Introduction:This document examines 1000 and 2000 level Communication courses that are core required and elective courses for the Bachelor’s of Arts degree programs at William Paterson University. It looks at them along side corresponding courses available at Mercer County Community College. The goal is to consider one aspect of how feasible it would be to offer a WPU Bachelors of Arts in Communication degree at MCCC. Comparing course offerings allows us to see whether students who wished to attend the WPU program would be able to complete their lower level core courses at Mercer based solely on what courses are already being offered.

Summary of Findings:1. The vast majority of courses MCCC students would need to take, in order to complete the requirements of the first two years in any WPU Communications degree program, are already available to them at MCCC. The only exception to this is WPU’s rather specialized Theatre & Comedy degree program, the courses for which find few exact equivalences in Mercer’s offerings.

2. With the exception of one Research Methods class, which is required for four of the six WPU degree programs, and a Foundations of Language course that is needed for another, MCCC already offers all core and required classed at the 1000 and 2000 level for the WPU Communications degrees.

3. Although some of WPU’s 1000 and 2000 level Communication electives are not offered at MCCC, most are. Furthermore, other common undergraduate Communication electives are available at MCCC that are not currently available at WPU, including courses such as CMN 147 - Social Media Technologies and CMN 215 - Communication and Gender. The latter is recognized by the State of New Jersey as a General Education class. It is reasonable to conclude that some electives that are available at MCCC could be substituted for the few WPU courses that are not offered.

Note Regarding Accuracy of Comparisons:The author has taken care to read course descriptions side by side to ensure the core of each course’s content is consistent with that of its paired course at the other institution. In the interest of transparency, it should be made clear that there are two electives where the corresponding course given is not a perfect match. The first is WPU’s COMM 2350 Film as Cross-Cultural Communication class, for which MCCC’s ENG 221 - Literature into Film is given as its equivalent. This is an imperfect fit, though in analyzing the course descriptions the author felt the intent of the courses was reasonably similar to warrant the listing. The same is true for COMM 2620 - Communicating Food, for which HOS 115 - Food and Culture is given as its equivalent. Again, course descriptions were consulted and the pedagogical intent of the two courses seemed to overlap enough to warrant the inclusion.

Communication Courses

*As with other “equivalent” courses listed here, the MCCC course does not have precisely the same focus as its William Paterson counterpart.

NOTE:William Paterson’s Communications: Theatre & Comedy BA degree program is highly specialized, focussing on an element of artistic training --comedy improvisation-- that is not common to most college level theatre programs. As a result, Mercer’s Theatre offerings only partially intersect with this degree track.
