Roy Lichtenstein Landscapes

American Pop Artist1923-1997

Roy first became successful with his

pop art paintings that used cartoon

images.

This is one of his many landscapes.

Landscapes were one of the first subjects that Lichtenstein painted after his comic-inspired breakthrough.

Here is a landscape from 100 years earlier; The Last of the Mohicans by Thomas Cole (1826)

How are they alike? How are they different?

Landscape art is the illustration of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests.

In landscape paintings, things that are further away are smaller, while things that are closer to us are larger.

In a landscape painting, things

will overlap.

Why are some trees larger and

in front of smaller trees?

Things that are close to us are brighter in color while things in the background become grayer and less clear.

These are the three main spaces you will see in a landscape; Foreground, Middleground and Background.

The horizon line separates the earth from the sky. Can you point out the horizon line?

Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition.

Roy found his ideas for landscapes not from nature itself, but from the backgrounds of cartoons.
