Rebecca Greaney Crowned LHS DYW 2013Rebecca Greaney won the competition and took the title ldquoDistin-guished Young Woman 2013rdquo She received Self Expression and Scho-lastic awards along with a talent award after sprucing up her Harry Pot-ter flute solo with a little magic Rebecca was granted $1500 for her title and she won a grand total of $1800 for all other awards combined The contest was a complete success and left doors open for our Distinguished Young Women The next step is a state competition for Rebecca to participate

Young Women 2013 This prestigious competition allowed the girls to com-pete in several different categories for the chance to win some awesome awards scholarship money and the title ldquoDistinguished Young Woman 2013rdquo

Morgan Farrell won second runner up She also received awards in the categories of Interview Self Expression and Talent Morgan was grant-ed $500 for her title as well as $100 for each of the smaller awards

Vicki Miley won first runner up She also received Interview Fitness and Scho-lastic awards as well as the Spirit award which is only given out to the one con-testant with the best ldquoDistinguished Young Woman Spiritrdquo Vicki was granted $1000 for her title plus $500 for the smaller awards and the spirit award combined

Congratulations to all of the contestants everyone was fabulous

Regional BoundOn a cool Monday morning our girls golf team prepared themselves for the test at hand the challenging sectional layout of Sandy Pines Golf Club The girls were more than ready After a pretty strong regular season the team had seen and conquered various tough courses in preparation for this very morning The girls definitely played their best With three of the four girls

shooting their best scores of the season they unfortunately came up a bit short as a team and placed 4th However the junior Jorden Zubay managed to play well and make the cut for regionals with a score of 84 Jorden will be competing on September 22 at the IHSAA Girls Golf Regional Congratulations to Jorden and the rest of the team for a good season

LHSMeet Ms GaribayThis year our new art teacher is Ms Garibay and many students who donrsquot have her in class are interested in getting to know her I sat down and asked her a few questions so the rest of the school can gain some insight into this new teacher at Lowell High School

Q A lot of students are curious about the new art teacher can you tell me a little something about yourselfA Irsquom from the region I went to Purdue in West Lafayette I have a little black pug named Oscar This is my first teaching job ever Irsquom a recent grad and I did my stu-dent teaching job here

Q I understand that teaching art can be very chal-lenging sometimes what made you decide to be an art teacherA I really had no idea what I wanted to be and it was my senior year and I had to pick what I wanted to be I looked at my classes that I was good at and Irsquod taken ceramics all four years of high school I couldnrsquot be a starving artist so I decided teaching it would be a good idea

TechTechnology in Mrs Bilskirsquos ClassAs everyone at LHS has received a new laptop this year there are many different ways we are using them throughout the school Mrs Bilskirsquos class in particular has their own unique programs for her class Her class have been using two websites in particular New-2-YouUnique and Vizzle These two sites offer great lesson plans and activities for students to use while they learn On each website every student has their own profile set with specific lessons and activities just for them The Health Careers and Peer Mentoring classes have also been helping Mrs Bilskirsquos class with these programs by helping complete lessons or playing games The Peer Mentor and Health Career classes have also helped Mrs Bilskirsquos class learn how to use and navigate around on the laptops Everyone has really seemed to enjoy using their new computers and learning with them too

Meet Becky (Holding) Hollander (1999)Hollander attended Purdue University in West Lafayette majoring in

Computer Technology and Organizational Leadership Supervision She currently lives in Carmel Indiana and works at Gateway Electron-ic Medical Management Systems a software company that specializes

in electronic health record systems for cardiologists She is one of two database administrators that support hundreds of doctor offices

and hospitals nationwide Her husband who she met at Purdue is a Mechanical Engineer at Rolls-Royce Hollander quilts crochets does

Taekwondo and plays flag football

Hollander fondly remembers her creative writing class at LHS and an opportunity that she had to job shadow though for very different

reasons ldquoMy creative class was with Mrs Magley the best teacher I ever had With the job shadowing I got lucky I thought that I wanted

to be a veterinarian I took a summer job with a vet clinic that LHS helped set up but I learned that I wasnrsquot meant for that field I would have wasted years in college on classes that did not count towards my computer science degree had it not been for

that opportunityrdquo

Hollander advises all students to take advantage of the technology that LHS offers ldquoEvery industry uses technology in one way or anotherrdquo

