Do you have what it takes to work in Social Care?…If you enjoy working with people and like the idea of making a real difference to their lives, a career in adult social care could be for you.
A care and support role for you…Social care work involves providing help and support to people who need it. They may have an illness or disability, or be frail and need assistance with everyday tasks and other people may have a learning disability or experience mental health issues and need help to lead a more fulfilled life. There are many different roles in adult social care and if you have the necessary qualities, then one of them is likely to be for you.
Think about it…If you like forming positive relationships with others and gaining their trust; if you get a buzz when you make people smile or when you know that what you’ve done has helped them feel better, then we suggest that you seriously think about making the move to working in adult social care. It could be the best thing you ever do.
Don’t be put off… No matter what your age, your sex, your background, your previous jobs, past experience or qualifications - don’t let anything put you of considering a career within care. Having the right attitude and values is more important, although if you do have qualifications then that’s a bonus.
See if you have you got what it takes? If you answer yes to most of these questions then you should consider starting a career in social care and visit the CSAC stand on Friday 20 at Kendal College.
1) Are you a caring, kind and patient person with other people? 2) Are you self-aware and understand the impact of what you say and do? 3) Do you think you are dependable and reliable? 4) Can you work well under pressure and be strong when approached with a difficult situation? 5) Can you work to deadlines? 6) Can you follow instructions and carry out tasks? 7) Can you communicate well verbally e.g. chat to different people and put them at ease? 8) Can you communicate well in writing e.g. use a diary or fill in simple forms? 9) Do you think you are a good listener? 10) Can you empathise with people (understand how they feel)? 11) Are you a sociable person? Do you like people? 12) Could you encourage people to do what they can do without taking over? 13) Do you respect the values and beliefs of other people even if they are different to yours? 14) Do you respect other people’s privacy and dignity? 15) Are you happy to have training and to develop your own skills for your job/career?
Care Sector Alliance Cumbria will be attending the Jobs and Training event at Kendal College on Friday 20 June (see advert in this issue). Please come along to talk to us about working in the adult social care sector and the many opportunities available.
