Notes Common to Both Parishes
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Readings: Is 55:1-3; Rom 8:35, 37-39; Mt 14:13-21
Theme: The Messianic Banquet. Important diplomatic activity is usually sealed with a banquet. A festive meal together or a joyous picnic is a symbol of human togetherness in love and happiness. What a salesman does when he stops on the road to eat lunch is en-tirely different from participating in a thanksgiving banquet. Parties, eating and drinking together play an important role in our society and signify beautiful values. It was the same in biblical times. Hence the bible repeatedly evokes the banquet symbol to describe God’s love and humankind’s re-lationship of love with Him. The writers of the scriptures were fully aware that human beings do not have the concepts and terminology to describe ade-quately who God is and what He does for us by adopting us as His children, or how all of this will be fully accomplished in the hereaf-ter. So they utilized the banquet symbol as an apt sign to indicate the lines along which we should think when we meditate on God and what He has in store for those who love Him (see 1 Cor 2:9). Rather than being too inquisitive about details, we should hope for a happy future with the spontaneous and simple excitement of a child who sees the packages around the Christmas tree but must wait. “The eyes of all look hopefully to you, O God….You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” (Responsorial Psalm.)
Choose Life: “It is morally incoherent
to say that abortion is wrong at some stages,
and by some methods, but acceptable at
others. Human life is indivisible in its moral value. Either it is always and everywhere
sacred, or it is always and everywhere dis-
posable. There can be no middle ground. (Fr. Frank Pavone, Priests for Life)
Vocation Viewpoint: Nothing will separate us from the love of Christ. If God is calling you to full time service in the church do not be afraid. The Lord is with you. (Romans 8:35-39)
MANY THANKS to the servers who faithfully showed up for week day Masses during the summer. Keep up the good work!
Why Do Catholics…. *genuflect in church? In medieval Europe one dem-
onstrated respect for a king or noble by going down
on one knee. Building on that tradition, we bend on
the right knee to show reverence for the Lord in the
Eucharist, whether on the altar, in the tabernacle, or in
the monstrance. (We also genuflect before the cross
from Good Friday through the Easter Vigil.)
*get ashes on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday?
To ancient Jews, wearing sackcloth and covering
themselves or sitting in ashes showed repentance and
humility, and acted as a penance. Thus, the early
Church adopted the practice of wearing ashes at the
start of Lent to show repentance, too.
But as he places the ashes on our forehead, the
minister says: “Remember you are dust and unto dust
you will return,” to remind us that our time on earth
will pass away but our life in Heaven will last forever.
*give the Sign of Peace during Mass? The first
words Jesus said to His apostles after His Resurrection
were “Peace be with you.” After that their fear disap-
peared.
By offering each other the sign of peace at Mass,
we share that Peace with the entire Body of Christ.
Jesus also told us to reconcile with one another be-
fore approaching the altar of God (Mt 5:23). Thus,
the sign of peace is a gesture of reconciliation with
those around us before coming to the altar to receive
Holy Communion.
*say Amen: at the end of some prayers? In He-
brew, the word “Amen” shares the same root as the
word “believe.” This root also express trustworthi-
ness and faithfulness.
When you read the gospels, you’ll see that Jesus
sometimes used the word “Amen” twice in a row to
emphasize the trustworthiness of His teaching. He
wanted His listeners to pay special attention.
So when we say “Amen” at the end of a prayer, we
reinforce our faith in what we just said. We also ex-
press our confidence that God will hear our prayers.
A kind deed receives
compound interest. -Anonymous

St. Gabriel‟s Parish
To Parishioners of both Parishes…….
Any members of St.. Gabriel’s & St. John’s Par-
ishes, male or female (couples would be great), in-
terested in being involved on a committee that as-
sesses the needs of our parishes in family matters,
spiritual growth, welcoming new parishioners, pro-
grams for the elderly and youth please consider
joining the Family Life Committee. There are so
many areas to touch in a positive way, however, the
current committee needs your involvement to suc-
cessfully put plans into action. We cannot do all of
the above but choose programs that are available
and fit in to make a difference where the need ex-
ists. It is rewarding and an opportunity for spiritual
growth as a committee, as we pray, work, play, sup-
port in friendship, and grow together as a group.
Plan on attending the next meeting on the third
Wednesday in August to check it out. Meetings are
just once a month on the 3rd Wednesday at 7:00 pm
in St. John’s Church Hall. No meetings are held in
June and July. If the 3rd Wednesday is bad for you,
please check it out anyway as meeting night could
be negotiable