On getting a good education Hollander offers sound advice She says ldquoYou cannot put a price on the importance of a great education Go to college Earn a degree Everyone can earn a degree if they are motivated and determined The

degree will unlock future opportunities I would never be where I am without my education I believe education is so important that I am continuing my studies at

IUPUI earning my Masters of Science degree in Computer Science Knowledge is powerrdquo

Fine ArtsThe Songbirds of A328 During D lunch many students at LHS are hard at work in SRT For the kids of the Special Ed Department D lunch or ldquosuccess periodrdquo is a chance to participate in the art of music In years past the kids had their own period for music but due to the small number of kids in the department the class had to be cut Choir director Mrs Rick-aby approached SRT as an alternative but due to distraction and the numerous choir students in the SRT things didnrsquot go as planned This year how-ever the Special Ed Department has the opportu-nity to utilize ldquosuccess periodrdquo as a music class all to themselves During their music lesson the kids in the Special Ed Department learn the basics of mu-sic In addition to singing they are also learned in subjects of music history and various types of instruments Of these instruments their favorite is the Boomwhacker The Boomwhacker is a set of elongated pipes that are different pitches in mul-tiple ranges which enables the kids to play scales and simple songs As part of the instrumental unit the kids even got the chance to make their own in-struments last year Using tissue boxes and rubber bands they were able to make physical their own musical ideas As far as singing goes the Special Ed kids learn their songs by way of mimicking Mrs Rickaby sings them a song or a phrase and the kids repeat it back to her

ldquoIt is easier for the kids to understand the music when they hear it firstrdquo says Mrs Rickaby Singing has given these kids a wonderful opportunity to ex-press themselves and work on their communication skills Before their music class some of the kids struggled with communication and vocal skills thanks to the class they have been able to find their voice The Special Ed kids also participate in the choir concerts the soonest being October 9th for their fall concert The kids will be featuring a song or two about friendship as well as others For the Christmas concert look for the Special Ed kids to give a performance using their Boomwhacker

LHS ALUMNI CONNECTIONMeet Dustin Palmer (2007)

Palmer attended Washington University in St Louis where he majored in Political Science and American Culture Studies As he

was getting his degree he studied two terms at Oxford University in England He also took classes and did internships in Cuba and Fiji He currently works for the National Democratic Institute in Wash-

ington DC an organization that tries to spread democracy through-out the world In the near future Palmer hopes to continue working in international development where he meets inspiring people from

cultures around the world Palmer has become a serious bicyclist traveling 350 miles from Washington DC to Pittsburgh a few months

ago He has a goal of riding cross country in the next few years

I asked Palmer several questions about his time at Lowell

When asked about test scores Palmer said ldquoI had good test scores when I was in high school but the truth is you need to study for

those tests to get you where you want to be but once yoursquore there keep your legs churn-

ing in the things most important to

your personal growth and those that will

bring you the fondest memories Make lsquoem good because

you are who you becomerdquo

Palmer said ldquoMy friends from the

class of 2007 and I still marvel at how nurturing and reinforcing the camaraderies was at LHS We were supportive of each and it helped

to push us to achieve And I am more proud and grateful for my upbringing in Lowell everyday ldquo

Palmer has ample advice for LHS students and given his pedigree I think we should listen to him

On foreign language Palmer says ldquoI wish I would have taken more initiative in learning a foreign language Spanish still eludes me to this day Learning a language is not only highly valuable I really

believe it stretches your creative and critical thinking skillsrdquoOn the most important skills to learn in high school Palmer advis-es ldquoBone up on the skills that will take you farthest--rhetoric and

quantitative understanding But also read read read like your life depends on itrdquo

