QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Mark1:14-20
In today's Gospel reading, we hear the first words of
Jesus spoken in the Gospel of Mark. Why do you
think Jesus connects the kingdom of God with the
need for repentance?
Jonah 3:1-5, 10
The Ninevites took seriously the warning to repent
from the prophet Jonah. What motivates you to re-
pent from your sins?
1 Corinthians 7:29-31
In his First Letter to the Corinthians, we hear how
Paul is convinced that the return of Christ is immi-
nent; in fact, "time is running out." How do you
think Paul would react knowing Jesus has still not
returned?
“Nothing is so strong as
gentleness; nothing is so
gentle as real strength”
-St. Francis de Sales

3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
One of the Feasts on the church calendar that is celebrated during the Christmas season is the Baptism of the Lord. This feast usually falls on a Sunday but this year, it fell on a Monday. Some may wonder why Jesus needed baptism, being he
was without sin. Perhaps Jesus wanted to fully identify with humanity. After all, God became one
of us. Jesus is our foundation. I so love celebrating the sacrament of Baptism during the Mass. The celebration with the family is an opportune time for all present to renew their
own baptismal promises, for many, long ago. The reason I ask all to stand to profess their faith with
that particular family celebrating the sacrament for their child is to put ourselves in touch, at that moment, with the foundation upon which our lives
of faith are based. The Sacrament of Baptism is, then, the foundation upon which the church is built. Through our baptisms we have received Christ as our foundation and we continue to build
upon that foundation. For some of us, that founda-tion began with our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, families. Perhaps it was a neighbor or friend
who told us or more importantly, showed us what it means to be people of faith. For others, that
foundation was laid in schools and churches, by teachers, sisters, brothers, priests. Nevertheless, we all build on the foundation laid by others and we
honor them by continuing to build here at St. Pius however we can.
Like John the Baptist, our efforts of evangelization may not be the last word, but they can be an important contribution. John the Baptists said – “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” We have the privilege of seeing Christ, the Lamb of God, come to us when we
gather around the Eucharistic table where we are strengthened to continue to build the foundation. God bless
and stay warm!
