Welcome to June’s Bulletin
I would like to say sorry about the lateness of the last issue and with this issue.
Hope you all liked the jam packed one in April, think that was the biggest one I have done yet. So as
always I am asking for more reports on events, restorations or even some pictures you took at the
last rally you went to, it’s always interesting to see what people have been up to. But please send it to
me by the 24th
July for August’s edition with Alan’s E-Bulletin in between.
I was asked to help out with Spectator safety for the Plains with Matt and Rocky, it turned out to be a
great day, and I think I can safely say we all enjoyed ourselves.
This Monday just gone, I went and participated in my first real grass autotest (last time as a pca in
Marks Rep-mobile), I had a brilliant time, the tests were great and environment was really fun. My
first test I did wrong, but after that I eventually got used to the route and started taking seconds off
my times. I had a really good time, and loved the banter, I am looking forward to doing the next one..
After we have fixed my now leaking shocker!.
What was also nice to see was a really full entry and a field full of cars and Mr Little Russ Henstock
behind Matt’s Metro having a go and enjoying himself! He did such a god job and was putting me to
shame with his times at some points! Here’s a picture of them:
Well hope to see you out and about at future club events, until then please enjoy the read.

Plains Rally 2013
A Big THANK YOU to a very special team of People!
Well I guess you are all expecting to see a report from me on the Plains Rally and what a great time
the set up team had and who did what to who and what joke was played on who. Well I’m sorry but
not this year!
Instead I have to say a massive thank you to a team of fantastic people. As I’m sure many of you will
know by now an old complaint of mine flared up on the Wednesday evening before the Plains. On
Thursday, despite my best efforts at helping to set up after the first stage Graham packed me off
back to the Hotel whilst the rest of the team carried on setting up. When they arrived back at the pub
they quickly realised that my condition had got worse and knowing my history it was agreed that
medical intervention was needed. After a quick ‘briefing’ on what needs doing and where everything
was Tim and Caroline took me to Aberystwyth Hospital where I was admitted. The staff at the
hospital were absolutely fantastic and my treatment began. This was made easier with the
knowledge that I didn’t need to worry about anything, as I knew the team would get the job done.
This they did absolutely superbly and when I was discharged on the Friday afternoon I joined them
as quickly as I could to help finish off the remaining stages.
So a massive massive thank you to them all not only for a great job well done but also for the
concern they showed and the help they gave me knowing that I have a superb team supporting me.
Oh and also for ensuring that everyone knew exactly what was wrong with me and because it was
the anniversary of the Dam busters when my complaint started to clear up apparently from now on I
have to be referred to as Wing Commander ‘Bomber’ Timmins!!!!

Chairman’s Chat
Hi All following the last Chairman’s Chat (April 2013), ignoring the quick input to the newsletter in
May. Well, what has happened in the last two Months, we’ve had the Bulldog, sorry North Wales
Stages, which in fact didn’t happen; no disrespect to Wolverhampton & South Staffordshire Car Club
Ltd., not their fault, purely a case of our bad weather; but an event which caused us some concern in
respect of P.R.for the Plains, of which no doubt more later.
On Friday 19 April, we had the KDMC Committee night out; before anybody asks, this is a self-
financing event meant to integrate the Outgoing Committee Members, with their successors,
unfortunately due to timely circumstances, this event was not held last year, so this was a bit of a
“catch up”.
Then we have had that event, generally known as “THE PLAINS RALLY”; what do I say, no doubt
there will be other reports from “the team” further in this bulletin, suffice for me to say; from what I
saw (I had to take an early bath due to puncture after SS.2); and heard from those competitors that I
was able to speak to; another great event, well-staged by Graham and the team.

Following on directly from the Plains, our stalwart Radio Controller, Phil, conscripted some members
to turn out, yesterday, 26 May, to assist as Radio Operators on the inaugural running of Harlech
Motor Clubs, Toyota Harlech Stages, a single venue event held on Llanbedr Airfield located just
South of Harlech. There may be other reports, but a great day on a Very Good new venue, weather
helped, not sure what it would be like in bad weather.
Right Soapbox time: As I said in April, last year my “Push” was to try and get more members out
assisting on various events, events “out with” your own discipline; this worked with limited success,
and I would still ask you to consider; if you are yourself not competing on an event, then come out
and assist on another event, REMEMBER if you have no officials / marshals for your event, it will not
happen, so think of others.
This year my “Push” is to get more involvement in the running and organisation of the Club, we need
people to take over as “Secretary, Treasurer, Competition/Social Secretary; etc., etc..” these are jobs
that are on-going the current officials will at some time want/need to retire, but the job is on-going so
if you feel that you would like to take that job on PLEASE speak to the current occupant or any
committee member, you would be most welcome to “shadow” and pick up any hits / tips with a view
to taking over.
The same goes in respect of our “Event Organisational Teams”, the Plains Team and The Tour of
Cheshire Team, will have to be replaced at some time, not forgetting our other events. We need
people to show an interest in keeping these events alive, I as well as some of the current teams are
concerned that we as a Club are becoming a bit complacent – “Well so and so did it last year, so
he/she will do it again”, and there is no communication, no passing down of the post’s.
We need to be looking to the future, the existing Officers need Deputies / Assistants to work with /
shadow them, with a view with taking over in due course.
Finally, you will recall, that back in May last year, I reported on comments received regarding our
meeting place, this has not been forgotten. We are actively looking for a suitable alternative, location
must have a dedicated meeting room and a suitable Car Park for use on Scatters etc., we have one /
two suggestions which are being looked at, but if anybody has any suggestions please contact me, or
any other committee member.

