THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY
The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has
not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe
came into being or explain exactly what continues to give
it creative energy and masterful design. No religion
asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable
mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God
always transcends our limited ability to understand. God
is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we
Christians believe that our name for God best expresses
that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity
of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring
forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world.
Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity
and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD, merciful and gracious, rich
in kindness and faithfulness (Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9).
Psalm — Glory and praise for ever! (Daniel 3).
Second Reading — Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Live
with one another in peace, and the God of peace will be
with you (2 Corinthians 13:11-13).
Gospel — God did not send the Son to condemn the
world, but to give it abundant life (John 3:16-18). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997,

PRAYER They pray best who do not know that they are praying. —St. Anthony of Padua

We get the football verse today! It's hard to imagine an NFL game without someone in the stands waving a John 3:16 sign as a succinct summary of what Christianity is all about: "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life." Today, having completed the Easter season and launching into Ordinary Time, we celebrate Trinity Sunday, focusing on Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and our gospel passage draws us toward that beautiful communion within God, which opens up life for us. With the Easter Season having culminated in Pentecost, the outpouring of the Paraclete, it's fitting that with the Spirit having been revealed to us we would now see all three Persons in their unity. For us humans the astonishing thing is that the Holy Trinity is inviting us into communion with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It's one thing to learn of a Supreme Being, unimaginably higher than us, composed of a mysterious relationship between three persons. It's quite another to discover they want us to join in their company. And of course this is what we witnessed the entire Easter Season: Jesus lays down his life for us as our brother so that the fulness of Divinity could triumph in him and he could pour out upon us his Holy Spirit. The purpose of all of redemption is our entry into Divine Life. A marvelous feast day like today has the potential to peel back a little of the incomprehensibility, the remoteness of God: to make a part of our daily story the true, new, identity we've been given. Once upon a time cherubim and seraphim would not have been whom we rub elbows with; the heights of heaven would not have been what we call home. Today's feast is meant to pull into focus the reality that all three Persons of the Godhead now live within us, that we live within them, that in Jesus we are already higher than the angels. So the next time you're playing some football, or just watching a game, or even sooner, like later this afternoon, take a moment to remember John 3:16: God has rewritten our story so that we can share in his Divine Life.
Supremo, inimaginablemente superior a nosotros,
compuesto por una misteriosa relación entre tres
personas.
