Cognitive LinguisticsAn IntroductionVyvyan Evans, University of Bangor
An authoritative general introduction to cognitive linguistics
Praise for the first edition
‘I whole-heartedly congratulate Evans & Green for their laborious work and, accordingly, recommend it to be used as a textbook … indispensable reading.’ Linguist List
‘This massive yet reasonably priced book provides a very useful guide to major parts of the ‘cognitive’ strand of linguistics and I have no doubt that every cognitive linguist will want it as a reference book.’ THE
This core text provides coverage of all areas of cognitive linguistics in terms accessible to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is also sufficiently comprehensive and detailed to serve as a reference work for scholars from linguistics and neighbouring disciplines who wish to gain a better understanding of cognitive linguistics.
The book is subdivided into four distinct parts: the cognitive linguistics enterprise; cognitive semantics; cognitive approaches to grammar; and new horizons in cognitive linguistics. • The cognitive linguistics enterprise• Cognitive semantics• Cognitive approaches to grammar• New Horizons in Cognitive Linguistics
It is suitable for a range of different course types, both in terms of length and level, as well as in terms of focus. In addition to defining the field, it also includes appropriate critical evaluation and explores complementary and potentially competing approaches. In particular, cognitive linguistics is compared and contrasted with formal approaches including Generative Grammar, formal approaches to semantics, and Relevance Theory and sets recent developments in these fields in context.
New for the Second Edition• Exercises and annotated reading list at the end of each chapter• A menu of suggested ‘pathways’ through the book• 6 new chapters• All other chapters are extensively revised• 200 diagrammatic illustrations

Materials Evaluation and Design for Language TeachingIan McGrath, National Institute for Education, Singapore
Provides a systematic approach to the selection and subsequent evaluation of textbooks
Praise for the first edition
‘Offers teachers and teacher trainers a practical guide for materials evaluation, adaptation, supplementation or writing, with the author adopting a pro-textbook position.’ Journal of Language Teaching
Teaching materials play a crucial role in teaching-learning. When these take the form of a textbook it is essential that the textbook be carefully selected to meet both external requirements and the needs of the teachers. It is also important that teachers be able to mediate between the textbook and the learners, adapting and supplementing the book as necessary. This textbook gives practical advice on the adaptation and supplementation of teaching materials and goes beyond this. For teachers who prefer to prepare their own materials rather than basing their teaching on a book there are suggestions on systematising the process of materials development and on the use of learner-generated materials.
New for the Second Edition• A focus on developments such as coursebook packages and
the wider range of ancillary materials• Discussion of the increased availability of ‘lesson-ready’
material online• Emphasises growing teacher autonomy and the expectation
that teachers will produce their own materials• Includes numerous examples and 100 images
The book will be of particular value to practising teachers following a modular Masters course or involved in some other form of professional development, whether organised or self-directed.

Focuses on transition talk and boundary crossing discourse in the modern workplace
Moving between linguistic, professional and national boundaries is part of daily reality in the modern workplace. A changing employment market means frequently crossing boundaries into new organisations, new linguistic environments and new countries. This affects the enactment of professional identity which is necessarily fluid and dynamic, responsive to the continuous crossing of boundaries and the complex interactions this typically entails. This book brings together scholars with diverse views, representing a range of different disciplinary areas in the field and merges interest in workplace discourse and intercultural communication with research on crossing and relational issues.

This book introduces those new to phonetics to the concepts, terminology and representations needed for an understanding of how English is pronounced around the world. Assuming no priorknowledge, the book guides readers through the vocal tract and explains how sounds of speech aremade. Two main forms of representation are used: phonetic transcription and simple acoustic data.As far as possible, the book is based on naturally-occurring, conversational speech so that readersare familiar with the details of everyday talk (and not just the careful pronunciations represented in dictionaries). Examples are taken from around the English-speaking world, including NorthAmerica, Australia, New Zealand and varieties of British English. Introductory chapters cover thebasic phonetic framework, while later chapters discuss groups of sounds in more detail. The booktakes an open-minded approach to what sounds of English might be significant for making meaning, and highlights the significance of word meaning, morphology, sociolinguistics and conversational interaction in phonetic analysis.
Key Features
• Introductory text assuming no prior knowledge of phonetics
• Informed by up to date research on naturally occurring conversational English
• Focuses on phonetics as a skill and encourages the reader to reflect on their own speech
• Covers a range of forms of phonetic representation.

Language and LogicsAn Introduction to the Logical Foundations of LanguageHoward Gregory
A comprehensive introduction to non-classical logics and their use in linguistics
This book takes linguistics students beyond the classical logic used in introductory courses into the variety of non-standard logics that are commonly used in research. It embraces a wide variety of material, including modal logic, partial logic, situation semantics and the growing area of the substructural logics, starting with simple and intuitive concepts. Prior knowledge of mathematical logic is not required as issues are introduced and discussed in clear and precise English before symbolic notation is introduced. The variety of material is organised around one central thread: the tailoring of logical systems to reasoning about different apageslications in linguistics and beyond.