Jef Sumner
Club Championships Update
Firstly, some date changes to let you know about
Road Rally Championship – the Kick Energy Derbyshire Rally (formerly the VK) which was postponed earlier in the year has been rescheduled to 6/7 July
Stage Rally Championship – the Neil Howard Stages moves back a week to 16 November Grass Championship – the Saturday event has been move to 10 August, subject to landowners

consent, and will hopefully be a Car Trial. The intention is that the Gymkhana will run on the Sunday of that weekend.
Now that is out of the way, let’s get on with the report!
In general May seems to have been a quite month on the competition front, as attention has been focussed on the Plains Rally – lots of marshals championship points, but not really too much else.
On that note we will start with the Marshals championship. Lots of points were scored on the Plains, and the championship is sharing up into tight battle between Andy Redhead and Russ Henstock, with Steve Henstock, Mike Timmins and Mark Adams all waiting in the wings.
In the Road Rally championship, Matthew Vokes finished 3rd on the 061 Altratech recently on the maps for Martin Self in the Proton. As Matthew had nominated this, he moves up to second in the championship behind Shon Gosling. David Dunlop retains the lead in the drivers section. Dave and Jennie Aincham retired their Mini on the Auto Mark Rally with alternator problems and so their nomination didn’t really trouble the scorers too much.
In the Historic Rally championship, Mike and Matthew Vokes continue to lead, although that may change on the forthcoming Hughes Rally in early June, particularly in the navigators section where Steve Skepper and Philip Vokes are within two points of the leader
There is still a triple tie at the top of the Off Road championship between Ben Smith, David Goodlad and Chris Happer although this may change as the off road season begins to kick in over the summer.
The first Grass Series event (an all forwards Autotest) was won by Dave Aincham, who leads the series from Russ Smith and David Dunlop. Remember this year we have broadened the scope of this to hopefully include a car Trial – we still need organisers though, as we run the risk of the series being curtailed.
There has been no change in the Scatter or Stage Rally championships - in which nobody has yet finished an event!!
Wrapping this all up into the Allrounders championship – I hold a slender lead of two points over Russ Smith with Mike Vokes in third. A number of other competitors are all hitting high points per event averages so when dropped scores start to come into play this one could go down to the wire.
That’s all for this month – see you at an event somewhere

Autotester on Top
Ian Chapman achieved a personal goal when he won the latest BTRDA Autotest Championship round. The CSMA event at Milton Keynes was closely fought. At halfway Ian was under a strong challenge from Roger Holder in the Nova. A clear run in the afternoon kept his closest challengers at bay and he took his first BTRDA FTD by 3.1 seconds. This was also the first win for the Sylva Riot, a rear engine kit car which Ian has been developing for the last 18 months. CONGRATULATIONS IAN. Several KDMC members had success on the event. Ian’s son Chris was 6

12 Car Rally – A Competitors View
The last bulletin contained several reports on the 12 car from marshals, who are obviously better
organised than the competitors as I’ve only just sat down to write mine now...!
Thanks to Russ, Richard and Mark for organising, knowing the amount of effort involved, it was a
shame there wasn’t a full entry for what turned out to be an excellent, well organised/marshalled
event which allowed us to go out and give the Imp (and my brain) a good thrashing! (Not to mention
scooping up some valuable KDMC points for the hotly contested Navigators/Drivers Championship...)
The Golden Pheasant was the usual starting pub of the rally where we were handed a minimalist
pack containing only one route handout, meaning the rest of the route would have to be plotted on
the go (a bit of a challenge compared to the last event we had done (ToC) where all the route was
pre plot!) After seeing all the marshals kitted up in many layers for the cold night, I was grateful of the
Imp’s radiator pipes running under my feet through the car making the nav’s seat a comfortably warm
spot.
KDMC Bulletin June 2013

The first section was a regularity, a good warm up before we had Handout 2 thrust through the
window at the start of Standard section 2 with a cheery wave from the marshal. What felt like a
blisteringly quick pace set by the route planners combined with some tricky gridlines and tulips meant
the section was pretty full on, a particularly difficult set of junctions rendered me (and I think many
other competitors) temporarily stuck, but after some serious thought the route was plotted and all that
remained was for Dad to “go go go!” We enjoyed a fast set of twisty roads in convoy with Sam/Steve
and Dave/Shon where many a pedals were pressed to the metal! (In the Imp’s case, just to make it
go up the hills)
The next standard section took us up over some excellent roads on the Derbyshire moors and
through Macc forest where dense patches of fog made being a passenger particularly hairy as Dad
was “hoofing” to keep up with the pace of the rally. Flat out in top gear down a dark, misty moorland
road was certainly a highlight of the evening before a craftily placed code board in a car park allowed
a learner driver past us just before Paul Kelly’s control which had both me and dad bouncing up and
down in frustration as we watched the clock tick us over into the next minute. (Dad says I should
assure everyone, however, we did nothing to bring the rally into disrepute!)
Following the fast paced action of the standard sections, the regularities felt a little tame, but kept the
navigators brains working with some awkward NAM junctions and plenty of IRTC’s which were all
manned. It was great to see some familiar faces out marshalling - Steve Henstock remarked that the
Imp smelled nicely of “oil and hot mud” as we left his control; Laura and Russ coped excellently with
my stress trying to calculate due times coming unexpectedly into their control; Scrutineer Dave
Walters was out with his journalistic notepad taking down ideas for his post rally report (depending on
how nice you were to him at his control...!). All the marshals we encountered seemed in excellent
spirits considering the conditions.
The finish location was the glamorous Lymm Services just off Junction 20 of the M6 where the only
spectator was a dozing lorry driver and the attendant charging extortionate prices for cups of Hot
chocolate, so we decided to occupy ourselves instead with trading stories of the evening with fellow
competitors and marshals such as the account of Mark and Stewart reversing into a gatepost whilst
trying to turn around in a narrow gateway... Once again David’s journalistic notepad was out so
everyone was on best behaviour for the results “ceremony” (which incidentally was postponed so
Richard and Russ could go home for a well earned nap before attempting to work out the where
everyone had finished).
From the tales I heard, most people had an enjoyable (and very eventful) evening, I’d just like to say
another big thanks to Richard, Russ and Mark for all the effort they put in and also to the Marshals for
standing in the cold all evening and still being so cheerful; such was the pace for the evening, I fell
asleep on the way home, hard work this rallying!

