FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT (YEAR A) MARCH 22, 2020

Today’s Gospel Reflection: John 9:1-41 LIGHT “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14). We are at the midpoint of our Lenten journey of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep” along the road to conversion. The most powerful stories of conversion are pro-claimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake us out of our sleep. To-day’s Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind exposes

the real blindness in the time of Christ—the blindness of the self-righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks, at the Easter Vigil, the Church will proclaim “Christ our Light” as the paschal candle is carried into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that still pervades our lives, communities, and world, be dispelled by the Christ who comes to bring sight to the blind and light to the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FASTING During Lent, those of age 18 until the beginning of their 60th year are obligated to observe a day of fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Denying or limiting oneself of food reminds us of our dependence on God and God’s infinite care for us. Thus it also compels us to remember and to help those who fast not by choice or religious obligation but by lack of food and resources. Fasting means eating only one full meat-less meal per day. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to main-tain strength, may be taken, but together they should not equal a full meal. Liquids, including milk and fruit juice, may be taken between meals. If health or ability to work is affected, one is not obligated to fast. On other weekdays of Lent, eating more mod-est meals is also strongly recommended.

ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. All the faithful are bound by Church law to abstain from meat on these days from the day after their 14th birthday. Pastors and parents should ensure that children who are not bound by the laws of fast and abstinence are cate-chized in an authentic sense of penance, conversion, and recon-ciliation.

CONFESSION Frequent Confession is generally said to be once a month and this would be a good practice to have all year long. Resolve to make a good examination of conscience.

PENANCE Our Lord told us that penance is necessary for salvation. Works of penance are a way of mortifying ourselves and growing in sanctity.

GOOD WORKS Visit the sick, visit people in nursing homes, support pro-life efforts, take someone to Mass with you on Sundays, get in-volved in social justice programs.

ALMSGIVING Increase your donations to the Church, give to cloistered monas-teries or convents, support the missions, support crisis pregnan-cy centers, support Christian Service Programs, help the poor.

SPIRITUAL READING Read the Bible at least 15 minutes daily. Read a good Catholic book. Read from the lives of Saints.

ENTERTAINMENT We can drastically limit our TV viewing, give up favorite pro-grams or give up television altogether. Perhaps instead we can watch a good program as a family or a religious video. Rather than going to secular movies, rent a religious film to watch as a family.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Laetare Sunday “Rejoice, Jerusalem! Be glad for her, you who love her; re-joice with her, you who mourned for her, and you will find

contentment at her consoling breasts.” This Sunday is known as Laetare Sunday and is a Sunday of joy. Lent is half over, and Easter is enticingly near.

This Sunday was formerly called “Laetare Sunday” since its mood and theme was one of hope and rejoicing that Easter was near. In the reformed calendar this Sunday is not different from the other Sundays of Lent even though the entrance antiphon for the day still begins with the Latin word “laetare” and the vestments worn by the celebrant are rose-colored, not violet.

The day is important because it is the day of the second scruti-ny in preparation for the Baptism of adults at the Easter Vigil.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes are increasingly hard to come by, and now there is another item that is topping the list: toilet paper. Sanitizer is easy to understand, but why toilet paper? Mental health and wellness expert Bill Prasad breaks down the psychology. “This is very much at times a lot about copycat be-havior,” Prasad explained. “If you see someone in the store stocking up on toilet paper, you are thinking, ‘OK. Como siempre, Dios no se da por vencido con noso-tros, especialmente con aquellos que “duermen” en el camino a la conver-sión. Los más grandes relatos de con-versión se proclaman en estas sema-nas finales de la Cuaresma. Estos tienen el poder de sacudirnos de nuestro sueño. El relato del Evange-lio de hoy sobre la curación del ciego de nacimiento expone la verdadera ceguera en tiempos de Cristo –la ce-

guera de los líderes religiosos que se creían muy buenos y jus-tos. Dentro de pocas semanas, en la Vigilia Pascual, la Iglesia proclamará a “Cristo nuestra Luz” cuando el Cirio Pascual es llevado dentro de las iglesias oscuras de todo el mundo. Estimados feligreses y amigos:

