Dear Easter People of God,
April is an exciting month here at Good Shepherd. On the first of the month, we'll gather for Palm Sunday complete with palm branches and greetings for our Savior. No April Fools' Day this year...rather, a true festival to celebrate with joy. Our King is h e r e a n d i s triumphant! But by Thursday evening, we will gather for one last meal with Jesus before He is arrested and put on trial. As we join around the Lord's Table and receive His body and blood in Holy Communion, we'll be reminded of why Jesus came to this earth - for our forgiveness. On Good Friday, we'll gather around a single white rose. At Christmas Eve, we gathered around a red rose and sang Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming. We heard about how the beautiful rose came into a thorn-filled garden to bring us hope and a new life. This Good Friday, the rose saga continues. We will journey through a unique service called "The Way of the Rose," written by a Lutheran pastor that will illustrate the Good Friday account by a single white rose. And then of course on Sunday we will be overwhelmed with the scent of lilies and the sounds of
trumpets as we rejoice that our Savior is alive and still at work in the world. Our Easter Sunday service is always one of my favorites. Would you think about inviting at least one person to our Easter Sunday services who otherwise would not have a place to celebrate
Easter? What a difference this Easter Sunday might make for someone who would otherwise sit at home and miss out on the greatest day of the year. Sure, you've heard the Easter message lots of times, but maybe that person you invite will experience the old, old story for the first time this year. Ask
the Holy Spirit to guide and direct you as you do your inviting.
Looking forward to another Hope-filled Easter! Pastor Ben Haupt

The current series for Sunday School is
focusing on events leading up to and
through Easter. The PS – 4th graders are
learning about Jesus the Sacrifice and how
we “Get Jesus as Lord,” “Get Clean on the
Inside,” “Get a Giving Heart,” and “Get Life
Forever,” all based on events that happen
between Palm Sunday and Easter.

of his insights and experiences at Sunday

The Care Ministry is asking for your
participation in helping to
care for members of
Good Shepherd when
needs arise.
Ways that you can help
are: preparing a meal,
helping with a home
repair or yard work,
visiting a shut-in, or
providing a ride for a
medical appointment.
Remember the old saying,
"many hands make light
work?" When many
participate, each person would
be ca l led upon only
occasionally. Thank you for
caring!
".......Just as I have loved you,
you also are to love one
another." (John 13: 34)

The 5th & 6th grade students, led by
Nancy Flach, are studying different
chapters of the Bible including: Grace
Chapter – Ephesians 2; Joy Chapter –
Philippians 4; Faith Chapter – Hebrews
11 and Repentance Chapter – Psalm 51.
The curriculum is very interactive using
everyday experiences, thoughts and
actions of the students to connect the
relevancy of the scripture to their lives.
This is done through creative object
lessons and the real life experiences and
leadership of Nancy. And for a new
perspective on Easter, the curriculum for
this year has them studying the
prophecies of the Old Testament.
I want to thank our entire Sunday School
leadership team. They give so much of
themselves for our children each and
every week of the school year. Thank you
to Doug Fuge, Margie Smith, Luanne
Haupt, Lynn Lindberg, Michele Stephens,
Rebecca Weisensel, Nancy Flach, and
Celina Haupt for your dedication to our
Sunday School program.
Sunday School is Awesome
I think you should come to Sunday school. It
is awesome! We start with a puppet show.
Gordy is a funny puppet and he loves peanut
butter sandwiches. Everybody laughs at that.
We have fun at the puppet show while learning
about God and Jesus. After the puppet show
if we brought our Bible we get Skittles. Then
we go to our class and talk about the puppet
show. We also do a cool craft. When we are
done, we go to our parents. I hope you will
come to Sunday school!

We are gearing for
another great Vacation
Bible School. Mark your
calendars for June 3-7 from
6:00 to 8:30pm with our VBS
Sunday on June 10. Here is how
you can be involved…
1. Volunteer - the next few weeks we will
be having sign-ups for
volunteers. We need people
to help decorate, be group
leaders, and assist with
various stations. Even if you've
never been involved before-
this is your chance to be a part
of the fun.
2. Donate - Look for our cloud
bulletin board in the fellowship
hall. Take a cloud and turn it
in with the donation amount.
This semester approximately 117 people are
meeting within twelve small groups in a
variety of locations. The number of
participants has been steadily increasing
s i n c e t h e

in 2010. I
hope to share
updates from
each of our
groups in the

months.
My small group
is led by Pam

John Ortberg, ‘If You
Want to Walk on
Water, You've Got To
Get Out of the Boat’
has made each of us take a bold and honest
look at our God-given gifts and how they are
a calling from God. We are confronting our
Small Group Ministry Janet FitzGerald
fears that tend to hold us back from serving
God and praying for courage to say no to
fear and yes to faith. Our discussions have
been open, heart-felt, and revealing,
bringing us closer
to one another and
to God's Word. I
look forward to our
meetings and value
our time together.”
Our group is
comprised of ten
women. We have
enjoyed lunch
together at the
Turnstile Deli before each
of our meetings. We
recently had a great time
making a Lenten dinner
at church, and hope to
visit the Guest House, an
adult day care facility, in
the near future to help
the residents with a craft
activity.
A huge thank you to all our small group
leaders for their dedication to this
wonderful ministry!
3. Prayers - Vacation Bible School is a huge
outreach to the unchurched in our
neighborhood. Please pray that we can
change lives and spread the gospel through
this program.