Old Stager in the South
It seems a long time since the Tour of Cheshire and the last time I was in Knutsford, so time for an
epistle. I competed on my first rally in 1960 in a Ford 1172 side valve engine special in Surrey and
am beginning to wonder if there are others around still competing 53 years after their first. Willy

Cave and Arthur Senior spring to mind but they are not regulars. With Rich Harrison in the MGB I am
contesting the HRCR Clubmans Championship again but we have not got off to a very spectacular
start. We were unable to do Round 1 as it was the Tour of Cheshire and I was Chief Marshal and
Rich Entries Secretary, which gave our class rivals a good start. Our first was the Ilkley Jubilee in
April, a well established and excellent rally based in Skipton. We met Steve Skepper and John Larkin
at our digs after all the usual formalities and had our now customary drinks and meal at The Elm in
Embsay . Next morning off to the start with 3 tests in the Cattle Market and off on the first of the
regularities. The day went quite well though we felt a bit rusty not having rallied for 5 months since
the 2012 Rally of the Tests. We came 21st overall in a full field of 70 cars but were not in the hunt for
a class award this year. There are 2 new competitors in our class, a 2.7 Porsche 911 and a Triumph
Dolomite Sprint, both more powerful on the tests and unfortunately well navigated on the regularities.
However it had been a good day and it had been good to meet old friends and KDMC colleagues
Steve and Shon.
The next round was the North Yorkshire Classic on which we had won our class last year and been
Best on Regularities, but this year we had to give it a miss as Jackie and I were in Australia and Rich
had a prior engagement too. In Australia we had a few days in Melbourne having flown via Malaysia
Airlines in their big new Airbus A 380, a very impressive flight in this giant of the skies. We then flew
to Hobart in Tasmania and hired a car (Hyundai i20 Auto) to drive around the island. A flight care of
Virgin Australia in a Boeing 737 back to Melbourne for another rental car (Hyundai i30 Auto) and a
drive along good empty roads through Victoria State and the Goldfields and Ned Kelly country and
into the Australian Alps and the Snowy River area. We saw plenty of wildlife in the form of kangaroos
and koalas in the bush and gum trees and the impressive hydro electric and irrigation works of that
area. On then to Canberra and into the Blue Mountains before our final drive into Sydney for the last
few days. It was a great trip done on the cheap, staying in roadside motels for the most part, all of
which were good value. Fuel is cheap there but food prices are high, but I have always been
fascinated by the continent and would like to go a third time. A few years back we went from Adelaide
up through the deserts to Alice Springs, Uluru and on to Darwin via Kakadu before moving on to
Perth, another great trip.
Back in England it was time for the next event, this time as C of C of a 12 car Regularity rally for my
new club here in Kent. They run a series of 7 rounds in a championship on Sunday mornings. Even a
12 Car takes a fair bit of organising what with route finding, start and finish venues, organising
marshals, producing roadbooks and timecards and sorting the precise to the second timing that
daytime regularities require. It all ran well on a beautiful sunny day when all the bluebells and
primroses were out, a bonus for those who had time to look at them. Rich and I were then entered in
the 4th round of the championship, the Leukaemia Classic in South Wales. My first effort on this event
was driving my Saab 96 with a very young Graham Raeburn navigating us to a 2nd
in Class award.
Last year Rich and I also got 2nd
in class, so what about this year? The rally consisted of 14 tests
and 7 regularities plus a Jogularity section near the end on private land, always exciting since
controls can come up thick and fast and the time schedule is impossible. The start area was the local
council offices where we signed on Friday evening after a trouble free scrutineering. After a meal
and drinks in the local Premier Inn with Martin Neal and Richard Dix, last year’s winners, we were as
ready as we would ever be for the start next day. Things did not go entirely according to plan. One of
the tests on a big council car park was so complex that half the field got a wrong test, including us.
Then we had a puncture and lost time changing it only to be seriously baulked on the next regularity
by a gent who insisted on reversing about 300 yards up a very narrow road at snails pace – another
3 minutes gone. After the lunch halt things were going well until Test 11 on the remains of the giant
Llanwern Steelworks near Newport. This was like rallying on the moon, all loose black shale and

