14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 6, 2014
Dear Parishioners, Thanks to everyone who took the time to welcome our newly ordained associate pastor, Fr. Tom Vordtriede to
Holy Infant. It’s been a real joy for me and for Fr. Anstoetter to welcome him into the rectory. I am confident that his priestly ministry will be a very positive gift to our community. Speaking of gifts to our community, as many of you know our school principal, Sr. Rosario Delaney is currently spending part of her summer vacation in Ireland. While Sr. Rosario is away, I offer a friendly reminder for everyone to mark your calendars and “Save the Date” as we prepare to celebrate her 50 years of dedicated service to Holy Infant School. The dates for the celebrations are on Sunday, September 28th at our 10:15 a.m. Mass followed by a reception in our Upper Cafeteria and again on Monday, September 29th with a 10:00 a.m. all school liturgy followed by a reception. Cardinal Timothy Dolan has graciously accepted the invitation to return to his home parish—Holy Infant—to celebrate the 10:00 a.m. all school liturgy on Monday in celebration of Sr. Rosario’s 50 years of faithful service. Everyone is most welcome to attend both of these special Masses and receptions. Please spread the word to family, neighbors and friends and plan on being a part of this historic celebration. There will be additional information in the future. Looking ahead to this coming Fall, the women and men of our Christ Renews His Parish Retreat Teams are extending the invitation to anyone who may be interested in attending one of our CRHP “Chirp” Retreats here at Holy Infant. You would probably be surprised to know just how many folks who had been away from the church have—through their participation in a Christ Renews His Parish weekend—either come back or come back strong to the practice of their faith. I know because I have talked to them personally and welcomed them back. So if you are one of those who have been hanging out at the edges and wondering why your faith doesn't bring you more energy or consolation, Christ Renews His Parish Retreat might just be what you are looking for. Who among us can say that they do not need spiritual renewal? Or who would not benefit by sharing in the faith lives of others? Christ Renews His Parish Retreat is simply ordinary men and women seeking a way to deepen their spiritual lives. I've not met anyone who has participated who has not in some way been touched by the real-life faith of the participants. The women’s retreat is scheduled for the weekend of September 20th and 21st. The men’s retreat will take place on October 18th and 19th.
There is additional information about these upcoming retreat weekends in the vestibule/lobby of church. I encourage you to prayerfully consider the possibility of attending. I have personally attended one of these retreats and found it to be a fantastic experience. God’s blessings to you and your families,

Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel that he is “meek and humble of heart.” Yet just a few lines before this, he says that he is equal to his Father, the almighty God. So how can the Son of God be both meek and mighty?
Jesus’ meekness meant doing the will of God completely. The challenge for us comes in his words “learn from me.” We must learn to do God’s will as completely as Jesus did.

When we think of being good stewards, we may think that God is asking too much of us when He calls us to generously share our time, talent and treasure. Remember we are not ‘owners’ of anything, we are merely ‘stewards’ of the gifts God has given us. He is asking that we give back a small portion of what He has given to us.

Why, we might ask the prophet Zechariah today, would God want to banish chariots and horses? The answer follows: because they are used to violate God’s reign of peace, along with the warrior’s bow. In the days of Zechariah, chariots and horses were high-priced items used only for war-making. They were the aircraft carriers and nuclear missiles of his day. And for his culture, which thought of any king as being a military leader first and foremost, a king riding on a lowly beast of burden to proclaim peace without horses, chariots, and bows would have set his listeners topsy-turvy. This lowly, beast-riding king of peace, we believe, was fulfilled in Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. In a world torn by military strife often generated by differing religious views, and even in our own lives and homes where we are often at “war” over the tiniest things, we would do well to stop and consider to what degree we are willing to be like that “king” whose way of gentleness and humility is the way for us to find rest for our weary souls.
