated over the Thanksgiving holiday 1973 when Doug and I were part of a caving trip to Alabama and Georgia. The song most directly applies to a descent down Fantastic Pit." The "CRCN" gets mentioned in the chorus four times – And if I can't stop this trembling hand from dropping all I own They'll be calling on CRCN before this trip is done. but it is not known what these initials mean, possibly some kind of "Cave Rescue Committee," judging by the context. Perkins was from Virginia. "Sittin' on a porch in Pulaski County" in the Inner Blue Grass Karst Region, south of Lexington, Kentucky, he asked why he has to go back to the city. 90min (Side A – Tk 4) Notes: The comic ballad writer talks about going "down to the land where the big caves grow," which could mean a lot of good caving states. He's so enthusiastic that, when he snagged a hollow tree while fishing, he named it Hollow Tree Cave, and "crawled right in and started mappin'." He dreams about the hassle of trying to put carbide in an electric light and not having any light to watch his dream by. And he tells of how he wished for a cave that goes for miles in his own backyard, so he started digging. "Don't tell my friends, though – I tell 'em that dogs dug that hole." He plans some day of going caving in Mexico – "AMCS here I come !" (AMCS = Association for Mexican Cave Studies). He ends talking about all the cavers that talk a lot about caves in bar rooms – Sure talk a good cave, though. You could write a guidebook if you had a tape recorder. Transcribe it and sell them a copy. Ref: am Ende, Barbara Anne 1996, Cave Ballads 1972-1979, National Speleological Society, Huntsville, AL, p. 1975-45