PRINTER CARTRIDGES I have just sent a large box of cartridges to the Wales Air Ambulance (so there is now room in my garage for the next boxful). All makes and sizes are collected so if, at your place of work, they are not re-cycling them then please ask if we can have them. I hope I never need the services of any of the Air Ambulances but I know there is a possibility and so I personally think that collecting old ink & printer cartridges is a small price to pay for something that could save my life – I hope you would agree with this and so please start collecting your old cartridges and pass to me.

coarse gravel with the required route negotiating tracks between great heaps of rubble. After one
particularly rough bit the exhaust came apart making conversation in the MG quite a challenge. On
with the exhaust at the end of the test and off to a regularity and a test on a nice smooth car park.
Then back to the steelworks for a jogularity covering two laps of a very rough route. Sadly in the heat
of battle we went the wrong side of a small pile of stones and were given a wrong direction on the
first lap. On the second lap off comes the exhaust again to be fettled at the end of the section. Just
one more regularity to go and a final smooth test back at the finish. One more exhaust parting and a
final trouble free run and test to finish, where Rich sorted the exhaust properly for the run home the
next day. We knew we were running 16th at lunch but the WD and other troubles dropped us to 24
th
after what had been a tough event. Shon did well with 9th place in David Mustarde’s Alfa and the
event was won by Tour of Cheshire winners Matt Warren and Cath Woodman.
Next up for us is The Hughes Rally down here in Kent followed by the East Anglian a couple of
weeks later. Rich has the job of checking the MGB after a punishing weekend and meanwhile I have
to sort an annoying electrical fault on the VW Beetle. The dip switch and headlamp flasher, on the
indicator stalk as usual, suddenly stopped working so I remain on dip. As far as I can see the Relay is
OK and the switch is new and the lights up front all work main and dip beams. I have spent a fair bit
of time already trying to trace the fault. Has anyone any ideas? I look forward to the next bulletin
after a truly bumper edition last time – it is good to keep in touch with KDMC in addition to the
frequent meetings I have with the historic rallying members.

North Yorkshire Classic Rally
Mike & Matthew Vokes – 1966 Hillman Imp 998cc
Several crews from KDMC and HRCR North West ventured into Yorkshire for the fourth running of
this event by the regulars at York MC, and which this year moved further North onto OS Map 100 and
the depths of the North Yorkshire moors. From the new start venue of the Fairfield Mercure just north
of the York ring road, there were 12 tests and 5 regularities.
Tests were either airfield or farmyard type and more open than previously – venues included
Tholthorpe and Duncombe Park outside Helmsley (for 6 tests in total)– the latter previously used as
a stage on the RAC Rally.
Dust was definitely not the problem this year, the temperatures were very cold all day and there was
mud, snow and ice evident for much of the day; the roads used on the regularities were very narrow
and frequently looked more like whites. Marshalling was not an enviable task, most were wrapped up
like Eskimos. As usual despite the conditions they were invariably cheerful and efficient.
There was the York MC signature touch on the third regularity where the plot n bash navigation was
handed out at each of the ITC’s – so you only had enough of the route to find the next control.
Sounds daunting but the plotting isn’t cryptic and it works well – keeps the navigators on their toes!
The sting in the tail this year though was the final plot n bash regularity where the navigation was
specified by passing the entrances to farms or named houses. These farms were usually on long
drives, but the ‘Old Rectory’ was by the side of a yellow (100/597721). Look carefully though and the
entrance is on the loop passing through SH89. Inevitably there was a control on the loop and this
caught out around 25 crews, with a consequent massive 30 minute penalty (the organisers later
admitted it had been the intention to modify the penalty for missing a control to maximum 5 minutes
in the final instructions but had forgotten to do this….).
As a result, we’d been running there or there abouts in the top 10 for most of the day but found at the
finish that we had inherited the lead as all the crews ahead of us had either missed the control
completely or realised their mistake and dropped serious time - cue very surprised winners! We’ve
always had a good run on this rally, and won it in 2010 owing to some ‘dubious’ code boards….. It
also seems that the more car problems we have then the better the result – this time the car threw a
fan belt in Duncombe Park (probably didn’t like the 7500rpm on the mud…) which lost the alternator
and water pump – the engine had boiled by the time we stopped; as most may know this is not a
good thing at all in an Imp(!!), but the head gasket / Wills rings seems to be OK. From the start we
also had a grumbly wheel bearing which was seriously grouchy by the finish – subsequent
dismantling showed it to have broken up and was probably close to the point of seizing.
Matthew collected a total regularity penalty of 39 seconds for the whole rally – not quite sure how he
manages to do it, but as some are aware there is a challenge to his seat in the Imp coming from his
younger brother – this performance lays down the gauntlet!
Roger Jenkins and Chris Sheridan in the MGB also picked up a well deserved 2nd
overall and first
novice (surely can’t be a novice for much longer now Roger!) – they were on the pace all day and
found the Old Rectory control. Unusually , but to much applause Roger remained at the prize giving
to collect his award (a task normally delegated to Shon!).

Duncan Wild / Steve Skepper in the Austin MiniCooper S finished 20th after the Old Rectory dropped
them from what would potentially have been a podium spot. A very quick time through the slippery
Kilburn farmyard test obviously played to Duncan’s autotesting skills.
Shon Gosling was out with David Mustarde in the Alfa 1750 GTV and picked up 7th overall and 2
nd in
class, couple of test code board penalties probably tell a story!
Thanks and credit go to the organisers for running the event in difficult circumstances – one of the
regularities that was intended to go up Sutton Bank and down through the long Caydale Ford was
hastily re-routed the night before the event – perhaps a wise precaution as there were issues on the
previous night’s Ryemoor road rally which used some similar roads, but not something to be
undertaken lightly with timed ITC’s to re-calculate!

