2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The New Year got off to a wonderful start with many new and exciting
opportunities for our students. The virtue of the month of January is courage, and
as is written in our main hallway, Lord God, grant us the courage to truly love you,
our Earth and our neighbours. I want to thank everyone for their warm welcome to
St. Cecilia, from students to staff and parents, I couldn’t have asked for more! I am
happy to share with you below, our newsletter.
Wishing everyone a year filled with peace, love and prosperity!

Scientist in the School
On Monday, January 14, Mme. Pasquale, Ms.
Pelech and Mme P. Pamula’s students participated
in a Scientist in the School workshop, with the aid
of Mr. York and Ms. Savoie. The topic covered was
“Gearing Up: Fun with Pulleys and Gears”. The
students rotated between centres, while
experimenting with and taking a look at simple
everyday machines and how pulleys and gears are
part of everyday things we use. We had a
wonderful time being scientists for the day.
We would like to thank CSPC for providing funding
for our students, allowing them to enjoy a great
experience!

Eco Club Battery Drive Contest
Members of the Eco Club who
Organized the Event
Congratulations to Ms. Vedia’s grade 1 class for
winning St. Cecilia’s Battery Drive Contest! The St.
Cecilia Eco Team led the initiative!
Hi! We’re the Stewardship EcoTeam, and we
recently ran a battery drive that was a HUGE
success! First, we should explain the purpose of the
drive! After we collect the batteries, we donate
them to a company who will take the nutrients out
of them, and then they give the nutrients to kids in
third world countries! I’m sure a lot of you have
donated batteries to the school, so we would like to
thank you for that! The winning class was
Ms. Vedia’s class, who won with a total of 1563
batteries!
Used Marker Collection
Please remember that our Eco Team collects used
markers of any brand, including white board
markers, to be recycled responsibly in the Crayola
Colour Cycle program.

Learning with Hearts, Hands & Minds
– Growing in Harmony
Mr. Litner's class participated in their own Genius
Hour throughout the first term of school. Students
displayed their culminating Genius Hour
presentations to staff and students this month!
Genius hour is a concept that allows students to
explore their own interests and encourages
innovation in the classroom. Inspired by Google
20%, where Google employees are given 20% of
their work week to work on a passion project.

Art Work at St. Cecilia
Ms. Pelech's Grade 4/5 students created an art piece
inspired by the "cubist movement," pioneered by
Pablo Picasso. In cubist artwork, objects are
analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstract
form. The students created a painting showing two
sides of a face - the profile and the front view.
Fantastic work!
Senior Boys Basketball Team
Congratulations to our Senior Boys Basketball team who
are St. Wilfrid Invitational Champions. The team went
with 4 wins and no losses. Thank you to the parents for
funding the registration fee!
