CHURCH OFFICE HOURS:

Friday 9a.m.-3p.m
Christmas season just got over. This year we only get five and half weeks of Or-dinary Time in. We don’t get back to Ordinary Time until Monday, May 25th, Memorial Day. In between we have the seasons of Lent and Easter. As always, we’ll begin the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday. This year, Ash Wednesday falls on February 18th. Ash Wednesday Schedule: Mass at St. Anthony - 7 AM Service at Maple Lawn - 4 PM Mass at St. Gabriel - 5:30 PM Mass at IHM - 7:15 PM On Ash Wednesday, we receive ashes on our foreheads with the words, “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Both of these statements are good reminders of our fall-en human nature. We don’t dwell on this to cause that classic Catholic guilt. Ra-ther we dwell on this to remind ourselves just how hopeless we are without Je-sus. It prevents us from taking our getting to heaven for granted. Yes, the Fall did not completely remove our ability to do good, but in order to be saved, in order to get to heaven, we have zero chance without Christ. As I’m writing this, I am still working on the schedule, but this year, I’m hoping to lead more of the Stations of the Cross. I invite you to come weekly and partic-ipate in this wonderful devotion. If you have ever seen the movie The Passion of the Christ, you have an inkling of just how much pain and suffering Jesus went through for our salvation. Praying the Stations of the Cross is a great way of re-minding us how great Jesus gift of forgiveness truly is. It is also a reminder of we how should more readily offer forgiveness and mercy to others who have wronged us. Unless, we understand the gravity of our sin, we will never know the greatness of God’s love, forgiveness, and mercy. The ashes we receive on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday are made from the burning of blessed palms left over from Palm Sunday. On Palm Sunday, Jesus arrives in Jerusalem as King. He rides into town to much fanfare and support. However, less than a week later, the dark fallen side of human nature manifests itself. They end up crucifying the very one they hailed as king. Ashes remind us then of our fallenness, but they also remind us that Jesus should be King of our lives. We may fail to make Jesus King of our lives and make ashes of God’s love and mercy, but we shouldn’t give up. We ask for forgiveness, we go to the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation if we need to, and then we start again. I cannot encourage you enough to give God a chance. If you have felt burdened by anything, I dare you to try the Sacrament of Reconciliation sometime during Lent. (Times and places will be announced later.) I promise, God’s love and mer-cy is great enough to set you free. May you have a blessed February and start to Lent. Peace out, Father Vogel

LENTEN Observance
Remember that during Lent we abstain from meat on every Friday. This a wonderful opportunity to draw ourselves closer to God during Lent. Take some time and consider what you would like to fast on: give up tv, pop, candy, sports, ect. Make your fast a prayerful decision you can stick with. Attend Mass, daily Mass and Stations of the Cross through out Lent to strengthen your faith.

Ash Wednesday
In the Roman Catholic Church,
Ash Wednesday is the first day of
Lent, the season of preparation for
the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. (In Eastern Rite
Catholic churches, Lent begins
two days earlier, on Clean Mon-
day.)
Ash Wednesday always falls 46
days before Easter. Since Easter
falls on a different date each year,
Ash Wednesday does, too. While
Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all Roman Catholics
are encouraged to attend Mass on
this day in order to mark the be-
ginning of the Lenten season.
The Distribution of Ashes:
During Mass, the ashes which give
Ash Wednesday its name are dis-
tributed. The ashes are made by burning the blessed palms that
were distributed the previous year
on Palm Sunday; many churches
ask their parishioners to return
any palms that they took home so that they can be burned.
After the priest blesses the ashes
and sprinkles them with holy wa-
ter, the faithful come forward to receive them. The priest dips his
right thumb in the ashes and,
making the Sign of the Cross on
each person's forehead, says,
"Remember, man, that thou art
dust, and to dust thou shalt re-turn" (or a variation on those
words).
A Day of Repentance:
The distribution of ashes reminds
us of our own mortality and calls
Quick Facts:
• Date: 46 days before Easter Sunday
• Type of Feast: Commemoration.
• Readings: Joel 2:12-18; Psalm 51:3-4, 5-6AB, 12-13, 14 and 17; 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18.
us to repentance. In the early
Church, Ash Wednesday was the
day on which those who had sinned, and who wished to be read-
mitted to the Church, would begin
their public penance. The ashes
that we receive are a reminder of
our own sinfulness, and many
Catholics leave them on their fore-heads all day as a sign of humility.
Fasting and Abstinence Are Re-
quired:
The Church emphasizes the peni-
tential nature of Ash Wednesday by
calling us to fast and abstain from
meat. Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under the age of 60
are required to fast, which means
that they can eat only one complete
meal and two smaller ones during
the day, with no food in between.
Catholics who are over the age of 14 are required to refrain from eat-
ing any meat, or any food made
with meat, on Ash Wednesday.
Taking Stock of Our Spiritual
Life:
This fasting and abstinence is not
simply a form of penance, however; it is also a call for us to take stock
of our spiritual lives. As Lent be-
gins, we should set specific spiritu-
al goals we would like to reach be-
fore Easter and decide how we will
pursue them—for instance, by go-ing to daily Mass when we can and
receiving the Sacrament of Confes-
sion more often.
5 Tips for Lenten Reading
With Children
For children, Lenten discipline is often confined to giving something up, such as candy or TV. But Lent should be a time for developing good spiritual habits as well.
One of the best spiritual habits is reading the Bible every day. Spiritual Reading for Lent provides an easy way to do this, using scriptural readings that the Church has chosen for us.
1. Choose the Right Bible. Choose a translation of the Bible that's age-appropriate for your children. It doesn't need to be "dumbed-down"; but younger children might be more comfortable with the language of a modern Catholic translation, such as the New American Bible, than with an older one with more elevated lan-guage, such as the King James Version or the Douay-Rheims (which is the version used in Spiritual Reading for Lent).
2. Be Consistent. Try to do the read-ings at the same time every day. They won't take long—the longest will take three or four minutes. Reading them at the dinner table each night, right after Grace After Meals, works very well.
3. Recap the Action. Remind your children of "the story so far." The first four weeks of Lent are the story of God delivering Israel out of Egypt and Israel's exodus to the Promised Land. Take 30 seconds to recap the story before reading each day's selection
4. Draw Out the Themes. After the reading, briefly discuss it so that your children can understand that the story isn't just an historical one, but a spir-itual one as well. The reflections offered in Spiritual Reading for Lent will give you ideas for each daily read-ing, but there are some overarching themes to keep in mind: Israel of the Old Testament is the model of the Church of the New Testament; Egypt represents the darkness of sin, and the Israelites' slavery is our slavery to sin; the Promised Land is Heaven; the Exo-dus represents our struggle to free ourselves from sin so that we may enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
5. Make Time for Questions and Answers. Ask your children a few questions about the details of the readings. Make this quizzing fun, and they will be eager to try to answer your questions. That means that they will remember the readings long after Lent has ended. And make sure to ask them if they have any questions for you, too.