Plains Rally 2013 ----- Did you really expect me to keep quiet!
Well the Plains Rally 2013 has taken place and it’s time to look back and see how it went. This year
proved to be more challenging than previous years. As more and more people are tightening the
purse strings it was harder to get marshals and timing crews to commit to help out and 36 hours
before I was due to go down to Welshpool I was still searching for an Arrival time control crew, A start
Crew and a Flying Finish / stop line crew. A few frantic e mails to over 70 clubs and with tentative
promises of help I set off down to Welshpool with Simon Barnett.
As soon as we got onto the M56 we came across the first problem, a queue of traffic. As we edged
nearer the front of it the reason soon became apparent. There causing all the queues was a
Landrover 90 slowly pottering along the inside lane. As I drew up along side it I noticed our very own
Safety officer, Phil Mostyn, was driving it,
Anyway we eventually arrived and went and set up a PR sensitive area to ensure that spectators etc
did not disturb one of the local residents on the day. We then retired to the Red Lion and awaited the
arrival of the rest of the team. Next morning as we gathered for breakfast the team noticed that I was
even quieter and more reserved than normal and in fact was rather poorly which had nothing to do
with the ale drank the night before! The usual diagnostics took place and medical advice issued and
off we set to the forests.
This year we were slightly down on numbers but with the help of Phil Mostyn and our C of C, Graham
Raeburn and his special light weight hammer, stakes were soon being knocked into the ground, vans
reversed into ditches and tow ropes got out. Now came the next challenge…. All junctions now have
to be set up as box junctions and it soon became apparent that this was going to take a lot more
time. Eventually the first stage was finished and this is where my story has to take an interlude, as I
don’t know what happened next! All I can say is that the best set up team in motor sport got on with
the job in hand and did an absolutely fantastic job and got the job done!
However I have been told a few snippets that I feel I should share with you. The first concerns our
much-loved chairman Jef Sumner. As you are no doubt aware Jef has been ‘promoted ‘ to deputy
regional organiser for the WRGB. To recognise this honour we felt that it was only right he should
receive a title for his new role and as with MPs when they move up to the upper house he was
dubbed ‘Lord Sumner of Gartheiniog’. The locals soon caught onto this and when he arrived back at
the Red Lion on Thursday evening a sign had been place on his bedroom door!

The only other snippet I received was that on the Friday morning, Steve Henstock arrived to join us .
Now as you all know Steve is an experience member of the club, A fully qualified and well respected
motor mechanic and it’s fair to say a good safe driver. However I believe that when he arrived on
stage he parked his disco on a slight hill, got out to help set up and watched as his car rolled down
the hill into a ditch! Yes he forgot to apply his hand brake! Andy Red soon had the tow rope out and
rescued him and set up started again.
Mean while back at the hospital, after seeing the surgical specialist my treatment began and I was
soon firing on all four cylinders, dug a tunnel and escaped back to the forests. I rejoined the team
and jumped into Phil’s land rover to discover he broken it! After a few ooohss and mmms
accompanied by some sharp intakes of breath and tuts from Andy and Steve it was decided that it
was best not to use it the next day. So a quick rethink and Jef was designated as my driver whilst
Phil jumped in with Dr Ed. On Saturday as we arrived at Stage 1 and it became apparent that the
stage commanders had been briefed on my situation! After a quick round of mickey taking, as well as
some genuine concerns we set off. Arrival at Stage 2 was met with a similar response as ‘Bomber ‘
Timmins was seen. We went through the stage and arrived at the stop line of Dyfi to the now normal
and traditional scene off Mark Adams devouring a bacon and egg butty! Off we went to Auxiliary
service and Jef declared he needed a pit stop …..for fuel. We duly stopped at the petrol station, Jef
counted his pennies and put some petrol in, paid and came out to a flat tyre! Plan C … I jumped,
well squeezed into the back of Dr Ed’s disco and the rest of the day went without incident but the now
familiar greetings at every stage!
All to soon the stages were finished and the vans started clearing up. This was done quickly and by
7.30pm all the crew were back in Welshpool. I have to say a big thank you to all the marshals / radio
crews for who stripped down their junctions, to Matt Thompson who jumped in one of the equipment
vans and helped clear up and of course another massive thank you to my team ! They are a great set
of people and a pleasure to work along side. Yes we take the mickey out of each other but at the end
of the day we have the utmost respect for each other and know that when it comes down to the
crunch we can rely on each other to get the job done!
Thanks Team
Wing Commander ‘bomber’ Timmins.
Hughes Rally This year the Hughes Rally moved East to Ashford in Kent. It provided access to some new venues, including an army camp near to Peter Boyce’s new home outside Folkestone. Peter was navigating for Rich Harrison, Duncan Wild took the Mini Cooper to Kent this year with regular navigator Steve Skepper. Shon Gosling was navigating for Dave Mustarde in the Alfa. The route was excellent along beautiful Kent roads. Most of the morning was on Romney Marsh, the afternoon further North. The tests were good fun. Not too tight with some fast open tests which suited the Porches. We did our best to keep them in sight and made up time on the tighter farm and brick yard tests.

