Economic growth occurs whenever people takeresources and rearrange them in ways that makethem more valuable. If economic growth could be achieved only bydoing more and more of the same kind ofcooking, we would eventually run out of rawmaterials and suffer from unacceptable levels ofpollution and nuisance. Human history teachesus, however, that economic growth springs frombetter recipes, not just from more cooking. Newrecipes generally produce fewer unpleasant sideeffects and generate more economic value perunit of raw material

Every generation has perceived the limits to growth that finite resources and undesirableside effects would pose if no new recipes or ideas were discovered. And every generationhas underestimated the potential for finding new recipes and ideas. We consistently fail tograsp how many ideas remain to be discovered. The difficulty is the same one we havewith compounding: possibilities do not merely add up; they multiply.
