Five-Time! After a an-other victory, the Hays A team celebrates the start of their comeback. They had a loss to Ruppenthal one round earlier. Mark Schuckman (8) and Bren-dan Chapman (8) knew they could still possibly win the fi rst place medals. "We were stunned," says Chapman, " since we lost our fi rst round, but we knew, if Ruppenthal lost twice, we could still win."

Below: Medal Moment! As the Hays Quiz Bowl meet winds down, Mr. Bernasconi prepares to announce the winners. The meet took place on Feb. 10 at our school. The B Team took third while the A Team took second.

Left: Cross-City Blowout! The score reads 90-10 as Hays A team demolishes TMP in their fi rst round. The round in room 213 ended 120-10.

Team Stumper! Pondering their question, the Hays B team can't come up with an answer. This happened dur-ing their ghost round in Mr. Lindenmeyer's Room.

ContestsQuiz Bowl

At their last meet, the Hays Middle School Quiz Bowl Team had high expectations. The A Team had gone undefeated at all of their meets. The B Team had not placed at Ruppenthal and were looking to turn things around. The 8th grad-ers came out strong in their fi rst round, win-ning against TMP 120-10. However, in their third round, they lost the fi rst time of the season. Ruppenthal beat them 55-70 in an action-packed round. Even though they had just lost their fi rst round, they did not give up. They came back, sweep-ing all other opponents away. There was a tie for fi rst place, and the team they tied with was Ruppenthal. As a result, HMS placed second in the meet, just below Ruppenthal, who won by default. In their pool, the B Team had

some tough competi-tion as well. However, they took third in their pool. Trego took fi rst in the seventh grade divi-sion, as Ruppenthal took second. Since the A team only lost one round, and the B team placed as well, they were fi ne with how it ended. Eighth grader Lacey Gregory says, "We had a really good season except for that one loss to Ruppenthal." The B teamers also had a good season. They had four medals total, and the A team had fi ve. With all of the serious competition, they did not forget to have fun. "My favorite meet was Ruppenthal," Gregory says, "but the suburban rides were the best part of all." With a successful season, the Quiz Bowl team was fully satisfi ed with how it went.

This season was no walk in the park for the 8th grade Lady Falcons. The girls faced some tough competition. Coach Cure spoke about some of the challenges they faced,"It was difficult get-ting the girls to play together as a team rather than for themselves." The A team re-cord was 8 wins-14 losses and the B team record was 15 wins- 7 losses. “I think that one of the most

challenging things about this season was the fact that there wasn’t as much of a skill level gap between our A and B teams as most of the teams we went up against,” said A team hitter, Abby Balman. Overall, the girls were happy with their season."It was nice to see how much every-body improved from our first game to our last," said B team hitter, Tara Hertel.

This year was the first year that HMS provided seventh grade sports. With this came both chal-lenges and perks. “Being a part of the first seventh grade volleyball team was a fun experience because I had never played school sports before,” said seventh grader, Emma Brun-gardt, a setter on B team this year. When asked about some of the chal-lenges the girls faced during the season, Kallie Leiker, a hitter on A team said, "It was hard to get used to having

positions because when I was playing volleyball when I was younger I never really had a certain one [position] to play."" The addition of seventh grade sports was made this year because all of the other teams that HMS competes with either had an existing seventh grade team or were making the addition this year, " said Ath-letic Director Mr. Rupp. Overall, add-ing seventh grade sports has benefit-ted the school and its athletes.