Regularity C was our undoing. It was a plot and bash regularity with seven IRTCs and four code boards. At each TC we were given information for the next section. I’ve never seen Steve juggling so much paper as he plotted the route, gave me directions, checked out timing, wrote down code boards – and waved to the many locals along the route. Twice I got to the point where Steve had got to with his plotting. In all this we missed a speed change and went through four controls at the wrong average speed. The resulting penalties cost us about five places – but that’s rallying. It was an excellent day in warm sunshine. Results of KDMC members; 6

Our Plains Rally
Well after much deliberation we ( as in myself, rocky and matt) decided not to go in my little polo after
hearing about the lack of road at the stage we were marshalling at.. Instead we went in the mighty
Volvo.
We arrived on Friday afternoon, after having a tour of Welshpool’s lovely one way system 3 times...
and we eventually found the main car park, well we couldn’t really miss it with the amount of rallies
cars parked up.
We found a suitable parking space and started to head towards the royal oak where we had
promised Chris Kettle we would help at signing on... however Alan Smiths fine ears heard the
unmissable note of the Volvo and came to seek us out.
“ Hi, Have you lot got anything to do?”... “we are supposed to be helping at signing on, but are not
sure what time they need us yet... how come?” “ Well I need some help, I need someone to go down
to the trailer park and direct the trailers and hand the teams their numbers... we currently have a local
doing the job and he has been helping all afternoon so could you possibly go down and help”... well I
think we must have a soft spot for Alan and i think he knows this by now... so of course we would go
and help. Now to head to the HQ and let Chris know that we are needed elsewhere and if it ties in
with his plans. Chris was more than happy for us to help at the trailer park; he had his signing on
team working perfectly in time, so there was no big ques as he anticipated.
So we started to head to this trailer park which was at Powis Castle, and was only a mile or two down
the road, so we started on our journey to the unknown... after walking past some houses, we found a
field at the end of them, from a distance we thought we saw a footpath sign so headed over on the
grass, assuming it was a path to the road running alongside us... well it turned out to be just a sign
and not a footpath sign!. We were greeted with a midsized metal fencing and lots of brambles and
thorns on the other... well as you may or may not know, Matt is quite tall and well me and Rocky are
a bit vertically challenged... the fence Matt could easily put his leg over, where as with me and Rocky,
it was a bit of a climb...
KDMC Bulletin June 2013
16
Well we convinced Matt that we were not heading into the brambles, there must be a less thorny bit
somewhere. Well we found a less thorny bit, but now, with the metal fence, it had some makeshift
wooden pointy fence with some chicken wire... so not only did we have to struggle getting over the
fence we also had a slight chance of getting impaled now.... Matt hopped over in his usual style,
Rocky was doing our bit for the girls and managing with some good guidance to get over.. Well me
on the other hand managed to sit on the first fence, then try and find a safe place for my foot to semi
rest on and stop myself from wobbling around... I eventually made it over to the other side in the most
un-lady like way, but at least we were on the right tracks now.
The triple fencing
We arrived at the field and spoke to Dave Dunlop who was doing sound, he took us over to the locals
and told us what we needed to do, it sounded straight forward so we were left to it, a few cars in and
it was going fine, some of the drivers didn’t listen and nearly drove into sound control a few times,
others just went up the hill at different areas, so between us we thought of slight tweaks that could be
done for next year if the trailer park is in the same location.
Hours went by and we realised that we were supposed to relive Don Barrow at 7 and it had turned
half six, so a few words between us, we decided to send Matt to go and get the car and explain we
were still helping out and if they did need us at signing on..
Short while after that Matt turned up and we started to head back to HQ, we arrived back at the car
park.. Where another Smith found us... it was starting to feel a bit like The Matrix with all these
Smiths!. This time it was Russ, with his big sad eyes looking very sorry for himself...” Hey so what
you all doing tomorrow”..” we are helping marshal/ spectator safety at Garth”... “hmm do they need all
three of you?”... “Well I am not sure will have to check with Ste H, why what’s up”...” well my service
van driver is unable to make it down to help me tomorrow.. He has a bad back, so I am looking for a
replacement”.. Matt ears soon pricked up and he was very keen to know more information... butter in
Russ’s hand he was more than willing to help out and was excited to drive the van, the only downside
was that he would probably have to sleep in the van.. Which left the dilemma of me and Rocky
possibly sharing a double bed... well that would get ‘our’ set up team talking!.
We decided to head back to HQ and get it Okayed by Ste H before we promised anything else... the
Smiths seem to have a way of making you want to help don’t they.
KDMC Bulletin June 2013
17
Unfortunately for Matt he was unable to help Russ, for we needed at least 3 at our Marshal point, so
we left Russ to it and decided to head back to our digs for the night at the Red Lion. We were greeted
with big smiles, and had great chats about our very own club celebrities as in the ‘Set up Team’ in
particularly Mike T and Jef S. They soon told us about the recent events and Mikes Hospital trip... I
am sure you will hear more about that elsewhere.
We got shown to our rooms, and we noticed the dedicated Lord Sumner room, where Matt and
Rocky would be staying for the night... the landlord told us Jef always asks for this room, so I was
intrigued to know what was so special about it... well upon entry it had its very own bathroom, and
then I saw it... the Princess and the Pea bed!! Well I was in fits of giggles whilst I saw Rocky standing
next to it weighing it up.. I think a step ladder may have helped!
Not long after we heard some noisy neighbours making their way up the stairs.. Who could it be, well
it was Mike and little Russ, we had a little chat and we found out more gossip about the day’s events
and how they had managed to set it all up, with one man down. They returned back to the pub
downstairs to carry on with their banter.
Morning came and we went down to collect our packed lunches, had a brief chat about where we
were heading to with Ste and set off on our trip to the stage.
We arrived and was searching for the Welsh Air Ambulance lady to give her the programmes and
tickets to sell, well no sign of them at the bottom of the track so we decided to drive up and find her...
after some very careful driving we reached the top, and gave her the box and had a chat and we
needed to head to our marshal point. Only problem was, the dirt road wasn’t wide enough for us to
turn around with all the double parking, so Matt with his years experience in driving, reversed all the
way back down the hill, whilst me and Rocky convinced other people in cars to move aside and let us
through. We eventually arrived at the bottom and didn’t have much time to get to our point.. The next
corner and another dirt track that was the route to our point, Ste did mention it was a bad white.. Well
he wasn’t wrong, after some more extremely careful driving Matt managed to get us very close to the
point. We jumped out and got into position before Russ (car 0) arrived. That was the start of it all,
was a great place to Marshal and spectate, the views were lovely and the weather was kind to us but
i didn’t expect the noise! Well it was my first experience in a forest and people always said it was a
good place to be; well i was thrilled to hear the noises bouncing back of the trees!! I am definitely
aiming to help out in a forest again.
The first part soon ended after a couple of hours, so we had a chance to chat to our Radio car and
get some food down us, whilst repairing a few stakes here and there. More spectators came just in
KDMC Bulletin June 2013
18
time for it to all start again, this time the cars were faster now they knew what they had to contend
with, not long after the big boys turned up and decided to squish as many stakes as they could, so
our safety tape barrier kept on coming in more and more, even the radio man reversed his car in.
That was it, the closing car came, and then we helped to pull the stage down and headed back to HQ
where we met up with some familiar faces, talked about how the rally went for us all, and we were
shocked to hear that Russ made it through without any problems for a second year running.. Wish we
made a little banner for him now saying well done!. A couple of drinks later and after watching the
trophy presentation we decided to head back home.
The whole event was great to be a part of again and we will probably be back out again next year..
maybe help out with the set up team.. Who knows? All i can say is that it is definitely worth the trip
and that it was great fun yet again!

