Scope and Methodology
1. Participating Companies
A total of 142 companies participated in this Survey including 92 small-sized companies, 20
medium-sized companies and 30 large-sized companies. Amongst them, 97 were local firms and 45
were multinational companies.
The companies were invited to participate in this Survey based upon the following criteria:
They are amongst the leaders in their particular business sectors.
They employ at least 100 full time employees in their establishment, with exceptions.
They maintain independent pay policies although a few companies may be linked in some
general groupings.
2.Employees Covered
This survey covers 28,375 employees (including 5,675 employees newly recruited during the period
between July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 in 34 job fields/occupations, and 838 fresh graduates of
various universities, polytechnics and technical institutes).
3.Datum Point
Pay adjustments made by participating companies between January 1, 2015 and July 1, 2015 are
captured in this Survey.
4. Data Collection
Each participating company was sent a questionnaire and, if necessary, assisted by the Research
Team in completing the questionnaire.
5. Data Analysis
Participating companies were requested to provide data on the "Structured / Targeted Entry Pay",
"Actual Entry Pay of New Recruits" and the "Actual Average Pay" of those positions which matched
the job descriptions as specified in the questionnaire.
The data were analysed to determine the following :
75th Percentile (75P)
25th Percentile (25P)
Median
Arithmetic Average
Weighted Average (for "Actual Average Pay" and "Actual Entry Pay of New Recruits" only)
Separate analyses were conducted by grouping the participating companies according to their size
(i.e., small, medium or large) and nature of their geographical operations (i.e., local or multinational).

Definitions
Structured / Targeted Entry Pay: The GUARANTEED ANNUAL PAY under the company’s
grading structure or of the company’s target for recruiting new employees (including guaranteed bonus
but excluding overtime, shift, other cash allowances and commission).
Actual Average Pay for Incumbents: The average of the actual GUARANTEED ANNUAL PAY of
all incumbents in a particular position as at July 1, 2015 (including guaranteed bonus but excluding
overtime, shift, other cash allowances and commission).
Actual Average Pay for New Recruits: The average of the actual GUARANTEED ENTRY PAY of
employees in a particular position recruited during July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015 (including
guaranteed bonus but excluding overtime, shift, other cash allowances and commission).
Actual Average Pay =
Total GUARANTEED ENTRY PAY of employees recruited during July 1, 2014and June 30, 2015
Total number of employees recruited during July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015
Number of Incumbents: Total number of employees in post (including both new recruits & existing
employees) in a particular position as at July 1, 2015.
Number of New Recruits: Total number of employees newly recruited during the period between July
1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 in a particular position.
75th Percentile (75P): The pay which lies between the highest 25% of all reported salaries and the
remainder. The information will not be provided where less than 10 companies supplied data.
25th Percentile (25P): The pay which lies between the lowest 25% of all reported salaries and the
remainder. The information will not be provided where less than 10 companies supplied data.
Median: The pay which lies in the middle of all reported pay such that 50% of reported pay is higher
than this and 50% are lower.
Arithmetic Average: The average pay of a position, calculated by adding the pay paid by each
company and then dividing the sum by the NUMBER OF COMPANIES reporting.
Weighted Average: The average pay of a position, weighted to take account of the different NUMBER
OF INCUMBENTS in each company.
