BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Solemnity of Pentecost ~ May 20th, 2018

Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 The First Reading describes a noise like a strong driving wind that points to the presence of the Spirit, ruah. That Spirit works through the preaching of the Apostles, enabling everyone to understand the message despite the different languages. Through the Spirit, the human family is recreated into a new people of God that can communicate and understand each other. The Tower of Babel is reversed. “Great things happen when God mixes with us” are the words of a Christian hymn. What great thing happened to you when the Holy Spirit showed up?

Galatians 5: 16-25 What helps you when you find the “spirit and the flesh at war” within you? A form of prayer? A spiritual director? Some other resource or strategy?

John 15: 26-27; 16:12-15 “The Spirit of truth” will testify to Jesus and will guide us into a deeper understanding of Jesus’ teaching. What teaching of Jesus has been made clearer to you through the power of the Holy Spirit?

MANNA SUNDAY

Manna Bags are available at the exits of our Church. Kindly return your filled Manna Bag on next weekend, Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. Canned food items in greatest need are: beef stew, tuna fish, fruit, vegetables, pasta, soups, and pork & beans. Thank you for reaching out to people in emergency situations. This is the last food collection until September.

~Manna Prayer~ Jesus, many times throughout Your life You fed hungry people and You called others to help. You called the young child with the loaves and fishes to share his gifts. You call each one of us today. Open our eyes to see the needs of others. Open our ears to hear your call to share. Open our hearts to welcome all people to the table of love. ~Amen~

SFA: Stewardship-Faith in Action

Stewardship: Eternal Maternal Love If you feel that you might not be fully equipped to handle a calling you have to a particular stewardship ponder this for a moment. A young infant is delivered to an orphanage with the death of her parents in 1918. No other relatives are around to take the child in. The young girl is never adopted. She graduates from the orphanage school at 17 and emerges into the world alone. For the next decade and a half the intrepid young lass works two, sometimes three jobs in order to make ends meet. She meets the love of her life at one of those jobs. They marry and have a family. The young wife and mother not only raises her two children in the Catholic faith with her husband Joe but also assists countless numbers of relatives and friends when they are either in need and\or in failing health. One night the mother is talking to her son. In a matter-of-fact voice, without a trace of complaint or lament, she says, “You know the first time I ever knew what it was like to be in a family was when I had one.” The son is struck speechless by this simple yet profound declaration. It almost seems incomprehensible to him. Surrounded by grade school classmates whose parents were once themselves children in their parents’ homes it never dawned on him that his own Mom had no role model or frame of reference on a first-hand basis as to how to raise a family or be a wife. Yet, here he witnessed her doing it, day in and day out, on a consistent and magnificent basis. That mother was my Mom. The late “Mary O”, the beloved and iconic matriarch of the O’Loughlin family, led a full and blessed life of over 92 years before being called home to Heaven in 2011. At her funeral Mass I reflected on the conversation she had with me many years before. What she described in that short yet powerful sentence spoke volumes about her. How did Mom excel in roles that she was, in human eyes, seemingly ill prepared to do? She provided the answer with another story. “When I was very young I went into the chapel. I looked up at the images of Jesus and His Blessed Mother. I said, ‘Jesus, I will take you as my father. Mary I will take you as my mother. You will be my family.’.” Yet another simple yet profound declaration that emanated from this young child! So, as you meditate upon the stewardship role (or roles) to which you feel a calling do not overly worry about being 100% prepared or equipped. Learn from the story of Mary O’Loughlin. The strength you need and the examples you seek are as close as the reassuring images of the Blessed Mother and her Son Who look upon you lovingly as you kneel in church.

THE RCIA JOURNEY The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is

created by God and for God. ~Do you know someone who may be seeking a relationship with Jesus through the RCIA Journey? ~What is the RCIA Journey? ~A journey for those who have never been baptized and are interested in becoming a Catholic OR… ~They were baptized in another faith and would like to inquire about the Catholic faith OR… ~They are a baptized Catholic but have never finished their initiation. Encourage them to attend an Evening of Inquiry on Monday, June 4. It’s a one-hour presentation from 7-8PM in the rectory! Questions? Please call Madelyn McBride 610-543-0848 2-175

PRAYER TO THE MOTHER OF THE LORD

FOR ALL MOTHERS Mary, on this day when we honor all mothers, we turn to you. We thank the Lord, whom you serve, for the great gift of motherhood. Never has it been known that

anyone who sought your intercession was left unaided by grace. Dear Mother, thank you for your “Yes” to the invitation of the angel, which brought heaven to earth and changed human history. You opened yourself to God’s word and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Dear Mother, intercede for all of our mothers. Ask your Divine Son to give them the grace of surrendered love so that they could join with you in giving their own “Fiat.” May they find daily strength to say ‘yes’ to the call to the sacrificial love—the very heart of the vocation of motherhood. May their love and witness be a source of great inspiration for all of us called to follow your Son. On this Mother’s Day, Mother of the Word Incarnate, pray for us who have recourse to you… In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