Plains Thank You
On behalf of everyone on the Plains organising team, can I please thank all the club members that came out and helped this year. Mike Timmins reports that about 40% of the membership were out helping, which is great to see. Congratulations too to the club members who took part on the event, Alex Allingham in particular was involved in one of the closest battles of the day, just being pipped to the GpN win. The day went very successfully and was enjoyed by the competitors, a great credit to the many members of the club that helped out on the day and in the build up to the event. Already plans are being hatched for improvements in 2014 and beyond, the date for next year’s diary is Saturday 17th May 2014.

Allingham Pipped at Post on Plains
Stalybridge rally driver Alex Allingham and Cumbrian co-driver Chris Williams continued their run of
excellent recent form with a convincing 8th overall and 2
nd in Class N4 on last weekends SJR Plains
Rally, only the second outing for the pairing after an exciting and titanic rally long scrap for Group N
honours with rivals Tom Naughton and Mark Glennester. The event, based in Welshpool covered 45
miles of some of Mid Wales toughest stages in the forests of Gartheiniog, Dyfi, Sweetlamb and
Hafren and made up the third round of the MSA Welsh Rally Championship.
KDMC Bulletin June 2013
23
After Allingham and Williams took victory in style on March’s Mid Wales Stages on their debut outing,
they were keen for a strong repeat performance to back up that result and continue their Welsh
Championship assault in their Riverside Property Services sponsored ex Prodrive Subaru Impreza
N10.
The event started with a tough opening test, the fast eleven miles of Gartheiniog greeted crews with
changeable road conditions varying from wide dry gravel to wet and slippy mud, however the Kumho
Tyres were more than up to the job and the crew set second fastest time only 4 seconds behind the
Group N leader. Dyfi was to be the second stage of the day and this time Allingham and Williams
pushed hard, surviving two moments and a near miss with a log in the road, again setting second
fastest time but this time only a second shy of the leader meaning they headed for their first Auxiliary
Service just 5 seconds shy of the N4 lead and lying a respectable 9th overall.
That 5 second gap between second placed Allingham/Williams and pace setters Tom Naughton/Mark
Glennester (Evo 9) was as big as the margin would get all day, as both crews set exactly the same
time through the 5 miles of Hafren South before the only major service halt of the day. It was at
Service that the battle lines were drawn, with the rest of the Group N contenders now nearly 40
seconds in arrears the scene was set for a titanic scrap for the Group N honours during the afternoon
loop of three stages. The opening stage of the afternoon was the Sweetlamb Hafren stage that
Allingham and Williams had taken the lead of the Mid Wales Stages on just 10 weeks earlier and
another almighty push saw them set their first fastest time of the day and slashing Naughton’s lead to
a mere 1 second.
A repeat of the mornings 11 mile Garthienog test was next and the fifth stage of the day would prove
decisive. Knowing that the final 1 mile spectator friendly Woodyard stage would give them little time
to gain any advantage over their rivals after Gartheiniog Allingham and Williams set off into the stage
with an all or nothing approach and emerged from the test setting a time of 10 minutes and 23
seconds, the fastest ever time Allingham has set for the stage, however Naughton and Glennester’s
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 would set a time of just one second faster than that of Allingham’s meaning
the battle for Group N honours went down to the wire at the Woodyard with now just two seconds
separating them.
KDMC Bulletin June 2013
24
In a last ditch attempt to gain the 2 seconds needed to take victory the Richard Allingham Cars
backed crew took everything spare and classed as excess weight out of the car again setting off into
the 1 mile spectator stage with an all or nothing approach, gaining the spectators approval by being
the highest and most spectacular over the jump, however the stage wasn’t quite long enough for
them to sneak victory stopping the clocks on exactly the same time as their rivals meaning they had
to settle for 8th overall and 2
nd in Class N4 as well as taking away 4
th amongst the registered MSA
Welsh Championship contenders.
At the finish in the centre of Welshpool, 29 year old Allingham said, ‘ We’re very happy with today’s
performance and result, it’s been a great battle but of course it’s disappointing to miss out on winning
Group N by such a small margin. We survived a couple of near misses this morning but after
