<P _ WINTER HOURS: Monday through Friday 10 a. m. to nine p. m.;Saturday 9:30 a. m. to five p. m.; Closed Sundays and legal holidays

A small boy recently returnedhis books saymg "I have over-duedmy books". The clerk queried "Yc*uhave over-ducd them" "No" heanswered "I over did them".

Such a quantity of our books are"overdid" for one week that we

dire altering our" system of sendingreminder letters to the period offour weeks from the day the bookis borrowed. We find that the stafftime for this work has been cut-intwo, and the annoyed borrowerwiU not say "I know the books areovedue and will bring them backwhen we are through with them !

We have mentioned before theNew York State Law regarding the,

Retention of books. This has beeninvoked by one Long Island Libra-ry recently and Mr. Roth of EastOrange, N. J. gained worldwiderecognition when he prosecuted de-linquent borrowers. People shouldrealize that by holding library ma-terials they are depriving othersof needed books. Our library has6880 registered borrowers who takeout an average of 11113 books, pic-tures and phonograph records

monthly. Our book stock of 37731is adequate for ordinary use butthere .are not' sufficient copies ofpopular materials to allow forlengthy loan periods.

December is the slowest monthof the year for the publishing ofbooks as dealers hold importanttitles for the imprint of the coming'year. Fiction received during thefall months includes books by po-pular authors as well as some newto writing with some books of greatlength and size which may become"overdid". "Wilderness", RobertPenn Warren; "A Prologue toLove", Taylor Caldwell (600 pages);"The Land is Bright", Noel B. Ger-son; "The Way to the Lantern",Audery E. Lindop* "The Sea Ven-ture", F. Van Wyck Mason;"Charles the King"; Evelyn Anth-ony; "Chairman of the Bored", Ed-mond Streeter; "Haste to Succeed",Jason Striker; "The World TheyWanted", Herbert D. Kastle; and"God Must Be Sad", Fannie Hurst.

Merry Christmas to all—Christ-mas stories will be read at the Pic-ture Book Hour Fridays at 10:00to 10:30 a. m. . _ . .',
