What the heck is human-computer interaction

(HCI)?

“Human-computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the

design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them”

(ACM, 1996, p. 5).

Eh?

Basically…

it’s how

it’s how

we interact

it’s how

we interact

with computers

it’s how

we interact

with computers(you’re welcome)

What’s the point?

(purpose)

3. Um… lots of fun?

3. Um… lots of fun?

(there may be other reasons, idk)

What are some examples of HCI in use?

Well, this field is explosive…

… so by the time I tell you some cool ones…

… there will be something even cooler out there.

So I won’t even try…

“If you’re in a school that doesn’t have a lot of money – which is probably a lot of schools…”

“If you’re in a school that doesn’t have a lot of money – which is probably a lot of schools…”

HCI expert Johnny Lee discovered we can make our own interactive whiteboards for about $50. Pictured above: that is a normal, white markerboard that Johnny transformed into a MULTI-TOUCH interactive white board. He must’ve been a tad nervous… this image ends up being “Hell!” instead of “Hello!” Check out the full video on Ted.com (TED, 2008).

Told ya.

3D Drawing, Modeling

3D Drawing, Modeling

This is a screenshot of Rhonda, an open-source “3D drawing tool” (Pitaru, 2010a, para 1). The availability of 3D drawing tools may soon increase with the growing popularity of 3D movies and television. Rhonda has been around since 2003, but expect sophisticated 3D drawing tools and tablets to enter the classroom in the next 10 years (I’m willing to put my entire reputation behind that statement).

3D Drawing, Modeling

3D Drawing + Music = WOW

3D Drawing + Music = WOW

I took the screenshot above from the amazing demo video of Sonic Wire Sculptor, a new iPhone app which “turns your 3D drawing into sound [and] introduces a simple yet deep connection between visual and audio composition” (Pitaru, 2010b, para 2). This app’s educational value in a typical K-12 classroom may not be immediately apparent, but, then again, the arts – as a whole – are not as apparent, visible, or financed as they once were. This saddens me, especially considering the potentials of human-computer interaction leading to art forms we have yet to imagine.

I highly recommend clicking the link for this app and watching the demo video. Pretty cool stuff.

3D Drawing + Music = WOW

Ok, so maybe you’re asking yourself…

Well, human-computer interaction is everywhere.

If you’re watching this on

your

computer

If you’re watching this on

your

phone

If you’re watching this on

your

iPod

If you’re watching this on

your

iPad…

… then you’re the “H” in a little HCI this very

second.

Teen-agers are the “H” for a good portion of their

day.

Teen-agers are the “H” for a good portion of their

day.

(whether they know it or not)

And the “C’s”…

And the “C’s”…

(computers)

And the “C’s”…

(computers)

keep getting more powerful every week.

That just leaves the “I.”

And what better place to

learn…

And what better place to

learn…

when

And what better place to

learn…

where

And what better place to

learn…

how

And what better place to

learn…

how

to “interact”…

And what better place to

learn…

how

to “interact”…

than at school?

If nothing else…

… HCI offers a variety of

new ways to

… HCI offers a variety of

new ways to

show mastery

… HCI offers a variety of

new ways to

show understanding

… HCI offers a variety of

new ways to

express one’s creativity

… HCI offers a variety of

new ways to

interact.

And that’s all we’re doing here anyways, right?
