Visual journaling has existed throughout history as aprocess of reflective thinking, and as a record of imagemaking. Throughout history great thinkers recorded andreflected on their ideas using a variety of visual journalingtechniques. From Thomas Edison’s light bulb sketches toLeonardo DaVinci’s visual journals of flying machines toStephen Hawking’s space-time diagrams, this record ofimage making also served as a record of the thoughtprocess. Exploring the thought process through visualjournaling is essential in a world that is in continuouschange Da Vinci (1452-1519) carried a visual journalwith him at all times so that he could record ideas, impressions, and observations as they occurred. Hisjournals, of which seven thousand pages exist, containedobservations and thoughts of scholars he admired, personal financial records, letters, reflections on domesticproblems, philosophical musings and prophecies, plansfor inventions, and treatises on anatomy, botany, geology, flight, water, drawings and paintings.
The Regional Food Hub that we are trying to develop is anew concept that is popular in Washington, but we arecurrently caught between new ideas and old guidelines. InJuly we met with New Mexico USDA Director Terry Brun-ner. He is looking into options and programs to see if Hecan find a "fit" for our project. We have also been in con-tact with Senator Bingamen's office for assistance andsupport. It is with optimism that we move forward. Webelieve that the right property and funding will becomeavailable and that this community will soon have a co-opfood hub that will bring quality food to our area. We arealways open to new ideas and new volunteers. ContactRebecca Allina (505-495-9906).
The "village" of El Morro, including EMAAC (5%), AncientWay Cafe and RV Park (51%), Inscription Rock Trading(22%) and property owners Lou and Billie Gross (22%)collectively get our water from a well north of the Gallery. We have recently begun meeting to address issues thatimpact all of us. All operating businesses have installedmeters at our intake points, as the water is shared pro-portionately as shown above. We will ultimately install ameter at the well head, as a neighboring rancher is enti-tled to as much of the well production as the rest of uscombined. We share the cost of electricity for the pumpand have just worked with the NM Department of Trans-portation to replace a critical aging length of pipe whichruns under the part of NM 53 currently under construc-tion. The group now meets quarterly and Gerry Acker-man is EMAAC's representative on the Well Sharehold-ers group. This is just one of those arcane, but vital, complications of making the Gallery work, and an excel-lent example of our community's commitment to mutualcooperation. - HL

On August 20, Professor David J. Weber died at his summerhome in Timberlake. He was internationally acknowledged to
be one of our nation's most distinguished historians. David wrote more than 20 books. Among those of specialinterest to New Mexico enthusiasts were On the Edge of Empire, The Taos Hacienda of Los Martinez, TheMexican Frontier, 1821 to 1846, Trading in Santa Fe, and What Caused the Pueblo Revolt of 1680? Perhapshis finest achievement was The Spanish Frontier in North America which was selected by the New York Timesas a notable book of 1992 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. David was knighted by order of the King ofSpain and received Mexico's Order of the Aztec Eagle. David was talented, humble and humorous. Twoweeks before his death, he gave a talk at the Gallery on his latest book. Our sincere sympathies to David's
wife, Carol, and his family and friends. David will be sorely missed. - HL

From the Executive Director
Members and Friends,
It has been both stunning and heartening to witness the
efforts of so many people, representing a rainbow of intentions
and perspectives, boil down and focus energies into one
purpose here at the Old School Gallery: to meet challenges
with intelligence (and a sense of humor!) as we bring EMAAC
into its next evolution. The sheer number of volunteer hours
given willingly by our Docents, Board Members, and friends
within the community establishes, without a doubt, that
EMAAC is beloved and needed by our community- and that
we are all willing to do what is necessary to weather any
bumps that we may meet along the road. Special thanks to
everyone who helped us to inventory the Gallery (this has
changed my life- truly!), to Kirk Shoemaker- for covering all
the bases, to Jeff Alford for his Herculean efforts and tax
expertise, to Leslie Moosman- who coordinated an incredible
Summer Youth Arts Program, to Susan Haygood -who has
been cleaning up our records despite her shoulder injury, to
our fabulous artists- who color our community with such
beauty, to Maqui and Reed- who have been masterfully
juggling our programming for the Gallery (and for the larger
community as well!!), to Jerry and Susan Ackerman- who
quietly and efficiently hold everything together, and with a
smile! I could go on for pages, but I want to leave room for
Harriet.
Which brings me to Harry and Harriet. We all love them,
and will miss them terribly as they follow their bliss all the way
to Kansas City. To say “thank you” doesn’t really cover it,
does it? The blessings that you have showered upon this
community have rained long and deep, and will continue to
nurture abundance for many, many years.
My dear friends… may your journey be filled with love,
laughter, and beauty. -Genevieve
From the President
Dear Friends,It is with mixed emotions that Harry and I leave the El Morro
area and EMAAC. We have made so many good friends and hadso many good times (artistic and otherwise). We have learnedthat “We are all artists!” We have had the pleasure of working forand with the most unique and community-responsive organizationon the planet. EMAAC lives up to its mission by being diverse andby nurturing all members’ creativity.
Each member of the 2009-2010 Board has my respect for theirhard work and accomplishments. We made a wise decision to hireExecutive Director Genevieve Humenay, who, in her first threemonths, has faced and conquered many challenges with grace, courage and exceptional ability.
We take with us wonderful memories of performances, work-shops, exhibitions. We will certainly return over the years to visityou, our lifelong friends.
All best wishes,Harriet