On technology Palmer says ldquoYou Miss LHS Freshman can enroll in college level courses online at places like Udacity or MR Uni-versity or iTunes U There hasnrsquot ever been a more exciting and

accessible time to learn so go for itrdquo

Pop CulturePop Culture Takes a Serious Hit Itrsquos a show thatrsquos impacted everyonersquos lives whether they liked it or not Irsquom sure that anyone thatrsquos watched MTV lately has seen the commercials You hear the sad songs playing or see random people utter memorable words from the show Thatrsquos right everyone Jersey Shore is coming to an end After 6 seasons MTV decided to cancel their still-popular show which has made history as the networkrsquos high-est rated show ever On September 6th MTV aired a Jersey Shore special entitled ldquoGym Tan Look Backrdquo This was an hour long presentation of new footage from the series and interviews with the cast as they look back on memorable moments from the past 5 seasons Although the show may be ending yoursquoll definitely still see some of the cast around The spin-off series Snooki and JWoww has been renewed for a second season In addition another spin-off The Pauly D Project has aired on MTV So if you havenrsquot gotten enough of the cast donrsquot worry you can still see some of them on a regular basis If yoursquove stuck through Seaside Heights Mi-ami and Italy you must be sad to see them go On the other hand Irsquom sure there are more than a few of you out there who are happy about the end With the final season placed in Seaside Heights there are sure to be just as many dysfunctional yet loving moments be-tween the cast as usual Be sure to tune in on October 4th to watch the beginning of the end of Jersey Shore In the words of the series finale commercial ldquoIt may be ending but itrsquoll never be overrdquo

Back to Storybrooke This Sunday at 700 pm be sure to tune into ABC 7 to catch the season premiere of Once Upon A Time The show which combines scenes from a fairy tale world with real life has been renewed to a second season due to high popularity Coming back to the show are Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin and Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan If you happened to miss the last episode heres a short recap When we last left Storybrooke the curse had been lifted miraculously by Emma the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming Everything seemed to be looking up Snow White and Prince Charming were reunited Henry Emmarsquos son had been saved and everybody had remembered who they really were But Rumplestiltskin was still up to some nefarious plot After stealing the True Love Potion that he had sent Emma to retrieve in a dangerous mission he preceded to pour the contents into the Wishing Well The last episode closes with a large purple cloud dispersing throughout the town Some of the clues pertaining to this season include new characters and big reveals Some characters seen in promos include Prince Phillip and Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) Mulan and Captain Hook (Peter Pan) The writers have men-tioned Henryrsquos father being revealed and the fates of Baelfire and Pinocchio Overall with the curse broken the storyline can go multiple ways The big thing is that the residents only remember who they were They did not immediately revert back Make sure to see for yourself what happens to Emma Henry Snow Charming and all the other residents of Storybrooke this Sunday Let the magic and mystery reel you in yoursquoll be glad you did

With the season three pre-miere just a few weeks ago The

Voice is already becoming one of televi-sionrsquos most watched shows this fall sea-son After some powerful blind auditions by competing hopefuls only the best of the best were chosen by judges Adam Levine Cee Lo Green Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton This seasonrsquos teams are dominated by powerful singers with inspiring backstories such as Joe Kirkland from Levinersquos team and Devyn DeLoera from Aguilerarsquos team This season features superstar team mentors Billie Joe Arm-strong Michael Bubleacute Mary J Blige and Rob Thomas to help contestants through the competition Changes such as new six-teen member teams and contestant ldquostealsrdquo have also been added to the show this fall to spice things up With battle rounds just around the corner this next installment of The Voice is promising to be a good one

