New age, conscious is probably the most fitting way to describe Virginia artist Zaiah Burke’s style of rap. Influenced by the likes of Kanye West, The Roots, Rakim and Common, Burke has formulated his rap sheet with hard work, persistence and positivity. The all too familiar athlete-turned-rapper was not cliché for Burke who found himself rapping about things he couldn’t relate to. Once he realized the whole “gangster rap” façade wasn’t for him, he put pen to paper and truth to tracks.

Burke released his first album, The Book Of Isaiah: Finding His Way on iTunes, featuring feel-good tracks like “I’m Dreamin’”. On his second project, The Zaiah Burke Story, he collaborated with Nickelus F on “Young Gifted And Black” and teamed with Tabi Bonney on “F.O.C.U.S.”.

“It means something—you can actually touch people and make a difference in someone’s life,” he said. “This random person that doesn’t know me feels how I feel.”

Burke, no stranger to demanding crowd participation and putting his kicks on the ground and performing, has managed to arrange over 20 appearances for himself since 2009, including performances at showcases from Virginia Beach, Va. and across the country to Hollywood, Ca.

Like any other music artist confident in their craft, Burke hopes to someday be rewarded in the form of a Grammy, but not without leaving one thing with his listeners—positivity.
