7 December: Friends of YAPS had a stall at Carols @ Yorkey’s Knob event. It was a lovely community event with some talented young

dancers dancing their hearts out as well as the singers from a local choir (Soul Song Choir) and one of our dog walking friends Zita, is a

member. The band playing was called Blue Tonic, (pictured below) kept us entertained as well. Mary Claus wandered around with a

basket of candy cane which were a big hit

for all the kids. She looked lovely (see pic).

As it grew dark, more people came with

their chairs and picnic blankets. The

playground was a big hit with the kids while

parents watched the entertainment. Kids

could get their face painted too.

Thank you to Ivanhoes Junior Rugby League

Club (who did the sausage sizzle) who

donated the left over cooked sausages to

the gorgeous dogs at YAPS. I popped them

in my freezer and took them to YAPS the

following weekend. I am sure the lovely

dogs at YAPS appreciated them.

This was a great community event. Thank you to those involved with this event for

making it happen.

Michael Trout (that politician dude) bought some raffle tickets from the

FOY stall. I’m not into politics so had no idea who he was but we had our

photo taken with him. His Iphone I think put about 20kg’s on me so not

a flattering pic haha. Now I see his face on huge posters around the

place. Seems like a nice bloke and his partner too. So here’s our claim

to fame.

Left to Right—Michael, Diana Pettersen, Chris Broussard, Paula Morrison

and myself. Thank you to Tricia and Carol for helping out as well and

Terri (McCarthy) for hanging out with us too.

Friends of YAPS volunteer Christmas Party has come and

gone. Thank you to everyone who came and made it a great night. A shame others couldn’t make it though. We had some great music by DJ Glenn (and DJ Wayne) and we all at some stage had a dance. We had to encourage Terri (YAPS dog walker) to get up and have a dance and she finally did, yaay. Myself and Denis (Terri’s husband) concur that Tricia is the new Beyonce the way she kept shaking her bootie. It was great to see Kym (YAPS volunteer) on the dance floor getting into the groove. Myself, Tim and Kym all commented on the Sunday @ dog walking that we hadn’t been on a dance floor for many years and we really enjoyed ourselves.

It was my first time at Cairns West Bowling Club and it made a good first impression with the good food (thanks to the Chef) and lovely staff. I met some characters “Max” and “M&M” (not the chocolate) who put their names on the ’money board’ as well as Max buying some cards. .. Thank you fellas :) Max actually won the raffle prize that night and donated back and in turn was given to Kym who volunteers at YAPS. Kym is “special needs” and she was so overwhelmed and ever so grateful. She loves helping out at YAPS and seeing the dogs so was a great xmas treat for her. Marley and Eve did a great job with selling the raffle tickets for a box of prizes and raised $152 (at first count) Well done girls and thank you to Kay Birch for her wonderful job with putting together the raffle prize.

All in all it was a wonderful night with some lovely people.

Thank you to FOY for my Bunnings gift vouchers for my efforts with the newsletter. I love doing it and as long as I’m involved with YAPS and FOY, there will always be something to read :)

Merry Christmas to all of you and have a safe new year.

DJ Glenn Eve and Marley

THANKYOUs DJ Glenn, DJ Wayne, Diana Pettersen, Kay Birch, Marley and Eve

I adopted Syd (formerly Teko, a Ridgeback/Kelpie X) towards the end of 2008, he chose me more than me choosing him. I knew I wanted to get a rescue puppy for as long as I could remember so on a trip to Cairns I finally went to see what was available at YAPS. He was in a pen with maybe 10 litter mates and hung back the first time I walked passed, on the return walk though I stopped and went into the pen with all the puppies and he came forward and SAT on my feet and just looked up at me, so what option did I have really. After all the paperwork was sorted out Teko and I started our journey back home to Karumba, he was such a chilled out little puppy just slept the whole time and cuddled into a shirt I'd put on the seat for him.

Needless to say he has been spoilt ever since, my Mum was the one who finally named him Syd after a few failed naming attempts on my part. She said for a puppy that was so relaxed and dopy all the time it just fit - Syd the sloth from IceAge :) except he is actually a very smart dog. He was a typical puppy always getting into some sort of mischief; chewing my plants, running of with shoes AND terrorizing the kitten that I had rescued from the dump (they became amazing friends).

He's a very well travelled dog, he's been with me on all my moves - Weipa, flying to WA - Cataby, then driving back to Karumba and to Mackay - and took it all in his stride. He is the best travelling companion a girl could ask for - he loves riding in the back of my ute and cuddling with me in my swag and knows his "inside" manners. I think he liked living in WA best since as we were only 45min from the beach and he could just run for miles and chase the cuttlefish/sticks I threw into the water for him - he's not so great at returning whatever was being thrown but absolutely loves chasing them, and rolling in the sand definitely rolling in the sand. Its one of those funny things with Syd, he loves water but absolutely hates bath time.

We moved to Mackay in 2010 as I had work in the mines there and after about a year I got Syd a puppy who ended up with the name Elmo. They were terrors - beautiful but just terrors. In total we had Elmo for about a year until I was forced (through work commitments) to find Elmo a new home (he's loving it there and has a little boy to play with). I managed to keep Syd with me for about 7 months after that but could not deal with the idea of giving my companion to anyone I didn't know so after persuading my Dad he became my parents dog in November on 2012.

He now has a playmate here (Labrador - Jess), 3 cats (Spook, Chong and Flea) and 2 birds and is absolutely lapping it up. My parents own a business in Karumba and both dogs role out the welcome wags, licks and cuddles for everyone willing to stop long enough. He and my dad are a pair to see, Syd waits for him to be finished in the shop of a night time so they can go for their evening ride up to the airstrip and lays around in the laundry/under rooms hoping for some breakfast scraps of a morning too.. Dad calls him Old Man or Sydy Boy.

I couldn't be happier with how everything has turned out, I moved back home at the start of this year so now I get to see him all the time. He has turned very much into my dads dog though and I couldn't separate them even if I wanted to.

A big thank-you to YAPS and the work everybody does to look after all the animals in care - without you my

journeys would have been lonely and my parents fur family incomplete

A RESCUE STORY By Maxi Tunney

Thank you Maxi for the article. My dog Matilda was Katherine NT born and came with us to WA (and now Cairns) and she too loved

swimming and running at the beach (and chewing out the cuttlefish) and what beautiful beaches they are and magical sunsets. Anna