Elements of Formal SemanticsYoad Winter, University of Utrecht
Introduces the essential principles and techniques of formal semantics
In formal semantics, structure is treated as the essential ingredient in the creation of sentence meaning from individual word meaning. This approach synthesizes the traditions of logical language analysis with the scientific findings of contemporary empirical linguistics. In an accessible style, with ample examples and exercises, this volume reveals the beauty and elegance of the mathematical study of meaning. Designed as a quick yet thorough introduction to one of the most vibrant areas of research in modern linguistics today, this book is an essential companion for students and instructors.

Bringing together the subjects of English compounding and Chomsky’s theory of ‘Lexicalism’, Heinz J. Giegerich demonstrates in this new study the impossibility of drawing a line between compounds and phrases, and therefore between the lexicon and the syntax, the two grammatical modules of Lexicalism. Proposing a new model of grammatical modularity, where the lexicon and the syntax overlap ‘like slates on a roof’, Giegerich examines long-standing and unresolved questions about the difference between English compounds and phrases. With its detailed study of compound words in English and its comprehensive analysis of Lexicalism’s theoretical framework, Lexical structures: Compounding and the modules of grammar will be of profound interest to all researchers and students with an interest in English linguistics, and in morphological, syntactic or phonological theory.
Heinz J. Giegerich is Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His previous publications include Metrical phonology and phonological structure (1985), English phonology (1992) and Lexical strata in English (1999). At Edinburgh University Press he is the editor of the Edinburgh Textbooks on the English Language and a co-founder and co-editor (with Laurie Bauer and Greg Stump) of the journal Word Structure.
A Substance-free Phonology of BretonAn Analysis of the Breton Dialect of BothoaPavel Iosad, University of Edinburgh
The first in-depth analyses of Breton treated in a substance-free phonological framework
This in-depth analysis of Breton introduces previously underused data into the theoretical landscape and also demonstrates the viability of a modular framework for phonology. It introduces a minimalist system of phonological representations built up on a language-specific basis, without regard to the phonetic realisation of phonological objects. It then integrates this with a fully-fledged computational framework and a stratal interface between phonology and morphosyntax, showcasing the numerous empirical and conceptual advantages of a substance free view of phonology.

On the Margins of ModernismXu Xu, Wumingshi and Popular Chinese Literature in the 1940sChristopher Rosenmeier, University of Edinburgh
Introduces popular 1940s Chinese authors and explores their influence on Chinese literature
This book introduces and analyzes the fiction of Xu Xu and Wumingshi and shows their importance during the Sino-Japanese War (1937–45) until 1949. It makes the wider argument that their short stories and novels in this period, and popular Chinese literature more broadly, was indebted to the Shanghai modernist writers of the 1930s (xinganjue pai). Shanghai modernism in the 1930s was an important literary movement, but the conventional view is that these authors had little long-lasting impact on Chinese literature. This book contests this view, arguing that their innovative style was eventually appropriated and adapted into popular literature in multiple ways.

This collection of original essays opens up the rich topic of Joseph Conrad’s complex relationship with language
This volume discusses a diverse selection of issues that emerge from the study of Conrad’s relationship to language. The essays are gathered in three linked sections: the first looks at Conrad’s engagement with specific lexical sets and terminology – maritime language, the language of terror, and abstract language; the second section addresses issues of linguistic communication – speech, hearing, and writing; and the third explores Conrad’s relationship to specific languages including his deployment of foreign languages, his decision to write in English, and his reception through translation.

Matters of DisorDer
Series Editor: Lara Ryazanova-Clarke
Books in this series examine the interrelationships between russian language and society. as language is often a central issue within russian culture, anthropology, history, politics and sociology, the series provides a forum for scholars across several disciplines to examine these issues and expand the field of russian studies.
‘Making an important contribution to emerging sociolinguistics of globalisation, this wide-ranging, comprehensive, and up-to-date collection explores political and demographic causes of unprecedented expansion of russian in the globalised world. this volume offers intriguing insights into legal, social, economic, and sociolinguistic complexities of the ongoing transformation of the russian linguasphere.’
aneta Pavlenko, temple University
the first book to examine russian as a minority language in different countriesthe collapse of the soviet Union dramatically changed the global distribution of the russian language. apart from russia, it is now spoken in fourteen successor states of the former soviet Union, while the increased mobility of russian speakers has expanded russophone communities across the world.
taking a broad sociolinguistic perspective, this book explores a comprehensive set of tensions which emerged from the dislocated and deterritorialised position of russian in the contemporary world. it examines contexts for shaping russian speakers’ identities in various locations across the globe, the shifting attitudes towards russian language outside the metropolis, emerging new global varieties of russian, and the use of russian language as soft power in the transnational russophone media. in order to discuss problems posed by the current stage of globalisation of russian, a number of non-metropolitan spaces are sampled: chapters take the reader to locations which include both the post- soviet states, specifically Ukraine, estonia, Latvia and Belarus, and the countries of the traditional ‘West’ – italy, the Us and israel.
a thought-provoking and engaging book, it is essential reading for advanced students and specialists in russian and eastern european studies, Post-soviet studies, Language studies and sociolinguistics.
Lara Ryazanova-Clarke is senior Lecturer in russian and academic Director of the Princess Dashkova russian Centre at the University of edinburgh.