Sports2012 Summer Olympics From July 27 to August 12 London hosted the thirtieth edition of the Summer Olympics with 204 countries competing This was the third time that London had hosted the Games having previously hosted them in 1908 and 1948 The opening ceremony was directed by Danny Boyle and featured a trip through pastoral England the Industrial Age and the birth of technology There were many appear-ances of notable British people including J K Rowling Kenneth Branagh Tim Berners-Lee and of course members of the royal family Throughout the many events there were many milestones in the form of records and firsts For those of you who didnrsquot catch any of the Olympic news herersquos a rundown of US triumphs With a total number of 104 medals and a record of 46 golds the US won victories in beach volleyball basketball swimming and more Michael Phelps in his third olympics won six more medals He now holds the record for most Olympic medals at 22 and the most gold medals at 18 Other Americans that dom-inated in the pool were Ryan Lochte Missy Franklin Allison Schmitt and Rebecca Soni In beach volleyball the US took home both the gold and silver medals in the womenrsquos competi-tion Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Tre-anor won the gold in a game against fellow Americans April Ross and Jennifer Kessy Also the menrsquos and womenrsquos basketball teams won golds keeping up the record of consecutive wins The womenrsquos artistic gymnastic team also took home some well deserved medals Nick-named the Fierce Five the group won the sec-ond gold medal in the team competition with Gabby Douglas winning the all-around gold Other countries experienced some monumental moments too China and Russia came behind the United States in total number of medals and the host country Great Britain pulled off 65 medals (29 being gold)

A few countries celebrated having an athlete on the medal stand for the first time Maryam Yusuf Jamal won a bronze in the womenrsquos 1500m run for Bahrain Guatemala

won their first medal with Eric Barrando taking second place in the menrsquos 20km walk Anthony Obame took

October BaseballOctober is upon us which means itrsquos time for the greatest sport ever invented to crown a new champion As of this writing it looks like Americarsquos team the Phighten Philadelphia Phillies will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2006 As we go to print only the Texas Rangers look like locks for the playoffs in the American League The Chicago White Sox are also poised to make good on an incredible season The Bal-timore Orioles and New York Yankees are tied for first place in the AL East while the Oakland Arsquos one of the most improbable playoff teams in baseball history currently own the wild card The National League is a bit more set as the Washington Nationals Atlanta Braves San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds have clinched playoff berths That leaves one spot left with the Cardinals and Dodgers holding the best chance at earning it and the Brewers Pirates and Phillies needing just about every-thing to break their way if they hope to play fall ball

Even with the uncertainty The Devilsrsquo Dispatch can safely make predictions because we understand that pitching defense and timely hitting will win out And thatrsquos why we can immediately tell you to discard the Rangers (lack of starting pitching) Orioles (lack of timely hitting) Nationals (lack of priorities ie shutting down their ace) Cardinals (lack of momentum) and Dodgers (lack of chemistry) We are also discarding the Atlanta Braves because we donrsquot like them That leaves the Yankees Arsquos and White Sox in the AL and the Giants and Reds in the NL All five of these teams are wonder-fully balanced We love the Yankees experience and hitting The Bronx Bombers are powerful 1 through 9 We canrsquot say enough about the pitching staffs in Oakland and on the Southside of Chica-go The Giants have experience plus theyrsquove looked good down the stretch And the Reds have played the best baseball for the long haul of 162 games

Freshman Academy Study TripOn Tuesday September 18 the Freshman class visited six colleges and universities Perdue Calumet IUN South Suburban College Ivy Tech Gary Ivy Tech Val-paraiso and Valparaiso University Tour guides showed students the campuses and classrooms gave them information about college life and let them know what courses and extracurricular activities are available Students were able to ask questions and get a feel for an actual college setting Many students struggle with the thought of finding the right college for themselves but this was an excellent opportunity for them to view some options that may help them decide where they would like to go After the visits the students enjoyed lunch before returning to school Not only did I have a great time but I know that a lot of other students did too

Remember all those problems that East Chica-go Central had when they rolled out their 11

initiative Stories of lap tops in Guatemala City the day after And remember all those parent complaints when they got hit with a

huge student rental fee in Munster when they passed out their lap tops And remember how

Lowell was going to be no better than East Chicago and Munster

Well how do you like us now

The Tri-Creek 11 initiative has gone about as seamless as possible with very few ma-

jor problems and we have an incredible tech department administration and teaching staff

to thank

Already Red Devils and their lap tops have become as linked as peanut butter and jelly

Already what would do at Lowell without our laptops Already student learning is on the

rise

Next up STAT The Student Technology Ad-visory Team who will sit on a panel and advise the technology department about student needs

If you want to have a voice you should talk with new Dean of Students Mr Becker who is

putting STAT together
