BREAKING OPEN THE WORD
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ January 31, 2021 Deuteronomy 18:15-20
The First Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy introduces us to the role of a prophet. They were spokespersons, or messengers, of God. What does it mean to you to be a messenger of God today? How is God’s word made manifest today?
1 Corinthians 7:32-35 In the Second Reading we find Paul speaking about whether it is better to be married or single. At that time Paul was under the impression that the Lord would soon return to this earth. Whether you be single or married, how do you avoid distractions that can prevent you from focusing on the impending return of the Lord Jesus?
Mark 1:21-28 Mark’s Gospel passage emphasizes the astonishing authority of Jesus’ teaching. While teaching in the synagogue and healing a man with an unclean spirit. The primary focus of this Gospel is not the exorcism, but rather the awesome manifestation of Jesus’ power. Reflect on a time that you were transformed by the power of God’s Word. Share your experience with someone else who needs an encouragement of their spirit.
Pope Francis has announced a Year of St. Joseph which began on December 8th. Here in our parish we are going to celebrate by hosting a “Consecration to St. Joseph.” Consecration to St. Joseph emulates the tried-and-true preparation method employed by St. Louis de Montfort in his Marian Consecration which we have done here in the past at SFA. This consecration effort will highlight many of St. Joseph’s titles, privileges and heroic virtues. Join us on this journey from February 15th until March 19th. You can do the Consecration on your own at home or with the parish through weekly meetings online. You will need the book entitled, “Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wonders of Our Spiritual Father – 33-Day Preparation Guide for Total Consecration to St. Joseph by Father Don Calloway. Order your copy now through the parish by calling Madelyn McBride at the rectory at 610-543-0848, ext. 118.
Our Lady, Queen of Peace Presidium Legion of Mary
We invite you to become an auxiliary member of The Legion of Mary. There are no meetings to attend and no dues to pay. Auxiliary members commit to praying the prayers of a small pamphlet (called the Tessera) each day as well as five decades of the rosary. If you are already praying the rosary, you need not add an additional five decades. The prayers of the Tessera may be said together or divided throughout the day. The Legion recommends that you offer your prayers as an unreserved gift to Our Lady. If you are interested in becoming an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary, please call Gus McClay at 610-544-7223.

The Corner Brought to you by your Evangelization Team
As we celebrate this “Sunday of the Word of God”, consider the adventure that awaits us… “Every single person in the Bible is put there to serve you. Hidden between the lines of these ancient texts, they wait, wanting to teach you the great truths of the journey.”
~Matthew Kelly “Rediscovering Catholicism”

Let us pray for those who SERVE and PROTECT… All-powerful and ever-living God, when Abraham left his native land and departed from his people, You kept him safe through all his journeys. Protect these soldiers. Be their constant companion and their strength in battle, their refuge in every adversity. Guide them, O Lord that they may return home in safety. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

“ For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink…” Matthew 25:35 MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.” The Souper Bowl of Caring is now a nationwide movement that unites schools, congregations, and community organizations in the fight against hunger. The event has transformed Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest youth-led weekend of giving and service. We here at St Francis of Assisi are teaming up with the Springfield Ministerium and Covenant Methodist Church to collect canned goods, non-perishable food items, and monetary donations on Saturday, February 6th. On February 6th, Parishioners can leave a bag with canned goods on their door step before 10AM and someone will be by to pick it up and deliver to Covenant Methodist. Alternatively, Parishioners can also drop off items at Covenant Methodist Church. Those who wish to volunteer for food packing at Covenant or any of the other designated packing sites can sign up via the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a4fafaf2ba2fd0-delco. Packing will be done over a period of several days (Sat 2/6 – Fri 2/12) in small groups of no more than six (6) volunteers practicing safe social distancing and EVERYONE must wear a mask at all times. All volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult who can be present for the entire time. Monetary donations are also accepted at the following Website - https://map.tacklehunger.org/ From here you can designate your donation to the Bernardine Center in Chester or any other local food bank of your choosing. THANK YOU to everyone for your generosity, donations, and participation, especially our young people. We are grateful for your CARING AND SHARING! MEDITATION
"Many people seem to worry themselves a great deal more over the things they cannot help than over the things that they can. ... This want of proportion is doubtless observable in myself. Do I think more of the accidents of birth, fortune, and personal appearance than of the self that I have created? For I myself am responsible for myself. 'To be born a gentleman is an accident; to die one is an achievement.' Other things, then, I may not be able to help; but myself, I can. As I am at this very moment, as my character is—truthful or untruthful, pure or impure, patient or impatient, slow to wrath or quick-tempered, eager, enthusiastic, energetic, or lazy and dull and wasteful of time—I have no one to thank but myself ... the fact remains that I myself alone am responsible for my own character; for character is an artificial thing that is not born, but made."