Conducta imitadora. A medida que COVID-19 continúa extendiéndose, las toallitas desin-fectantes y gel desinfectante para manos son cada vez más difíciles de conseguir y ahora hay otro producto que encabeza la lista: el papel higiénico. El desinfectante es fácil de entender, pero ¿por qué papel higiénico? El experto en salud mental y bienestar Bill Prasad analiza la psicología: “Esto pasa muchas veces por el comportamiento de imitación”, explicó Prasad. “Si ves a alguien en la tienda abasteciéndose de papel higiénico, estás pensando ‘que bien, yo debe-ría hacer lo mismo; eso me parece una buena idea. Yo también lo haré’”. Otra explicación del fenómeno es lo que se conoce como el síndrome “miedo a perderse algo” (FOMO por sus si-

glas en inglés). La Profesora Asociada Nitika Garg, investigadora del comportamiento del consumidor de la Universidad de New South Wales, expresó a los medios de comunicación: “La persona piensa que si alguna otra persona está comprando, debe haber una razón y ella necesita obtenerlo también”. Durante este “Toque de Queda”, además de depositar nuestra confianza en Dios a través de la oración, los católicos podemos usar esta “conducta imitado-ra” para aliviar el pánico de nuestra sociedad y ayudarnos mutuamente mediante la práctica de obras de caridad. Por ejemplo, el niño de siete años Jimmy-Dean Hudson, de Southend, Inglaterra, ha estado gastando su propio dinero para comprar papel higiénico para regalarlo a sus vecinos ya mayores. Mientras que muchas personas en pánico compran para abastecer sus artículos para el hogar, este niño comparte.

Encontrar a Jesús en lugares inesperados. Para evitar la propagación de la pandemia, la Diócesis de San José ha suspendido las Misas desde el 14 de marzo de 2020, hasta nuevo aviso. La suspensión cayó el Tercer Domingo de Cua-resma, Ciclo A. De acuerdo al Evangelio, Jesús se encuentra con la mujer de Samaria en el pozo. Ella no esperaba en-contrarse con Él allí. Ella fue al pozo a sacar agua, y en realidad recibió el Agua Viva. Ella recibió “agua que da vida”. Aunque no podemos ir al templo para la Misa, encontremos a Jesús en lugares inesperados. Sorprendentemente, un lu-gar tan inesperado puede ser nuestro propio hogar. ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que oramos en casa? ¿Antes de la comida, por ejemplo? Algunas casas ni siquiera tienen un artículo religioso como un crucifijo o una estatua de Jesús o la Santísi-ma Madre y San José. Hagamos que nuestros hogares se conviertan en capillas donde “la familia que reza unida perma-nece unida”.

Misa Virtual: un fenómeno. Muchos católicos en estos días faltan a la Misa. El domingo pasado, casi 8,000 espec-tadores vieron la Misa virtual en inglés, más de 7,000 espectadores vieron la Misa en vietnamita y casi 4,000 vieron la Misa en español en la página de Fa-cebook de nuestra parroquia. Incluso, algunas personas me comentaron que vieron tres Misas en un día. También escuché el hambre de recibir la Comu-nión, ya que la “Comunión espiritual” no es lo mismo. Yo les pregunto a uste-des: cuando termine esta pandemia y el templo se abra nuevamente, ¿asistirán a Misa con más frecuencia? Nadie sabe lo que tiene hasta que lo pierde.

Hiệu ứng đám đông. Trong thời điểm mà nạn dịch COVID-19 tiếp tục lan rộng, người ta khó tìm mua được các chai nước rửa tay khô và các loại khăn ướt khử trùng. Một hiện tượng làm ngạc nhiên nhiều người là ngay cả các cuộn giấy vệ sinh cũng trở nên khan hiếm, vì nhiều người đổ xô đi mua và tích trữ quá nhiều. Các chai nước rửa tay khô thì còn dễ hiểu, nhưng tại sao là giấy vệ sinh? Giải thích