Sweetlamb we knew we had to keep pushing as hard as we could and pile as much pressure onto
Tom as possible in the hope he made a mistake. Unfortunately for us he didn’t. We knew coming into
today that we had to be at 100% all day and at times we were at 110%. Neither Tom nor I have ever
set a faster time in Garthienog before today so that just shows how hard both of us were pushing and
what sort of pace we’re on. Looking at those ahead of us, the top 6 places were filled with World
Rally Cars or B13 specification cars and we’ve only missed out by 2 seconds on being the best of the
rest. 8th overall and 2
nd in class is still a great result for us in what is now a ten year old Group N car.
Chris has been faultless on the notes all day so a huge thank you to him and the Kumho Tyres have
worked perfectly in the mixed stage conditions we’ve faced today which has helped greatly.’
23 year old Williams from Barrow added, ‘It’s been another fantastic day’s rallying. It’s been a while
since I’ve been in a dog fight like that one today and it makes it even more exciting. We found a good
rhythm straight away this morning and never looked back. We again worked hard on our pacenotes
all week and it’s certainly paid off. When I started to compete in rallying in 2006 I could only dream of
finishing in the top 10 of a BTRDA event and now I’ve achieved it, this is possibly one of the best
results of my career. To have won on our first outing and then claim 8th today on our second….. it’s
been a dream start to Alex and I’s partnership.’
KDMC Bulletin June 2013
25
This result sees Allingham and Williams climb to 5th in the MSA Welsh Rally Championship standings
with four rounds remaining. Allingham and Williams next outing will be the fourth round, the Severn
Valley National Rally based in Builth Wells over the weekend of 15th/16
th June.

WRGB 14-17 November 2013
Hi All,
As you have no doubt read in the Motoring Press or have heard by other means, the WRGB (World
Rally GB, my interpretation) is to return to a base in North Wales:
The Contract for the event to be based in North Wales is for THREE years, the North Wales Teams are therefore keen to put on a professional show over those three years in the hope that the contract will be renewed.
Scruitineering / Base Camp will be at the Toyota Factory on Deeside, not that easy to find, but for anybody who does not know it, It is the Deeside Industrial Estate Zone 3, follow the road round and you finally come to the plant.
On the Thursday, 14/11/13, there will be Free Practice and a Shake Down / Qualifying, venue to be confirmed but local to Deeside / Conwy
Start is scheduled for Conwy, although there is intended to be some action in Llandudno, with Stages in the Betws-y-coed and Clocaenog areas (possibly night stages)
Friday is scheduled to take them to the Sweet Lamb / Hafren / Myhiran areas
Saturday ALL REQUIRED KDMC will be back home in Gartheiniog, to the best of my knowledge run twice, the Stage will be under the Control of Steve (Henstock) ably assisted by Mike (Timmins). There will be a National Event running between the WRGB runs. So a full day is envisaged
KDMC Bulletin June 2013
26
Sunday will see a re-run of the Thursday stages, with “hopefully” an old style “Spectator Stage” and a “Super Special” Head to Head.
Please note that this information is subject to change, but is the basic layout. Help is required, every
day, and everywhere, if you want to get involved outwith the KDMC Gartheiniog Stage, either contact
me and I will pass on, or Alan Edwards, whose name will be appearing on the event documentation
as the area Organiser.
Whatever you feel like doing, just KDMC on the Saturday, or more, Thursday – Sunday, the first
move is to register with RST (Rally Stage Team) mailto:[email protected] If already
registered just click on the website; tell them what you would like to do, where and when. They will
then pass the information forward. Or if all else fails contact Steve (Henstock), Mike (Timmins) or
myself; and we will advise.
More information as I get it.

September
Once again KDMC have been asked to run a few tests on the Vale of Clwyd Classic, a new venue for this year at Ruthin Auction Market, off the A525 at Map Reference 116/115587. We will be running Test 2, 3 & 5 at the venue, Test 5 is Tests 2&3 combined. Test commanders are Graham Raeburn and possibly Laura Bradshaw, we will require 4 timekeeping crews and plenty of test observers. Timings are as follows for First Car, Test 2 & 3 09:05 and Test 5 11:00. The Vale of Clwyd usually gets a very good entry including many KDMC members and has proved a great days marshalling in the past, so please contact myself or Laura to volunteer. If anyone would also like to marshal a road control in the afternoon, please let me know and I’ll pass your details on to the event organizers.