Congregational
Representative,
is to raise
awareness of LCEF’s role in the overall
ministry of the Lutheran Church
Missouri Synod (LCMS). The following is
a brief history of this ministry.
LCEF’s History: Church Extension Fund
(CEF) was founded in 1902 when
members of several congregations
pooled their funds together and raised
$400 for a new church. LCEF,
incorporated in 1978, is a continuation
of the Synod CEF serving the entire
LCMS. LCEF’s unique ministry-through-
investment program offers LCMS
members the opportunity to invest
their money, earn interest, and help
build churches and schools at the same
time. In fiscal year 2011*, LCEF
welcomed nearly 500 new loan
customers. Congregations and schools
gained funds for building, upgrading or
remodeling facilities, and rostered
church workers secured reasonable
housing and consolidation loans. LCEF

the ministry of church extension.

What’s the bottom line? LCEF is a
“minis try through investment”
organization that provides low cost
loans and services to LCMS churches
like us, schools, and rostered church

possible through the support of LCMS
members like you who invest their
money in LCEF and earn a competitive
interest rate.

BELIEVING IS SEEING
When the disciples saw Jesus after
his resurrection, they believed. But
Thomas, who was absent, doubted
until he, too, got to see and even
touch Jesus. For him, as the
others, seeing was believing.
But what of us who don’t get to
see Jesus in the flesh? If “seeing is
believing,” are we out of luck? No.
In fact, sometimes it works the
opposi te way ; somet imes
“believing is seeing.”
Try this: Despite any doubts,
choose to believe, trusting the
witness of someone who’s seen
God at work — a biblical figure or
present-day Christian. You’ll be
amazed at the love, healing, peace
and new life that spring out of
troubles. “With the eyes of your
heart” (Ephesians 1:18, NRSV), you
will see your Lord and your God.
During the month of February, 26
families (52 adults and 24 children)
visited the food pantry. This is a total
of 76 individuals served. One Bible
was given to a family.
Thank you to Rachel Scott for the
many days she served in the food
pantry while in town. We will miss
you while you are gone. We know
you will enjoy your time up north
visiting with family and friends and
we look forward to your safe return.

Beginning with the first Easter, the
celebration of the Resurrection
has been the focus of Christian
worship. Because the early
disciples were Jews they would
have observed the Sabbath on
Saturday. However, the first day of
the week became the day for
Christian worship. It was known as
the Lord's Day, the day of
Resurrection. Our weekly Sunday
worship is a celebration of Jesus'
resurrected presence with us - a
little Easter each week.
Celebrate with ten of our youth and
their families as they confirm their
baptism vows and confess their faith
on Sunday, April 29.
Two places in the
Bible, one in the Old
Testament and one
in the New, feature
the following words:
“My God, my God,
why have you
forsaken me?”
The New Testament
account is found in
Matthew 27:46,
when Jesus is hanging on the cross.
Where are the words found in the Old
Testament?
A. 1 Kings 19:4 B. Jeremiah 38:9 C. Psalm 22:1 D. Lamentations 1:20

CAR SHOW: This year’s car show is

The show will run
from 8:00 am to
12:00 noon.
There will be
some great classic cars, music, raffles
and a lot of fun - AND we will be offering
a terrific breakfast for only $6 for adults
and $3 for children 6 – 12. Check the
sign-up sheets in the narthex to see how
you can help. We’ll need volunteers
both indoors and out. You could: help in
the kitchen, assist with parking cars, sell
raffle tickets, or any number of other
things that will need to be done that
day. Or, you may want to provide a cake
or other home-made baked goods for
raffle prizes. Also, we will need some
door prizes for the car show participants.
If you are able to provide any or can
solicit some from businesses you deal
with, please contact Chuck Dyarmett.
Even if you can’t volunteer, please plan
to attend – it’s a great opportunity to
see some classic cars, enjoy
fellowship, have a wonderful
breakfast AND support one of our
church programs! We’ll start serving
breakfast at 7:00 am! Oh - and pray
for good weather!
That’s about it for this month. Please
join us as often as you can. As ever, if
you have a suggestion for an event or
outing you’d like to see us participate
in, please let us know.

(April 15-21 this year) by meeting a
need in your church or community.
Volunteering not only helps the
people we serve, it also has
surprising benefits for the volunteer.
Serving others builds social and

confidence and boosts physical
health . Studies show that
volunteering can
even ease chronic
pain and heart
disease.

and others — some
good by following
Jesus’ example of

Saturday of Holy Week is a strange day for the church. It’s sandwiched between Good Friday, when Jesus died on the cross, and Easter, when he rose.
Certainly, we know the truth and triumph of the resurrection, but until Jesus
comes again, we’re living in Saturday. The Lamb of God has been sacrificed, and the curtain of sin that separated us from God has been torn down. Yet we’re still looking forward to — as Jesus said — the renewal of all things.
Although we may be battered and bruised, stumbling, limping or crawling, we shouldn’t wallow in defeat. Instead, we can be confident in the victory Jesus won for us. We can shout with Paul, “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57, NRSV).
While you look back to Friday and forward to Sunday, live victoriously in Saturday. Jesus has won and has run the victory lap … and he’s coming around again. —Gregg McCaslin