hiện tượng này, các chuyên gia tâm lý nói đó là hệ quả của “hiệu ứng đám đông”. Trong siêu thị, kệ hàng giấy vệ sinh thường chiếm diện tích lớn. Và khi chúng ta đi trong một dãy hàng hóa chật kín bỗng nhiên thấy một khoảng trống rỗng, lập tức sẽ thu hút sự chú ý. Tiếp đó, khi trên các phương tiện truyền thông tràn ngập hình ảnh người dân đi mua sắm hàng hóa, chúng ta sẽ bị tâm lý đám đông chi phối. Một lời giải thích khác cho hiện tượng này, theo phó giáo sư Nitika Garg –nhà nghiên cứu hành vi người tiêu dùng tại Đại học New South Wales (Úc), là “hội chứng sợ bị bỏ lỡ” (FOMO). Đó là khi một người bỗng nhiên thấy hàng xóm, đồng nghiệp mua nhiều giấy vệ sinh thì vô hình trung họ sẽ xuất hiện suy nghĩ “hẳn nó phải có tác dụng, hoặc có vấn đề gì đó thì người ta mới mua”, và cũng theo chân đi mua về nhà. Trong giai đoạn “tự cách ly tại gia” mà Quận Hạt Santa Clara thông báo, ngoài việc đặt tín thác vào Chúa qua cầu nguyện, chúng ta hãy dùng “hiệu ứng đám đông” để giúp vơi đi sự lo lắng của xã hội và giúp nhau thực thi những việc bác ái. Chẳng hạn như việc làm của em bé trai 7 tuổi Jimmy-Dean Hudson, đang cư ngụ tại Southend, bên Anh Quốc. Em đã dùng tiền bỏ ống của mình đi mua các cuộn giấy vệ sinh và đi phân phát miễn phí cho những cụ cao niên trong khu phố em ở. Trong lúc có rất nhiều người đang căng thẳng giành giật nhau mua các vật dụng nhu yếu phẩm về tích trữ, thì em bé trai này lại biết san sẻ.

Tìm gặp Chúa Giêsu ở những nơi bất ngờ. Để ngăn ngừa nạn dịch bị lây lan, Giáo phận San Jose đã bắt đầu đình chỉ các Thánh Lễ từ ngày 14 tháng 3 năm 2020, cho đến khi có thông báo mới. Việc đình chỉ xảy ra trúng vào ngày Chúa Nhật Thứ Ba Mùa Chay, Năm A. Phúc Âm hôm đó kể cho chúng ta nghe cuộc gặp gỡ của người phụ nữ Samari với Chúa Giêsu ở bờ giếng. Bà ấy không nghĩ là sẽ gặp được Chúa ở đó. Bà đến giếng để lấy nước, nhưng cuối cùng lại nhận được Nước Hằng Sống. Bà nhận được “nước mang đến sự sống”. Dù trong những ngày này không thể đến nhà thờ tham dự Thánh Lễ, nhưng chúng ta hãy tìm gặp Chúa Giêsu ở những nơi bất ngờ. Cũng có thể nơi tưởng là quen thuộc nhưng lại là bất ngờ: đó chính là ngôi nhà của chúng ta. Lần chót mà chúng ta cầu nguyện ở nhà là khi nào? Chẳng hạn như cầu nguyện trước bữa ăn? Có nhiều nhà còn không có nổi một bức tượng Chúa Chịu Nạn hay bàn thờ nhỏ có ảnh tượng Chúa, Mẹ và Thánh Giuse. Hãy làm cho căn nhà nơi chúng ta cư ngụ trở thành những nhà nguyện nơi “gia đình nào cầu nguyện chung sẽ là gia đình mãi ở bên nhau.”

Xem Lễ trên mạng: một hiện tượng! Nhiều người Công Giáo trong những ngày này rất nhớ Thánh Lễ. Hôm Chúa Nhật vừa rồi, có gần 8,000 người xem Lễ tiếng Anh, hơn 7,000 người xem Lễ tiếng Việt, và gần 4,000 người xem Lễ tiếng Tây Ban Nha trên trang Facebook của giáo xứ, do cha Timothy, cha Pedro, cha Đạt và tôi dâng Lễ. Có nhiều người còn nói với tôi là họ xem đến ba Thánh Lễ trong ngày Chúa Nhật, nghe luôn ba bài giảng. Tôi cũng nghe người ta buồn phiền vì không được Rước Lễ, và việc “Rước Lễ Thiêng Liêng” không thoả mãn được cơn đói khát. Vậy khi nạn đại dịch qua đi và nhà thờ mở cửa trở lại, anh chị em có năng đến tham dự Thánh Lễ thường xuyên hơn không? Sự thường, người ta chỉ biết quý điều gì đó khi nó không còn.
