Anastasia ItkinaGraphic designer, printmaker

Born: 1994; Moscow, RussiaLocation: San Francisco, CA

Education: Graduated from BA (Hons) Graphic Design, University of Hertfordshire, UK (with First Class Honours) in 2015 and studied at British Higher School of Art and Design in Russia.

Activity:My key interests are editorial and various prints. I like to create bold graphics using geometric shapes and bright colours. I am interested in tactility and physical manipulation and explore the possibilities of an analogue interaction in printed media through my prints and editorial projects. I run several personal projects including annual postcards and stamps collections and themed photo series.

Hi, nice to meet you.

‘One book with 100 spreads about 10 numbers’.

‘00–99’ is a book dedicated to ten simple digits, from 0 to 9. Each digit is presented in 17 different images none of which shows the actual symbol. Images in the book make you think of a particular digit by provoking associations. Associations used in this book are connected to art, films/cartoons, cultural traditions, religions, geometric shapes, typography and punctuation, technology, etc. The main aim of this book is to make people be curious, make them think and establish a new relationship with any single number by discovering the variety of its interpretations.

The book is totally handmade: digital printing is combined with manual silkscreen. Images are screen printed with fluorescent inks that makes the book look intriguing and mysterious under the ultraviolet light.

The Music Box is an analogue musical instrument that produces sound using programmed sensors and piezo buzzer. It consists of a wooden box with digital contents, a special board for notes and black beads that are used to ‘write’ the melody. The board covers 2 octaves. Each hole in the board is related to a specific note and placing a black bead in this hole means playing it. The board should be dragged through the box that transforms beads’ combinations into the sound. There is a special white column on the right side that works as a pitch transposer. Placing beads in the yellow and the white rows simultaneously makes the box play the yellow note in the 5th octave instead of the 4th. You should not place more than 2 beads in one horizontal row.

At some point in life each of us should have at least a few favourite secret places around the world. They can be tiny or huge, popular or hidden from viewer’s eyes. But these special places are some-thing we always want to return to and what makes us feel happy and excited. This small handmade zine shares 10 places around the United States which the author has noted while travelling and which have left their indispensable traces in the heart. The places have been chosen completely randomly, mentioning small attractive spots from various states.

In September 2015 Glug commissioned the artists to design posters to raise awareness of the 17 Global Goals set by the United Nations at the Summit. This list of ambitions for the world aims to improve life for everyone, tackling poverty, equality and climate change. These goals were adopted by 193 world leaders as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Glug premiered its film #glug17 in London, a ten-minute documentary interviewing 17 top international graphic designers and illustrators about their poster designs aiming at a better life for all of us. As a member of Just Be Nice Studio Anastasia became a part of this movement and produced a poster to support clean and affordable energy (the Goal #7).

O12 is a protein ice cream brand. The product range which has been developed for professional athletes is now being developed to suit all kinds of consum-ers who are on a diet and lead a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, the new product packaging does not include sport elements and patterns as it was originally designed and is focused more on tastes.

In addition to visual changes we have modified the type of packaging and the whole production method. The original product was sold in a typical glass with a lid. In addition, the cost for such glass was too high: the packaging was purchased in the UK due to some problems with finding cups of similar quality in Russia. The new cardboard boxes allowed the manufacturer to vary the volume of products and finally launch the production in Russian cities.

Our hands are the way of sharing our love and care with animals. We use our hands to communicate with the nature. The Moscow Zoo Friends’ Club asks people who care about our four-legged friends to give a hand and donate money to bring the habitants of the Moscow Zoo under protection. Thus, the identity for the Friends’ Club is based on a symbol of “a hand” and “an animal”. A set of colourful patterns depicts the variety of creatures that need help and support from the visitors and adds a positive attutude to the ideology of the Club.

Every member of the Friends’ Club receives a card (one of four types depending on the donation amount), a booklet with all necessary information regarding the donation. Besides acquiring a non- limited access to the Moscow Zoo the member gets a number of privileges and memorable gifts.

#1Each series of postcards explores a different topic, be it a 4-colour process printing technique or simply a geometric shape. In most cases the inks used for the prints are neon and make some parts of the images shine under the UV light.
