PASTOR’S NOTE: For some of us, it’s a sense of entitlement. Our education, our social class, our income should move us up tothe line, free us from struggles “ordinary” people endure. Forothers, it’s fear disguised as faith: a “spirituality” that places us on“God’s side”. Then there those mired in resentment and anger. It’snot us - it’s “them.” “They” are the ones responsible for our problemor challenge. We need to get our (fill in the blank) nation, church,
community, whatever....back from “them.” While we are not as imperious as the scribes of Jesus’ time, our
self-centeredness and thoughtlessness to the plight of others are justas divisive and destructive. The kingdom of Tod is realized only inour embracing the spirit of servanthood that is at the heart of Jesus’Gospel: a servanthood centered in respect for everyone as sons anddaughters of God; one that finds fulfillment and satisfaction in thelove, compassion and kindness we extend to others; one that places
the common good and struggles of others before our own wants andnarrow interests. To follow Jesus it to realize our need for oneanother and their need for us.
